    I built one of Doug's engines and wound up racing him at the 1985? MARC National Meet in Chicago. I think he wound that engine out to over 65 MPH on the mandatory show tour. I thought for sure he would blow it up to my chagrin but it stayed together and he won the trophy.

    I met an older gentleman (sorry, I do not remember his name, about 1973) who lived in Shelby, Ohio..While doing reappraisal work for Richland County tax dept., I came to his house and low and behold in his back lot were two 40'x80' steel barns tightly, I mean tightly packed with stored Model A's. He had every style that was ever made ...some doubles. Knowing that I owned a Model A air gauge, that used to be my grandpa's, I took it and gave it to him as a thank you gift for allowing me to see his collection in both barns. I will never forget it, and always wondered who was the lucky one to have bought the collection.

      You are right Steve, he truly was a gentleman. His name was Vernon E. Burks. I too had the good fortune of viewing his collection twice. Once in the 80’s with my father, (who had a great time going down memory lane), and later, on a return trip to Ohio with my wife, again we saw Mr, Burks and his amazing collection. On that visit, a couple came by in their Model A to pick up Vernon for their A meeting. He advised us we were welcome to spend as much time as we wanted, but to please turn out the lights, and close the door when we were done. What an amazing man, and what an amazing collection. I too do not know what happened to the collection after his passing on March 10, 2014.

    I've got a '29 Fordor Briggs that sat in a barn since the 40s; after a starter, carb, sediment bowl, shutoff valve, distributor, coil, battery cables and some motorycycle tubes it's now driveable again. The original owners had painted it blue with a paintbrush and there's a bullet hole in the right rear door. No exhaust (it fell off right after I got it running again), no roof material, no driver door glass...and all kinds of cool.

      Lurking under that rare hood is a Falcon 260V-8 and Ford 4-speed hooked to the original closed torque tube drive train. Even the front suspension, etc are original. It does have updated F-1 steering and 46-48 hydraulic brakes.
      Recently drove 16 miles to pick granddaghter up from last days of school.
      After that 32 mile trip at 55-60+MPH I mentioned to my son who was driving, we shoulda videoed our ride. I got another 40+ miles of country road cruising and a stop at the old A&W on son's Smart phone.
      The 50+ year old engine ran cool at 89 degrees outside and mostly 55+ MPH. Better than many used daily drivers I've bought.

It was bone stock except the paint which was red with black fenders and black interior. He drove it some but had alot of projects and it ended up in the basement the next year. He died and my stepmom wont sell it so it is still sitting in that dark but dry and heated basement. Maybe someday it will escape and return to Sonic and car shows. Good vid!

    It may be a sin but I'm considering putting a small diesel engine in a 1930 Tudor sedan. A little 4 cylinder diesel would be reliable and fuel mileage would be fantastic. I want to drive and travel in my car, not look at it in a museum. I'm still studying on how to make it work. But a 40mpg 5 speed daily driver sounds great to me 😎🤘. A 3 cylinder diesel may work too. A 60hp diesel from a Ford farm tractor is about the right physical size to fit in an A. Right now still studying the matter

    Great video, thank you. I really like the unrestored A's also. I have an unrestored late 1930 Closed Cab Pickup. This is my (nearly) daily driver. I see you're cruising at about 50 MPH in your Tudor, which is wishful thinking for my pickup since it's still running the original 4.11:1 rear axle gears. In your opinion, what is a good rear axle ratio for comfortably cruising the flat-lands in a pickup around 50 MPH? I have a 5.5 CR Snyders head and a Zenith Model B carburetor on it now and the engine is 'perky'. Thanks again.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of people down in the valley (all flat land) run 3.54 gears in pickups and cruise at 55 MPH all day long. In the hills, the stock 3.78 gears are better. With 4.11 gears, you could install a Mitchell overdrive with the 33% O/D ratio and cruise 55 MPH all day and still have the low end grunt the 4.11 gears give you.

    What's the difference between a Model A and a Model T?

    • @ellieprice3396
      @ellieprice3396 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some simple answers. The Model T preceded the Model A. The A had a sliding gear transmission and the T had a planetary transmission. The A was more advanced mechanically, so you might say it was an improved Model T.

      i think the Model T was manufactered in the 1917's or so where the model A came after around 1930

      Model A is a reasonably modern car driveable on most roads. Not meant for extended highway driving.

      Doug is nit-picking his own car. He is a perfectionist. Without people like him, we would soon forget what they really looked like from the factory. He doesn't nitpick your car, don't worry. He has very high standards for his own cars, and when one didn't quite meet the mark, he pointed that out. You have to admit, that's pretty cool.

    • @Thomas63r2

      My 1931 phaeton has chromed top irons and uncovered stained wood bows. I bought it that way and love it.
      My Model T came with black painted wood wheels, cad plated outer split rims, and black wall tires. I stained the wood wheels, painted the split rims bright red, and added wide whites. Just those things stood out on tours and parades.
