I was very lucky to have seen New Grass Revival several times from their beginning to their very end. They just kept getting better every show. The shows right before they opened for The Grateful Dead were at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. Filled with longtime fans like me, they blew the roof off the joint; nobody wanted them to stop. It was very emotional. That was the show to see.
Gotta agree with ya, Vickie. Putting powerhouse, all-star musicians together does not always result in great music...however in this case, it does. The countenances tell it all; there's so much joy and excitement emanating from their faces as they play.
I was lucky enough to watch these guys from the start, emerging from the Bluegrass Alliance to NGR. When Cowan came they had the vocals to carry the day and they pushed all musicians to kep up with their statement of talent. my son reaped the rewards too as he was exposed at an early age 5 years old. Thanks for posting.
I too watched them from the start, back to bluegrass festivals in Winfield, KS dragging my 5 year old son along. He's loved bluegrass ever since! And now, has his own music software company.
You couldn't pay me to stay I'm stealin' away On a wild western ride Yah give 'em all my best I'm off for the southwest where it's sunny and dry Cause over my shoulder I see the sorrow Up ahead I see only tomorrow it's a beautiful view Oh, I'm lookin' past you
i grew up in the sticks and hated bluegrass. Until I heard these guys! Man, the vocal arrangement's and musicianship were unbelievable. Nothing like the poor singing and barely in tune pickers and howlers of the day. This WAS new grass and I loved it. They raised the bar and bluegrass was the better for it. It's too bad they never received the credit they deserved.
I'm looking past you Looking past you With my eyes open wide I'm walking with pride I've got a free man locked up inside I'm gonna pull him through I'm lookin' past you You were the riddle out in the middle Stallin for a time I've got no more to lose I'm all out of clues and the next one is mine It was a little hard to swallow And you might be a tough act to follow So what else is new I'm lookin' past you
Thanks for bringing these back. Anyone know what happened to the postings of a concert in Prauge featuring Sam, John, Nick of Hot Rize, and Laurie Lewis?
@lewisrs1 they would have probably gotten more recognition with the purest had John Cowan used an upright bass. And remember...they were dope smoking hippie pickers. I don't have a problem with any of that, but many people do.
Incredible. What to say? No words to describe these guys.
J. This is awesome

Bluegrass at its best right here!!
Excellent!!! NGR was THE first bluegrass band I ever saw performing live. Blew me away and I've been involved in bluegrass ever since.
You couldn't pay me to stay
I'm stealin' away
On a wild western ride
Yah give 'em all my best
I'm off for the southwest
where it's sunny and dry
Cause over my shoulder
I see the sorrow
Up ahead I see only tomorrow
it's a beautiful view
Oh, I'm lookin' past you
Thanks so much for this one!! I used to play this song over and over on my cassette.

My Favorite NGR Song of all time!

Boy these guys were so young back then wonder when this was done what year?
I'm looking past you
Looking past you
With my eyes open wide
I'm walking with pride
I've got a free man locked up inside
I'm gonna pull him through
I'm lookin' past you
You were the riddle
out in the middle
Stallin for a time
I've got no more to lose
I'm all out of clues
and the next one is mine
It was a little hard to swallow
And you might be a tough act to follow
So what else is new
I'm lookin' past you
Yup. Pure Papa.
My all time favorite!! Glad the 80s are over, though, geez, shoulder pads.
Oh Hell Yes!
Fuck I wonder what it's like to know how fucking good you sound. Like "guys we're fucking great".
Thanks for bringing these back.
