  • In this video I will upgrade two 3dfx Voodoo2 8MB cards to 12MB.
I take no responsibility if you try anything I do.

Sorry I had to re-upload it but HD versions should work now.

Is it possible upgrade for example to 24MB or any higher capacity than 12MB?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@spirocz 4MB per FBI, 16MB per TMU according to 3dfx data sheet and a max of two FBI's in SLI for a total off 104MB.
You just need to figure out how to do that tough.

This is kind of modification I am interested in. I do have 125mhz edo rams brand new! I know where to get a lot more of them. Could you help with voodoo2 sli memory mod? How can I get in touch with you?

    Neat.

They have had plenty of models of cards over the years with different ram sizes on the same PCB/die wish more people did this more later cards would probably need different bios or custom bios to work though great vid btw

It is possible to replace the RAM chips with higher capacity ones? leading to something like a 16mb voodoo2 or more? Do you have to modify the card's bios at all to make it recognize the new memory? I also noticed you have used 100mhz chips. I've seen pictures of voodoo2s with up to 125mhz chips. Can you find faster chips? Do you know if it helps overclocking? My voodoos2 with 100mhz RAM don't really overclock past 97mhz without some artifacting pixels, even though I epoxied aluminum heatsinks to the main 3 chips.

There are Voodoo2 cards with 1MByte chips but it uses 12 of them instead of 24 and as fare as I know has no pads on the back for more so still just 12Mb card.
Voodoo2 chipset supports 4Mb frame buffer and 2,4,8 and 16Mbyte of texture ram according to the data sheet. If that is per TMU bases or in total Im not sure but in theory a 20MB Voodoo2 is doable but no one has done it as fare as I know.
To do it you would have to find the RAS lines for the extra texture ram chips on the TMU and then piggyback the texture ram and hook up the separate RAS line to what should be pin 14 I would guess on the RAM chips.
But this is a qualified guess, thats how it works on the Voodoo1.
If someone figures it out a custom PCB would be the best way for a clean look.
The card has no bios, and no it will autodetect the chips when added to the back so there is nothing required but adding the extra 4MByte of Texture ram.
There are Voodoo2 cards with 110Mhz and 125Mhz ram, I have one with 110Mhz that I can get up to 105Mhz with some cooling at times so yes it helps with overclocking.
Faster then 100Mhz today is probably hard to find, most people with broken 110 or 125Mhz versions that need ram replacing seems to go for the 100Mhz ram.
The cards will run at 90Mhz because the drivers tells the card what clocks to run.
Fastvoodoo drivers will tell any Voodoo2 to run at 93Mhz, those drivers are crap tough and not really faster at the same clock.

nice work are you going to show it in sli?

Those cards are not matched so would require the patched drivers.
I did two more cards that are in SLI in my Athlon 850@956Mhz system.
But I dont have a plan for an SLI Voodoo2 video, seems to be plenty of those around.

What hot air temperature were you using?

    •  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I tend to use 450C for most things. But temperature is only one factor, airflow and distance to the object maters also.
