    Estate sale looked rough as hell! Sympathize with your venting at on the drive home. I too avoid them like the plague, went to a flea market about 15 years ago and it was just full of flippers running around buying everything that was underpriced so they could put it on ebay and let them take half the profit for the pleasure. Can't imagine what they are like these days.
    That old timer trying to tell you about doing an IF alignment was also amusing! Shoulda told him you'd seen a guy on youtube called shango do them before :D

    The end drive on the 405 literally gave me anxiety flashbacks. I'm actually surprised it was MOVING!!! I really don't miss Los Angeles.....
    Anyhow, on the estate sale.... yep, all the ebay flippers are out! I learned from my Mom when she passed away. WHAT to do with all her stuff? It had meaning to her, but with exception of a few special items, none to me. (She was a dress maker) So ever since that time, I have been selling off my own "collections", as I am getting old and would rather enjoy the cash instead of being robbed by flippers after I die and they make thousands. It really changed my perspective on life. I know everyone needs to make a living, but I despise these people. Ebay is turning into Cristie's auction for the rich, it seems. Not with MY stuff!

    • @NeverMind-pk4wz
      @NeverMind-pk4wz 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Not being in TV or Radio Repair at all, but if i get my hands on electronics stuff and couldn´t make it work again (which can happen easily because if a specialized IC is dead or being unable to solder fine pitch stuff), i still go for the parts, even if its a diode, cap, resistor or whatever that could be bought nowadays for a few cents. If they prove good, they´re or course still usable for other things. We simply dont´t have any pure electronics stores leftover here in Germany like it was in the 60/70/80s, so you can´t take a ride to the next town and pick something up you need instantly, so in this case everything has to be ordered online - and i - hate - waiting for parts which i instantly need. So from my point of view there is nothing wrong about dismantling something for parts and collect them.
      We also have virtually no "Garage sales" like in the US (or probably elsewhere) where special stuff can be found, because the interest, besides drinking beer or fiddling around with modern electronics stuff at best, is likely 0%. Maybe something pops up on a flea market, but that happens barely. But if it does, i am at an advantage, because i have no competition at all and most sellers have overall no clue about what they are selling. They only see electronics trash, trying to make a bit money out of it, instead of firing it immediately into the dumpster.

    • @iRepairElectronics
      @iRepairElectronics 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i did tv and electronics repair in the late 80's and old tv's were abundant on the side of the road on nights before bulk trash pickup day. i scavenged a good many parts and tubes from them. much of it i still have.

    • @treelineresearch3387

      @@NeverMind-pk4wz I just pull the boards from stuff I scrap and throw em in a plastic tub for later scavenging when I need a part at 3AM. It comes in clutch more often than I expect.
      Same dismal scene of local electronics shops over here in the states, last one near me closed a couple years back when the old guy that owned it finally retired. Sure now I can get pretty much anything I want within a week or two, if not next day, but half the fun of the local electronics/tech surplus shop was digging through the piles of scrap looking for gems.

It was a east european make with an upright chassis hinged at the bottom, the locking screw too loose, and too short of CRT connector wires. The worst is when the family hires an estate sale company. Everyone loses.

    • @RadioAnnouncer
      @RadioAnnouncer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Not true necessarily. Ever hold your own estate sale for someone you love? It HURTS. An estate company WITH ANY CREDIBILITY or time in the business will know MORE about what items are worth than the faimily will in many cases, thus bringing more money, will ADVERTISE the sale better, and organizes it so the family doesn't have the pain of going through memories while the sale is set up. And, ask yourself, what's your time WORTH? You want to do a sale for a close family member's estate? By the hour you would never do it if you knew what the hours vs. money would be. Give THAT some thought...and I'll bet you've never had to organize one for a family member you know that passed. I have. It's painful. Hire the professional for sure! Screen for a good one that will price things, not just display them, clean them, and make it a good presentation for better money. Good ones will get you more money, and take the burden off your hands.

      @@RadioAnnouncer Indeed. I know one lady here in Tacoma that I knew when she worked at the library where I worked and found out she had an estate sale business, at that time, on the side. She only does the better sales in my area too.
      Many of the clients were collectors of fine stuff and thus a lot is beyond my pay grade, but I have often found something I can easily afford. One of the more recent items was a Dansk Kobenstyle blue butter warmer for $16, likely never used. They normally go for around $45 new.
      Many of them will be like antique dealers know the item, the maker, find out its provenance etc and then price accordingly as necessary, and can take a week, sometimes 2 weeks, just to set up, let alone seeing the place, then negotiating to do the sale etc too. When my mother passed away, we did not have an estate sale as much of what she had, we mostly wanted. I got a bunch of her prized kitchen stuff so I have items that remind me of her.
      Anyway, it will depend on the person and we went to many local sales over the years, some were better than others insofar as prices for the items were going for.

    Brake light on. Eather the oil is low or the sensor of the oil is not working and making a short or at the brake pads the wire that goes to the brake pad itself is touching ground making the light go on. There is a 3rd thing and that is the hand brake. If the switch is rubbing against itself or something that makes that light go on. You, being shango066 should restore the correct function of that light man. Best regard and I love your work. I hope you have a great future. You deserve to be rich. I am a repair guy that do everything like you and I like to help people with their stuff and I know they abuse us in the way that they like that we sort the things for them but they never pay us what is just. Just so you know, as a neurodivergent individual with autism, this man likely was not OCD. OCD stands for obsessive compulsive disorder, meaning, they have rituals they must perform in order to avoid "something bad" from happening and can rule their lives.
    This level of organization could be Autism as many of us will be that fastidious about organization, lining things up etc.
    ADHD can be the opposite, in that things left in piles is preferable as if hidden, it's out of mind and the person with ADHD will forget an item even exists being one of the symptoms of ADHD.
    Just FYI.
    Also, that set is wonderful and like the colorway of the avocado green and pale yellow and black with the blond wood.

    I’m in Australia and we have had a local station in Victoria rebirthed after being shut down 34ish years ago. 3GL that went from 1930-1990 came back on the air in march on there original 1341kz band playing non stop music from 50,60,70’s. 6 ads a hour and no news breaks. No matter what genre the show is none of it is ever boring "hits", but rather interesting, obscure quality songs that sometime you'll never hear elsewhere. I'm looking forward to your review of the Quodosen DX-286. I've had one for a week and am pretty impressed but there is a learning curve. The antenna/amplifier options are impressive. If you get this thing away from interference, you can switch to the telescoping antenna on AM/MW which outperforms the ferrite bar. This radio eats batteries though.

    Leave a note with the seller with your name and phone number and tell them that before they put it in a dumpster, you can come by and give them some money and haul some of it away saving them work and allowing them to make a little more money. It’s better than it going into the garbage at a complete loss.

It’s a dog eat dog world where pro people flock, not giving anyone a chance. Money can be made using eBay and Facebook market place. Too bad the sharks are in the water. At least they know the value of the stuff, and there’s enough suckers to pay premium plus price to have it. Different story if there was no interest.

    At 12:33 I think they used conductive paint on top of a plastic film to form an HV filter capacitor between the metal bell and the conductive paint. As a bonus that part is grounded and maybe it keeps the metal bell from arcing to some random grounded spots inside the set.

    I remember when estate sales were enjoyable; not anymore. The seller seemed to want top dollar for everything, and if he doesn't get it, most of that stuff will go to recycling. Sad that a lot of what he had will not wind up in the hands of those who truly know and appreciate what it is.

      I agree. Sadly it's been this way for quite a while now since the advent of smartphones. Smartphones/ebay/Facebook marketplace and all the flipping/reselling shows.
      I used to enjoy going to the sales a lot more than I do now. Now I go there with the understanding that there will be rude aggressive folks,a line outside unless you go hours before it starts and that the prices will likely be sky high.

    I think when you go to estate sales or the like the first sensation is to be overwhelmed then a small amount of panic sets in then you calm down and you start to take things in and look for stuff you think you really need. Then you go and splurge a load of money on some stuff you'll not look at in a decade. But sometimes you get it right and come away with some great finds you can do a lot with. Live for those days.

    In the early 1950s a lot of people did not have tv... people would gather around Retail Store windows to watch a TV that was turned on to see what all the excitement was about. Retail Stores would give TV demonstrations to introduce TV to the public.
    Local Bars in those days had one TV in operation that was a big draw to customers who visited the bar to watch sports shows.

    Shango,I go to estate sales all the time and have seen the same situations you've discussed here and worse. 99 per cent of the folks who show up at the sales seem to be flippers these days,not collectors,or hobbiests,some of them extremely aggressive and violent.Its changed a lot with the advent of smart phones and shows like pawn stars and american pickers. Everybodys a shark looking things up on their phones. I witnessed fist fights over record albums. A woman push another woman down a flight of stairs over a set of pyrex bowls she wanted to resell. Ive seen a man knock another man out over a Bernina sewing machine he claimed someone grabbed out of his hands,and two dealers having a catfight,following each other outside to damage each others cars after an argument over some George Nelson furniture.
    Ive seen flippers have "turf wars" with each other over someone moving their box/bag or other such marker saving their place in line before a sale. One time a flipper/dealer gave the people running the estate $500 to get inside early and buy all pieces he wanted before the sale and when it opened most of the things had "sold" signs on them and the guy showed up with a truck and started hauling furniture out.
    You put up with all this bs just to get into the sale only to he confronted by sky high,often higher than ebay prices,just like this sale here where the capacitors were $500. Then the estate people will complain later when they dont sell the stuff and it often winds up severely discounted in the final hours before the sale ends or winds up in the trash or at a thrift store. Yes sir,estate sales have changed a lot in the decades ive been going to them. It sucks but at least your aggressive Google lens guy did you a favor and left.
