@@aaronberns8485 to a degree, yes! The only difference is that the comfortable playing range on horn is relatively an octave above what most other brass instruments have, allowing it to hit both those low and higher notes :DD widest range of any brass instrument!
I am the worst in my band. My band has constantly changed directors every year to the point that we have four kids in our high school band. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen to help me in my predicament.
I've been playing for a few years. It's worth it. You'll realize just how hard it is in a month. Keep at it! There is a reason why French Horn is considered the god instrument. What his is doing is very important. I'm taking time to address and improve. My range is pretty wide. Be detailed with how spend your time with your horn. Good luck!
BassShiftTheoryKoi I suck at it and I practice every day scale songs and I just still sound the same I didn't even make honor band as 7th grader and the other people did I feel like that means I have no hope like it's you make it your good you don't your gonna suck forever I feel lost
Hey Waffle 101, I felt that I wasn't improving for years, I hated practicing and was embarrassed when made to play. I didn't expect that to change, but it finally did, and I finally feel proud of the way I play. I enjoy playing now! Keep at it and don't give up- you will make it!
I only really need to work on my high notes. I can play the b flat below the bass cleff(is that known as pedal b flat?) but I can only play up to the A above the treble cleff.
I can play down to pedal G and up to High C, but I still need practice to 1. Maintain my range, and 2. To maybe someday get better-ish. And by Pedal G I mean not the one right on the top space in Bass Clef.
I've been playing horn for almost 2 years now and the highest note I can play is the G just above the staff. idk if that's an ocomplishmen or if I should be able to play higher keep in mind I'm 12 so yeah
Really impressive I think this’ll help me. I’ll go see if you’ve got a tone video because my tone is just horrible I don’t have anyone else in my section to ever listen to and am hopping between tenor sax alto sax clarinet trombone It’s very.... oof edit: seems you don’t I’ll be working on my tone the way I do it then
It helps to specialize on french horn and not change to other instruments. Trumpet players sometimes try to play horn and although they can get a great high range, their tone is often brittle or bright. To improve your tone, consider playing long tones to relax and strengthen your embouchure. Listen to professional recordings of horn players to absorb the sound into your mind and mentally copy it. Read the Farkas book, The Art of French Horn Playing, for a chapter on it.
What a great video, dude👍 I have zero musical talent but I really enjoyed hearing your fluttering French horn stylings! I’d love to hear you play some James Horner Star Trek 2 : The Wrath of Khan soundtrack stuff. Especially in the songs, “Genesis Countdown” & “End Titles” James Horner really lays the fluttering French horns on extra thick 🎺👍😀
A shallow cup mouthpiece is pretty much something reserved for use in the extreme high register, and in most cases would inhibit any flexibility needed to jump around in the registers, especially into the low range! HOWEVER, there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rule!!! everybody is different: different lips, embouchure, way of blowing & using pressure (some positive, some negative!) so it is possible that a shallow cup might work for some individuals in all ranges!🤷🏻♂️
hi im a french horn player in Philippines I would like to inquire what would be the best learning book for the intermediate level. I would like to have your suggestions if you may...I would love to have your suggestions.. thanks a lot
If you still are checking this the "Marvin Howe Method for Horn" and Marvin Howe's "Advancing Hornist Volume 1" are great ones to help work on the fundamentals that are achievable by intermediate level players, but can always be further improved by professionals.
One more suggestion in addition to the Koppraches: Maxime-Alfonse books 1-3. Book 4 is too advanced in their exercises. Maxime-Alfonse is French, though, and they are more expensive to purchase.
I play the French horn in my wind instruments club, and I have a contest for middle schoolers in two weeks, we really want to win, but we only have 6 people. I am the only French horn player, and I play a lot of the melody. I can't play high sounds beautifully. Whenever I play, the sound starts to break.
AW I know that feeling! Have you gotten better? I hate making mistakes especially when it comes to performances lol but really, dont be too hard on yourself. The key to higher notes is blowing faster air through a smaller opening (aperture) . Just dont pull your lips apart or spread them when trying to play higher notes because trust me, it sounds thin and bad! *DONT SQUEEZE YOUR LIPS TOGETHER EITHER!*
HoneyBunchSugarPlum Hi! Thank you for your comment! I’ve been trying for the past week and have been having a hard time playing hard notes right at the moment I want it to because sometimes I can play high notes and sometimes I can’t. I read your comment and now I can magically play high notes better! Thank you so much
Very nice demonstration Mr Lloyd. (Disclaimer: I don’t play any brass instruments, but the horn has long fascinated me.) There were several instances when you were demonstrating the exercises where you played concert G2, 1 1/2 octaves above middle C (I forget the pitch assignment on the horn). Is that pitch supposed to be the physical limit of the horn’s upper range? In a respective context, the Broadway cast recording of Tommy from 1993, there is one movement featuring a solo in the range of a piccolo trumpet, and the only brass instruments in the orchestra are French horns. Is the horn physically capable of being played in the piccolo trumpet range? Edit: Additionally, is it really “singing” or just humming?
Dear Sir, I am curious as to performing tremelo on the horn. What are the practical limits in terms of intervals ? What part does register play? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi,I sucribed to your channel and very much appreciate your videos but I was wondering if you could do video on double tonging and just getting the embouchure THANKS!!!
There are some exercises in the Farkas book and another text (by another author) to practice the low range. In addition to opening up your embouchure slightly by dropping your jaw, you might try pushing your jaw forward -- slightly.
I'm amazed at the range of the french horn. It can sound like a tuba, or a trumpet! One of the hardest instruments to play well...
I play euphonium, and I think the range is also amazing. The euphonium is really a French horn if it was shaped like a tuba.

Im so bad at high notes with the french horn this guy is awesome
Hit That Rhythm! #relatable 😭
Me too have you seen ryan palmer his is amazing atleast to me
Meeee rn I swear it's Soo hard for me to hit High F in the B flat scale (lmao)
High notes on horn are easy compared to trumpet....
@@maples5875 bruh i forgot i even commented this. I agree though because now three years later I can actually hit them on the horn.

Richard Hausman thanks for inspiration my tone is bad and I crack notes a lot
That used to be me, practice is the only remedy! If you can be focused every second of practice and do it for one hour every day, you will be set.
Man he makes it look easy. I wanna be as good as him one day
Great video. I think it’s a good point to work on BOTH high and low and not become complacent in one.
I only really need to work on my high notes. I can play the b flat below the bass cleff(is that known as pedal b flat?) but I can only play up to the A above the treble cleff.
ThatGuy 24000 damn bro,I can play the f below the staff and I can almost get that g one above the staff
ThatGuy 24000 it’s not that you can play the note, it’s trying to improve the note to where it sounds dark and rich
Budder Bro's I can get to my b flat above the staff on good days
I can play down to pedal G and up to High C, but I still need practice to 1. Maintain my range, and 2. To maybe someday get better-ish. And by Pedal G I mean not the one right on the top space in Bass Clef.
So you need to still practice both ranges.

Its a triple horn
Bb Double Horn
Thanks for tips and music, great skills (y)
pro-tip; don't go from playing french horn to trumpet and then back to french horn it really messes with your embouchure.
Natas Gabel it’s better to use a mellophone mouthpiece instead of a trumpet mouthpiece if you do play trumpet.
If you use a French horn mouthpiece with an adapter it doesn’t mess it up as bad
I have to march trumpet this year, and play horn in concert season. It stinks :/, it mainly just messes with my pitch though
I play trumpet in jazz band and French horn in concert band doesn’t mess with my embouchure at all
I can't hit low notes 😩 not very well atleast...
