Yes he friendzoned himself. But also, she rejected his advances for 3 seasons, so of course he was afraid of messing up the beginnings of their, clearly undefined, relationship and made it worse.

Dude Haida sounds like a BIG scary person in Japanese while in English he sounds like a actual low class guy, he sounds like how a male hyena would actually sound because they are known to be low below the females

I actually shipped her with Tanado but the only reason she didn't stay with him is because he didn't want marriage. Also, I like Haida but he was freaking annoying in that season like I know he was going through shit but he also kept hiding his feelings for Retsuko and I'm just like 'omg just say you love her already' =w=

Interesting ride of development from S4. Sure, it's frustrating, but that doesn't make it bad.
It's actually very complex in how flawed and evolving the characters are.
That’s what makes the show great above all other romance bullshit, it’s so complex and takes forever. Very realistic. Not everyone is gonna fall in love at the same time and date a week later. Usually it’s common for girls to get very shy about asking guys out, but this time it’s a guy. And it’s super hard for him. I LOVE it.

Well he friendzoned himself and also lied that he had a friend waiting for him and you don't lie to the person you like very much cuz they will figure it out. Cuz lying is a no no and making it too much awkwardness will make it so uncomfortable.
Maaaaan, this season felt like it really had it out for Haida. Between him suddenly chickening out with Retsuko (which even made Fenneko go "Da fuq?"), him suddenly being down for fuggin corporate fraud, and then Retsuko completely fucking him over when he was trying to redeem himself it's fuggin disgraceful how they massacred my boy.

This was so painful to watch... and not precisely in a good way. I loved this show but the last season was just off
the only reason I would want a 5th season now is to see if they can redeem themselves. If they make a genuinely good 5th season, then I'm all for it. Seeing as they are slowly digging themselves in a hole, I'm pretty reluctant :(
@@spaghettisheepdog I hope that by next season they improve again too. I love this show and even in the 4th season some stuff was decent (specially the whole thing with Ton) but yeah... I think they runned out of good ideas or something.
I still have a little glimmer of hope, I wasn't expecting anything from the 3rd season and ended up being my favorite

So heres my spin on it: Haida been chasing this car for so long he doesnt know what to do when he catches it. It seems almost like there has been so much rejection here that he is hurt and not as stable in their (even platonic) relationship as he was before. He has fallen out of love, hasnt realized it, and is still trying to go through the motions of what he wanted because *its what he wanted* ... right? he wanted this...? This akward messed up thing were he keeps getting hurt and lies bc he wants some stable ground to stand on? Haida forgot what the relationship was in season 1 that attracted him so much to begin with. Its not the same. Both he and Retsko have changed, not all for the better. They might be able to salvage something... but of course it didnt work. They would both need to meet eachother were they are at now
I think what Haida needs to stand a chance at getting things right with Retsuko is a long break from her. Spend a long time away, like a year or two, and come back with a fresh set of eyes and a renewed outlook on who she is as a person and what he wants in a relationship. You're right that Haida's been chasing after Retsuko for so long now, and they've both changed a lot in that time frame, but he is still looking at her through the original rose colored glasses he put on when he first started liking her. I think he needs some distance to reset. Say he got sent on a business trip overseas for a while, and couldn't keep in touch with Retsuko easily because timezones. When he came back, there would be an instant comparison to make between how he remembers her to how she is when he returns, and the same will happen with Retsuko. Their relationship would be restructured based on how they both feel about the current Haida and Retsuko, rather than struggling with Haida's awkward crush and fear of screwing the relationship up mixing with Retsuko's general romantic indifference towards Haida and persisting only off of momentum and proximity.

So relatable. Not exactly sure why, but that pretty much sums up the dynamics between me and one female co-worker. It's not like there's anything between us and I am sure I did not send any wrong vibes. But she treats me like how Retsy treats Haida. I just play sociable, dumb, and naive whenever she's around to alleviate the awkwardness.

Agreed, he'd be better off getting with Fenneko, she's someone who doesn't mind Haida being himself and actively encourages him to be himself plus she's got his best interest at heart and it's obvious she has some sort of feelings for him based on SEason 3's bar scene where she drinks herself into saying that "The battle wasn't supposed to end like this."

Haida and Retsuko ain't good for eachother, they're too shy, keep sending mixed signals, and bad at communicating! They need someone the opposite of them to compliment them and they don't even help each other grow that much compared to how Tadano helped Retsuko (and even Haida) grow and Inui helped Haida grow.
