    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Kestrel chicks need help
When Mrs Kes disappeared, her six kestrel chicks could not survive without her. The youngest three were particularly weak so I took them in to my care. But I decided to leave the older three in the nest, where their kestrel dad Mr Kes was learning to take on the role of full time carer.
    Kestrel male needs support
But despite working extra hard to hunt, brood and feed his chicks, Mr Kes wasn't getting enough food to his chicks. So I helped out and took extra food to the kestrel chicks in the nest and soon they began to grow, learning to walk on shaky legs and flapping their wings for the first time.
    Rescued chicks
Meanwhile, I fed the younger three chicks six times a day and kept them warm indoors until they were ready to go back into the kestrel nest with their siblings.
    Back in the nest
I gave the chicks one last feed before returning them one by one to the kestrel nest. The chicks squawked noisily as I placed them back in, a good sign that they are strong again! But their siblings seemed scared and it is a while before all six kestrel chicks settle down.
    Reunited with kestrel dad
Then its time for the most important reunion. Kestrel dad Mr Kes arrives with a mouse for his hungry brood. He's so focussed on the job of sharing out the meal he doesnt seem to noticed the second half of his brood is back!
    Next time
In my next film I'll be showing you how all six kestrel chicks go on to thrive and begin to take an interest in the world beyond the nest. Subscribe to my channel to get early notifications of its release.

It's rare that this specie actually have sexual differences. Normally same behavior makes the genders to be the same, and it will be better if both of them do the 2 roles, like other species of bird of pray. At the end everything is random and evolution don't look for perfection but "just works". Nature isn't perfect. Mr. Kes it's amazing

Rob, it was heart wrenching to loose Mrs Kes 😢just after her six chicks had hatched 🐣. Mr Kes with your help honoured her by raising her babies to fledging, what super dad he is. Such a happy ending to a sad beginning. I still laugh every time I watch Mr Kes calling for a new mate & all the babies zoom in, “ok dad we’re here, what’s up?” The surprised look on his face was hilarious I felt he was saying “oh come on, you’re cramping my style, I’m an empty nester now, so go away & live your life”. ❤ 🥰🇦🇺

No. Robert is NOT trying to be a father, he doesn’t want that bond as they are better raised in the wild. He is more of a short term ‘feeder’ as even he said he wants as little to do with them as possible to avoid that. Stop putting your own sh!t prejudices and jumping on anything to make yourself feel morally superior. Jerks. Watch out, your own ‘tolerance’ is showing.

Astounding that Mr. Kes was able to rise above his instincts and realize that without Mrs. Kes around to tear up and feed his chicks the prey he brought in they would not be able to eat and die, and actually learned to take on the job he had seen his mate do! I don't know how common or rare that kind of learning is in birds outside of the Corvids, but I bet it's previously near-unknown among kestrels and other birds of prey with defined roles!

God the older chicks' faces when the younger ones returned. "What the hell, we thought you were dead" "Nah some weird featherless giant just decided to babysit for a few days"

Whoever Mr. Kes ends up with, she has a heck of a partner in him.
Wonder if he remembers how to feed the chicks if he ever needs to.

It never ceases to fill me with wonder in how Wildlife & Nature are so exquisitely embracing of additions into the nest, such as so perfectly demonstrated here, with our glorious Mr. Kes.
He doesn't bat an eyelid - He just gets on with the job in hand - And he is magnificent in his work.
I believe the world can learn so much from wildlife & nature. Mr. Kes epitomises an ideal in his super noble acts; He is a gentleman bird, who I find so ecstatically inspiring. How I love him. 🥲

At first I thought the chicks were more freaked out by the hand going in and out of the nest, then I saw the one watching the other chicks and leaning back with it's foot up and beak open 😂

I really enjoy your blog, your a Saint. I'm really impressed by how the male Kestrel has stepped up to the plate taking care of his chick's. He's amazing how he has taken on both roles of mother and father. With your help the fate of the populations of Owls, Kestrel and now Kingfishers are in good hands.
    Thanks a Million
Mark p.s. The valley in which you reside is stunning, it's so beautiful...
