Fencing the Lambing Paddock With My Homemade Post Knocker

- We needed a nice sheltered paddock fenced ready for lambing in the spring. We are going to lamb in the field but then bring them under the solar panels for a week or so to keep them safe until they are strong. This is the last of our land we need to fence so I am glad to have it done.
Looks like you guys will survive this economic downturn.... This is how our world was built, self reliance.... Great work..
Hmmm, partly! It takes a village and all that...
@@sroberts605 It takes a metropole today.
Edit, just to make sure: I agree with you but most people today live in cities.
That what they said to the farmers in Holland and then they God invaded by Germany and the city folk couldn't get food so they started to go out the the rural areas and digging up potatoes and such in the fields. Can't harm every one that comes. I say harm but you know what I mean. Started killing all the wild life around for meat.
@@noeraldinkabam I was just musing that we are all intertwined and rely on each other to greater or lesser extents.
@@leestimis9264 With 7 billion of us on the planet we are definitely playing with fire. The Dutch were living on 580 calories per day before they really started looking for any alternative. But these are grim thoughts, it'll all be fine, lol
It's great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan's th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.
As I'm first I can take the opportunity, to say how much I've enjoyed watching your planning and execution come together so well.
The skills we have watched you learn, should be an inspiration to us all, to take on a challenge more often.
Thank you, :)
There seems no end to this bloke’s skills and ingenuity. An example and inspiration to anyone.
Kris, you are a blessed man.
You are both inspiring well done on living your healthy lifestyle. No validation required 👍🏾
Man, that post knocker was well worth the time you took to design and build it. What a useful tool.
I am always amazed how most people make or get very usefull equipement (for the tractor) and after using it to their full content end up leaving said equipement out in the weather (or at best poorly covered by a UV eaten tarp). The Dr. Harbour way would be to have a lean to shed somewhere to store those (obviously) vital tooling out of (most of) the weather...
She's so strong and beautiful. You are one lucky guy. Actually you both are. Total luck finding each other is not the sum of two individual lucks, rather the product of them. Wish you both the best that life has to offer.
You are lucky man to have the lovely Dot working with you. You guys are doing a fantastic job of building your dream homestead.
Yeah, I agree, Dot has put in a lot of work.
you guys are awesome! i love the way Dot is always there to get her hands dirty with you! Hopefully your neck heals up quickly Kris. you two are a great pair! keep up the good work!
I like how the ducks come and inspect you work. I hope they approved.
Though I wouldn't want to call a goose a duck to her face...
Impressed with how well Dot handled that hand held post driver. No small feat because they're not light and she did a better job than I ever did when I've used them, lol.
Quite right, fough she's lucky that she didn't have to use a sleage
Never first
Always here.
✌️
That's gotta feel good fencing off the last lot! That post knocker is worth her weight in gold, and the one on the back of the tractor isn't bad either! :D
I remember when you first came down the track onto what was then wild and neglected land. You have built not only a beautifully sustainable farm; but also built a means of making a living with low impact sustainable energy! You are in fine shape to weather the storms to come. Thank you for sharing this journey!
I always learn something of value from your videos Kris. The technical instruction for releasing a post knocker is "donk" 😊
this is for the beautiful hard working lady, 🌹🌹💖💖🌺🌺🌷🌷🎃🎃. and yes kris did good to. great video.
Fencing is fun😁. When I worked on the farm as a youngster, we dug the holes by hand with the post hole digger (PhD😉). For cattle we would use 4 strands of barbed wire, for sheep we'd use 5. For the corner and gate posts we ran the brace post horizontally about 2/3 of the way up the vertical posts from the ground (spiked between the two vertical posts). Then we ran a loop of #10 fencing wire from the bottom of the corner post (we stapled the wire to the posts) to where the horizontal post intersected the brace post. We'd take a small stick and run it inside the wire loop about midway between the vertical posts and use it to twist the wire loop to tighten the wire to counteract the force from the fence wires and keep the posts vertical. The stick was long enough so it could be restrained by the horizontal post. We used a "fence stretcher" to put each barbed wire strand under 100 pounds or so of tension and then make final adjustments with the "twisting stick". If necessary as time passed, a turn or two could be taken with the stick to keep the posts vertical. Our soil was sandy and with your approach the brace post would move from the force applied by the fence (and freeze/thaw) and the corner post would lean. Just found your site in the last 10 days and I am enjoying watching your progress and thinking process. Best wishes.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you.... but Dot is a real keeper. You're a lucky guy.
I periodically go back and re-watch the early videos just to have a sense of how far they have come. Amazing.
Those geese just follow you around all day! I love it
Dut, You are gem, I don't know what he would do without you.
How lucky you are to have a Lady with the character and personality of Dott's to work with.
Yeah, well, kinda works both ways, in their case.
Total "power couple"! 😄
I have watched you from your tent days. I have to say you impress me with every video. Your sense of humor always gets me to laugh. Has anyone ever told you that you are an excellent role model? If not, I just did!
Ever so productive...
My partner and I were discussing prepping (topical topic atm), and he said, Well, Kris and Dot will be ok. And we both laughed a pained laugh.
Loved the audience watching you closely!
I think the post hole knocker is my favorite project that you've built. So specific and so useful.
Great to see you again away having open heart surgery. As always awesome videos. Great work Dot & Kris 👍🏆🏆🏆
Your young lady is a gem sir, not afraid of hard graft and using and old fashioned post knocker 👍awesome vid as always , keep them coming
Liking how the geese hang with you and Dot.
Best wishes for you. Love your videos.
Yeah I noticed that too. The geese seemed really comfortable being so close to the work and noise going on. Shows they trust Kris and Dot.
They're not hanging out they're supervising.
@@charleshill9236 Birds crave "action" and are very very curious. Maybe the "food providers" brought some morsels too!
@@viriato8566 Actually NO. There is a bunch of "historic farm series" where a historian and two archaeologists live on a farm "like a few hundred years ago" ... and in one of them they build some new fencing and they get "the most notorious jailbreakers - the geese - to test it".
So they arent "supervising", they are "checking how it is being constructed" ... to have an easier way to get out later.
Hey Kris, use a ring spanner to twist off your fence ends.
Run the wire round the post and wrap it back over itself. Then slide the ring spanner over the wire end and use the spanners leverage to wind it round and round the strand in a spiral. cut to length and onto the next
SO awesome you can tackle all these smaller jobs around your place now that you are not entrenched in a massive undertaking like building a workshop. Proud of you Kris.
Always a pleasure watching. Thank you.
I love the way the the geese all just hang around with you guys while you're working with all that equipment your girlfriend did a good job
I feel I need to give a big respect shout out to Dot..she is a trooper and deserves a shout out..love following your journey so so much..keep up the great work
Great Job as always Kris... You and Dot make a great team...
👌💯
I wish you two a healthy, happy, prosperous life.
Great to see Dot is an outdoors girl.
Your videos are such an inspiration to my wife and I Kris. We look forward to each new video and seeing the great progress you and Dot are making with the homestead and business. Your skills and accomplishments are amazing. God bless you two!
Excelente trabajo..campeón..! Y con tu compañera..! Éxito total..! Hermoso como esta quedando todo..! Me encanta..! Gracias por compartir..! Gran abrazo.:!
Awesome well done
Kris, you're a lucky man, having Dot around. Priceless! great vid.
Dot was incredible! Way to go! It's so great seeing you two working together as a team 🙂
Love the geese appearing in the background to see what’s going on.
Another great job and video ❤❤❤❤
Hi sir enjoy wachting your work nice for the lamb its hard work you know but you two did it she was tired boncking iam so sorry for her i think she enjoying doing of helping you have a nice day
Great to see you two! The fence looks beautiful. Hope your neck goes back in order soon Kris.
Looks good! You and Dot make a good team!👏
I’m working so that I can one day buy land similar to this and make something similar to what you and Dot have. Your videos inspire me to keep working hard. What an awesome channel! Much love, from Australia ♥️
That brings back memories of spinning jennys, wire strainers, gumboots, freezing rain and hot cups of tea. Good times with good people.
An incredibly valuable addition to your farmstead infrastructure. Great teamwork!
You and Dot are an excellent team you seem to work well together ❤️🇨🇦
Just got home from work on Friday afternoon and new upload. Great way to start the weekend
I love how practical you are with short, mid and long term solutions
nice work mates i used to make that sort of fence back in the early 1980’s. My old boss was straining barbed wire between posts and it gave way and wrapped him up like a beat parcel
I have loved watching you grow and change as a person since you started on your land with the roundhouse. I have recently moved to South Wales and would love to come and help if you ever need it
Good job you too! Thanks for the video! Dot is so quiet, she's lovely!🌹👸
I love it that your videos are getting more and more Dotty.
Forget stress relief techniques. Watching one of these videos is far more effective. Incredibly interesting to townies like me, All the very best to both of you.
I think the geese are just busy bodies lol The sheep look content & the fence looks fantastic 😊🇦🇺
Dear Dot and Kris.
👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). Here are two 💚💚 for two hard workers. This fencing was a lot of effort for sure. Everything looks great and obviously is very sturdy. Congrats! I very much like to see a couple being able to work well together. Congrats again! Get well soon, Kris (shoulder/neck).
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
Dot is awesome.
Dot looks at her happiest when she’s donking.
😳
Always a joy to watch your videos Kris.
Great job
I'm exhausted. Great job.
Nice to see Dot - she has a great smile - awesome work guys
Dot's amazing! What a gem!
Love watching, wish the rest of the world could see what I see. Hope for the future thanks Chris you really are an inspiration today.
Since Dot did all the work, I hope you cooked dinner for her. 😊
Good one Kris!
Glad to see that you are using that type of fencing Kris just remember that lambs can and do get through it. Being an ex agricultural engineer I've seen them escape from a field surrounded by rock walls they've literally climbed over the wall.
Watching Dot with that fence poster it does remind me that ladies can have bigger muscles than some men, I'd watch myself around her if I was you.
I like Dot. She's calm. And jeez, she's strong! Really nice video. Just about covers all you need to know about fencing for sheep! I have a 1 acre garden surrounded by a sheep grazing pasture, so much of interest.
Nice to see a new video. You made a comment about it looking like Dot was doing all the work...we knew she was and you were just rolling in the dirt to make it look like you were doing it all. lolol (THAT WAS A JOKE!!) It's nice to see Dot again but she needs to step up to the camera once in a while and say hi so we can see her pretty face. She is a real worker! Without her you'd be way behind in your chores. Stay safe, well and warm.
Does Dot have a channel? Maybe something about her harp etc?
Kris I have been a viewer for a short time. I have binged watched a lot of your vids.
Keep them coming they are good stuff.
I think at by now nearing half a million subs, he pretty much got the message 😅
Amazed you can do all this without planning permission.
Had some nice weather over the last few days. Nice to get that sorted before it turns. Get that neck sorted! Great job as usual.
Hard work being a farmer !
Lov how the geese stick right by ya.
Good to see someone put fence stays at right height Kris. Pretty similar to fencing here in NZ 🇳🇿 Keep up the good work team!
Clicked on this by mistake - as soon as I saw the solar panels, and checked the date: knew it wasn't right, because I'm still in mid 2020 (there's a bit of workshop roof to turf, and the panels are back by the spring-fed greenhouse, which is coming on really well. Oh, and Dot has yet to receive the Love Harp!). All absolutely inspiring, Kris - I do hope you take time to remember what you're continuing to achieve...
We have a shaver post driver and it works similar to yours. The fulcrum lift arm on yours makes it much faster than the Shaver. Only difference is the Shaver has springs on it to keep the driver weight from bouncing so it helps drive the post. Nice job on that driver.
Your girl friend are amazing. Drove all the way and spend the weekend hard labor with you. God bless.
Its been a while since that mighty wee cordless chainsaw has made an appearance. Great work boss
Another great video Kris & Dot. She truly is your right hand Kris. Looking forward to the next video, take care.
I always thought Dot was Kris’ right hand, haha😊
Kris, Awesome Job! Dot is a Beast!
You better Marry that Lady.
I always look forward to your videos and , as usual, greatly enjoyed this one. Really liked the “thunk ”. Perfect.
Love how the geese were just hanging out with you
I did enjoy the video! Very satisfying to see your critters tucked in all cozy 😊
I've built fences like this before, can't say I enjoyed it but I can appreciate your handiwork, looked better than my attempts
Fence looks awesome Kris. 👍💚
Chris and Dot excellent work excellent team ,keep it up love the channel 😁👏
Great work Kris. Great admiration for what you have created on your journey. 👏👍💪
Great job Kris, geese enjoyed it too. Well done.
I have found if you put the staples vertically they will pop out. The change in moisture and sunshine makes the staples ease out as they are within the grain of the wood. I have found if they are at 45 degrees they spread out and do not seem to ease out at all. So when you notice this in about 2/3 years, pull them out ( do not bang them back in) and retail at 45 degrees
Thanks for posting and sharing. Glad that you were able to get the fencing done together.
Enjoyable and informative video, and Dot, you are a superstar!
You both did a real good job on the fencing. Just can't get over you making your on post pounder. Works so well and takes a lot off your arms and back. Those sheep are looking good also and the geese. I enjoy your videos, your so informative about what you are doing and why. Your property is looking so nice too.
Good Morning
The fencing is looking good 👍
Thanks for the video. Just a thought, you could always use some of the wire to make a strap round the post to the fencing (top, middle & bottom) on the short section that is on the wrong side, this will stop the sheep being able to push out the staples.
