- Pokemon Competitive Singles in Generation 3 has a long history. And throughout the years, Weezing has shown itself to be quite a consistent choice in Competitive.
While this Pokemon is not at the absolute Centre of the metagame, and is not ranked in OU, Weezing is a favourite among top players for its versatile options and unique defensive properties.

There is also Baxcalibur, which uses Will-o-Wisps to power itself up and does not exist in a world with Scald. Fling could definitely be used, however. Toucannon is also not a Paldean, Kitakamian, or Blueberry Academy Pokémon

Bruh I read the title as "Pokemon's best designed type" whilst also registering mono poison separately for Weezing and I thought I had landed on a truly hot take.
Unironically plays a really cool role in the romhack Garbage Green. It features, along with an overall weaker powerlevel for your team, long gauntlets, like having to go through all of cycling road without many healing items for example. Here, poison types are really interesting both as allies and opponents; they make the rare psychic type invaluable, force you to play around status, represent both physical and special walls in weezing and muk and sometimes threaten explosion!
For this reason, fittingly, Weezing is unironically a top tier pokemon in this hack.
Poison is in a real cool spot nowadays as this defensive monolith that likes to use poison to wear you down. It's not even that much of a slouch offensively thanks to Fairy-types and Poison moves have a good chance to poison

Mono poison is easily one of the most fun monotypes IMO. Especially in later gens
Poison is my favorite Type due to both its punkish edge and biological depth. Weezing's got both in spades, and Neutralizing Gas is one of my favorite Abilities to ever exist. I'm so happy they gave it to Kantonian Weezing!

I love everything about Weezing. Its a uniquely equipped defensive utility mon who’s design unexpectedly goes hard for how understated it is. From its stylized yet still recognizable skull and crossbones to how its shape as a naval mine pairs perfectly with its gas vents, ability to explode, and access to fire moves to how it works as an amazing personification of air pollution with it being reminiscent of cancer and tumorous growths, infusing its design with an air of menace and maturity. Just like its role as a competitive mon, Weezing as a design is efficient and perfectly suited depending on how far you’re willing to look. This is insane.
This is an excellent love letter to Weezing, thank you for describing it this way, you’ve put me on Weezing’s side.

And in most Generations, it's not very good competitively either
Its a tie between Weezing & Arbok to me. Then you know who are my favorite characters 😂
But to me Weezing is the quintessential poison type
It's kinda amazing that the decrease in psychic types, increase in value of fighting resists and introduction of fairies all combined to make poison an above average defensive typing at this point

Your philosophy on viability is exactly my philosophy on it. Gamefreak needs to focus their energy on giving every Pokémon in the game unique traits and functions that give them all interesting roles that they can fill
Agreed, Gen 8 and Gen 9 proved that every Pokémon warrants some usage like Farigaraf, Annihilape, Garganacl and Gholdengo. They need to go back to older Pokémon like Golem, Starmie, Arbok, Sandslash and more. They should have something no other Pokémon have for them to stand out. Maybe giving Ledian and Ariados an evolution to give them hope in viability.
Ps. I think they should buff Ariados' signature Toxic Thread where it cause badly poison rather than regular poison and still maintain the speed drop.
In some alternate reality Weezing got an evolution through King's Rock.

Nobody who plays against weezing for the first time realizes just how bulky it is. Levitate with the poison type with base 120 defense is shockingly hard to break. It doesn’t fit on every team, but it’s perpetually underrated and surprisingly hard to answer because of all its unique traits.

I fell in love with Weezing for its competitive merits back in Pokemon XY. Gamefreak hosted an on cart double battles tourney called spooky cup around Halloween where only certain Halloween themed, or 'spooky' pokemon were allowed. I started looking at Weezing for the reasons you mentioned, I wanted a defensive mon with access to wisp and pain split (I was big into Rotom-Wash in OU back then, literally didn't know how to play without it on a team yet'. It surprised me at how well it filled that role and since then became my go to in any tier where it can serve that role.
Every Weezing has it's Wednesday.

Weezing and its galarian form are two pokemon that I always enjoy using and try to find ways to make it viable, glad to see you make a video about it.
Weezing is the Pokémon to use Neutralizing Gas since Galarian Weezing has too many weaknesses.
Weezing is so powerful it [gave birth to] the namesake of the authority on competitive Singles itself.

Enjoyed the analysis until the very end. Making a pokemon better through the generation gimmick is really interesting as its built of the foundations of the original. Tera water on avalugg doesn't strip it of being avalugg because no water type has avaluggs tools and stats same with the mega ledian example which you could've just mentioned mega beedrill. Mega evolution takes the base foundations of a pokemon and takes it in a whole new direction. Beedrill for example had good moves for sweeping with okay coverage but lacked the stats to fulfil the role leaving it as a dogwater toxic spikes setter. Mega beedrill recontextualised it into the ultimate glass cannon while keeping beedrill at its foundation. Making pokemon good by finding it's niche is more than fine but that doesn't mean the other way is lesser.
Releasing this on a Tuesday when you easily could have waited until Weezing Wednesday tomorrow is just another one of Jimothy Cool’s nefarious crimes

Your point about Tera and "Mega Ledian" really hits. As more mons have been added more and more of them have been heuristically classified into the "x but worse" camp which is more of a death sentence for your competitive usage than being a weaker mon with a unique niche.
It's something I really appreciate having gotten into earlier Gen OUs.

my best ever run with competative was in Gen VI when i was just casually playing with my favs, by the end i looked them up and saw my main story team all had major buffs and just took them to local tourneys, weezing was the last edition to my team around gym 5 and became my mainstay go to for tank, underrated gem for sure.

i really like weezing's design because it fits one of my favourite design tropes: sad mutations.
i was also sold on it thematically when i saw it fire blast for the first time. it's so cool to imagine it igniting its gas.

Still mad we never got a volcano themed mega weezing considering how many fire moves it gets. The galarian form learns overheat for God's sake.
Was more impressive is this all without accounting for later generations where they got Neutralizing Gas, arguably one of the best abilities in the game too.

I have loved Weezing ever since I used it in a B2/W2 Nuzlocke in which I lost almost my entire team besides a Weezing in Victory Road, and I rebuilt my team around this Weezing who went on to single-handedly neutralize Iris's Haxorus with its high base defense, Will o Wisp, and Clear Smog
I like poison types, and Weezing was a big start of kicking off that love. In gen 6 or 7, I laddered OU quite a bit casually, and I usually did so as a "Poison Type Gym Leader" with monotype teams lol. Weezing my beloved.

Koffing has been my favorite Pokémon for over 10 years - happy to see her big sister get some much deserved appreciation! & if I was a gym leader, Weezing would be my ace, no question
Crazy part is, if they boosted Weezings base special defense to 90, it would be a whole different ball game. Most of its psychic counters dont invest much special attack so it wouldnt be as damning to have it in against celebi or metagross.
I know this isn’t really the place to bring up newer Gens, but in Gen 7 UU, Muk-Alola is a beast. AV sets, in a gen where you can pursuit Latias/Ghosts like chandelure, or Knock Off utility with a Poison Touch chance while getting coverage in Fire Punch make it a demon on any team

I have always loved poison types. Muk was on my first team to beat the Elite 4 in blue, and I've pretty much always used poison types on most of my in game teams. And when I hit smogon, I almost always play in the tier where Muk works best.
No wonder our boy James loved and cherished his Weezing so much and used him in battle daily. Long live Weezing!

Very true i literally love this pokemon especially when it got neutralising gas and i use it in the current vgc meta with calyrex shadow rider and its amazing. Super bulky and Calyrex isnt affected by neutralising gas, it prevents sun and electric terrain and rain from the big legenaries, alongside mienshow with wide guard it can almost always get a burn or poison on kyorge/groudon. It also is super versatile and csn run taunt to shut down slower pokemon and oddly enough it has a rlly nice speed stat for a bulky pokemon. 10/10 pokemon not enough water
Poison is my favorite type, and I used a lot of Weezing in gen 6. Just enough stats to boom or fire blast or tspike up, wisp a sweeper, pain split the wall, and a helmet made it a check to u turn and close combat spam.
I've tried it in gen 3, but those advantages aren't there or don't feel as important. Maybe it's time to make a new Weezing team - once it's Wednesday.
I used a Weezing named Minestrone in an emerald nuzlocke, and it carried me through the game
Weezing was anti meta back in the time and still today Galar Weezing checked Urshifu so hard when it arrived last GEN that was insane and Urshifu was everywhere

Hey Jimothy, I'd like to get your opinion on Hisuyan Zoroark ? It's one of my favorite pokemon, both design and gameplay wise.
Weezing is amazing in VGC gen 9 as well. Neutralizing Gas is SO FUNNY it hurts. And not even in gimmicky teams. I think Wolfey did really well with one.

Muk is my iconic poison type. Literally sludge that was given life.
Poison types are my favourite type and I have a requirement for what makes a "true" poison type, that being a special sauce. Weezing has both levitate and willowisp which makes it lathered in 2 kinds of sauce. Unfortunately, in a playthrough of gen 3 it can't make use of its hot sauce and it doesn't learn sludge bomb or explosion via levelup, which gets it outclassed by Swalot (absolutely goated)

Given how much Jim praises Gengar's design and versatility, I imagine he just forgot Gengar was a poison type like everyone else did. Lol
I’ve long considered Weezing to be the perfect pair with Zoroark. They get similar move pools, so Zoroark can attack without arousing much suspicion, especially after the event gave it Sludge Bomb. Dark Pulse and Flamethrower, common Weezing moves, are also learned by Zoroark. When Neutralizing Steam doesn’t proc due to it being a Zoroark, the opponent might assume Levitate and try to hit with a psychic move which Zoroark is immune to. They would obviously know by then, but by then it would likely be too late.

With access to neutralising gas and wisp + toxic, Weezing is also one of the most underrated low cost pick ups in the Pokémon draft format, yet another reason why liking Weezing is considered optimal.

I use a 5 boom team with a charizard anchor in ADV on ladder and ive had good success (1600+ elo) with mixing different weezing variants. I find a set with either Shadow ball, Explosion, pain split and wil-o-wisp to be my favorite. But the Hp Fighting, shadow ball, explosion, wisp set is nice too. I'm also a fan of a fire blast set with toxic. All and all a great guy who can switch into essentially whatever and absolutely stuffs flygon and Medicham no matter the set.
I get your love for Weezing. I think poison types in general are a bit underrated. Poison stall might be kind of lame but I also think serves as important check for bulky Pokémon.

I like weezing a lot, but because koffing is my favourite pokémon i like using eviolite koffing just because how cute koffing is.
But thanks for giving more insight fir old generation how weezing is doing in the fight. Explosion was quite over powered in that thimw tho, but i knew about weezings move options, but thanks for giving competitive analysis and consideration about arena trap, shed shell wasnt in the game that thime yet, right?

Great vid overall, I have to push back on the Avalugg point a bit though, because yeah, tera Avalugg actually does offer unique traits, nothing else has that combination of obscene physical bulk, recover and spin. I understand concerns that terastalization might homogenize pokemon, and to a small extent it does, just like every other mechanic in pokemon, but the vast majority of pokemon have gained more than they've lost in terms of identity when it comes to gen 9, that's just my own opinion though.

Ngl, i have a soft spot for Weezing, too. As infuriating a Pokémon as some people may find it because of Petrel in HGSS, I never had that issue with it.
