The simple fact that you were able to get ANYTHING to show up on that screen is in itself a miracle! You never fail to amaze me with your electronics abilities. At least the tube tested great on the tester, that was also a surprise. It was also a hive with all those bumblebees in there. What a complex set, imagine putting that all together on the line.
I was at an antique shop recently and saw a 1965 Admiral Black-and-white TV in a similarly terrible cosmetic condition. Despite the grotesque appearance, it was STILL WORKING as I powered it on myself and was greeted to normal static. That speaks to the testament of quality build of televisions from that era. Nowadays, with everything turned into digital garbage, you'd be lucky if your $2,000 TV lasts for 5 years. The Admiral TV that I saw, which cost $165 in the store I was at, nearly 6 decades old, STILL had better reliability, and it looked darn near broken! Excellent work, my friend!
CRT TVs are tanks, found one on the side of a road once and it was absolutely covered in dirt everywhere and looked like it had been rained on multiple times. Was probably left outside for half a year or more. I took it in to clean it out, and when I opened it up, a bunch of bugs ran out. After giving it a good clean, it powered on and is still my main crt for retro games. Thing is in pretty bad cosmetic condition (can’t clean away cracks and scratches lol) but everything else works perfectly and it still has a very sharp picture.
1948 was the first year Philco produced TVs and that chassis was used in several sets. I just finished restoring one of those, right up there with early Dumonts for the amount of gravity in the chassis! "Beam Bender" is what they called the ion trap. The 3-35 date code on that GE replacement 5U4 is 35th week of 1953. Looking forward to Pt 2.
3-35 actually is august not 35'th week, they only changed those stamps once every month so for instance all january tubes say 04 even if they're in week 5 or week 1 also the codes aren't manufacture dates but pack dates for warranty purposes. godspeed working on those old philcos, you're a better man than i

My dad was an electronics engineer from back in the 60s. Helped him work on many tube sets growing up although my job was just looking through the piles of tubes for the right one. Great memories watching you work on this one.
By the way, if you have octal tubes where the glass has become loose from the base, at an auto supply store you can buy Permatex exhaust seal, which is a high temperature goof that will glue those two together very well. And it's cheap like $7 should be enough for 50 tubes.
When I was a teenager, I was given one of those Philcos. We got it to work but the unusual tuner was a pain in the ass. Finally installed a Standard turret tuner, which were common in the 50's 60's. I have dozens of the Loktal 7XX tubes if you're in need. Thanks for the videos.

Our Familty had A 1948 Philco simmilar to the one you have. We were living outside of New York City when they only had three channels. When additional Channels came on the air, they would have a add a strip to the tunner for that channel. Tunner had a place for only eight channels. Enjoy you videos.

Amazing! Getting a picture again is kind of refreshing to see in that roached out (fungus'd out) beater. About as amazing as the rusty desert set, but with added humidity.

I once had a 48-1201 which was the 12 inch version of the 48-1001. These TV sets w are real dogs to repair. The split chassis model sets are alot nicer to repair. I have a 16 inch split chassis and it’s a real nice set. These TVs had a really bizarre plate supply with the 5U4 and 7Y4 rectifiers. All I can say is good luck! I forgot to mention the 8 position tuner had a lot to be desired but it is still a classic set
Since this set was introduced in 1948, I wonder if those empty slots in the tuner were originally used for Channel 1, since that channel was discontinued around the same time.
The Philco Service manual (for the 48-1000) does give part numbers for a Channel 1 coil set. However, since it's only an 8 position tuner you wouldn't have slots for every channel anyway, just the channels in your area.
To bad that cabinet is so roached. Very unique set. Looking at the bottom of the chassis it is as busy as a Zenith color roundie. When you do your next installment grab a frame from your archives of a Muntz chassis. Show them side by side. The true comparison of 20 lbs of parts in a 5 lb box and being able to role a golf ball from one side to the other and not hit anything.
I love this channel, because you take things that 99.999% of people would say "forget it, it's too far gone" and bring it back from the dead after much decomposition.
Seems the desert set resurrections look horrific but at least the components have been mostly baked dry save for a few flash floods, the mold and capacitor juice in this baby are something else. I can't wait for part II !

You probably know that already. You can test tubes that have gone to air pretty easy, by letting them run for about a minute and check where they heated up. Since heated air rises the tube only warms up on the top. The bottom must stay cooler. And a warm tube, but no glowing filament is a 99% hint, that the tube has gone to air. The remaining 1% are battery driven tubes that barely glow during operation.
I once bought a radio from around the same era in somewhat better shape, but the band selector volume pot and speaker air gap were also crust-o-matic and seized. Gave up before sinking money and parts into that junk. A bit of a shame because it was built by a small local company and had a big 8" speaker.

You know,It’s incredible to think at one time this television was brand new,and someone’s prized possession,where it held a place of honor in their home. It’s was rare for someone to own a tv in 1948 and must have been exciting and a big event bringing it home. Then somehow through the years it became old,outdated and regarded as “worthless” old junk going from a place of honor in the home,and a modern marvel that was the focal point of the family’s entertainment to being abandoned and relegated to a leaky old shed. Now,where once upon a time someone’s family gathered around this then modern electronic miracle to watch television,now the set itself is the show and we gather here to witness the spectacle as Shango attempts to valiantly battle the effects of 74 years of neglect and exposure to adverse conditions to see it once again produce a picture.
TV's like this one back in the day were a luxury item, there was a time when the store guy had to come install the new TV at home in a previously designated place, because moving it caused issues with reception, it was a real chore to keep the image stable, vertical and horizontal synch had to be tweaked, just imagine that, in the 1960s it was quite a problem to deal with the vertical alone then to have to deal with the horizontal too needed huge amounts of patience.
I have a DuMont RA-113 set from 1950. Power transformer was fried. I found a replacement, used, and exchanged it with the original. Found the first electrolytic after the choke was shorted. Before I started the restoration, still ongoing, I let the chassis run at low voltage without the rectifier to heat up the tubes, and you would be amazed at the smells that came off the chassis. Musty aroma for several hours! I've replaced nearly all of the capacitors, now, and it is somewhat running. I love smelling the chassis after hours of playing. This smell takes me back to when I was little. I would stand at the back of the console TV and put my face in the cooling air stream and smell the chassis off-gassing... I used to avoid Loktal tubes. I don't know why, now. Maybe because they were hard to find for years, before the internet. All the best to you on this restoration. When I saw that Candohm resistor, I thought of my DuMont.
yeah not good when the core of the transformer is rusted out. Even if the windings are in perfect condition, if the core is rusted and the lamination's are shorted the eddy currents will cause it to be so inefficient that it will eventually go up in smoke. Motors are the same way. Trying to one up me and my creek find computer terminal? You're a Legend!
the "G E" rect tube( 5u4) was made the 35th week of 1953, and the # 188 is the "EIA" code .I worked on one of those sets back in 1978, those sets were real "BALL BUSTERS" ,just like zenith sets, "the lead went in before the name went on"

"O.E.M." tubes will be date coded. "G.E.,R.C.A .sylvania, westinghouse" made their own tubes that was used in their electronic equipment. other electronic companies sourced out the tubes that they used as "O.E.M.". those tubes will be date coded, and have the "E.I.A." code ( electronic industries association).zenith sourced 5 tube companies, G.E(code 188), R.C.A.(code 274) raytheon( code 280, sylvania( code 312) westinghouse( code 337). on R.C.A. tubes the "O.E.M." ink used on the tube is white( service replacement tubes used orange ink with no date code).sylvania used different color ink on their tubes, and that signified the quality pick of the tube( white ink was premium pick used by the military, green ink was 1st pick tubes used in sylvania electronic equipment, 2nd pick tubes was yellow ink used in "O.E.M. and service replacement", 3rd pick tubes was red ink, and these tubes were used by "U-TEST-M" company that had tube testers in drug stores, and hardware stores. these tubes were below quality standards, and were one step away from the dumpster!!!!. also, sylvania numbers are read top to bottom( vertically)on their tubes. as far as date codes go, from 1946 to 1955 it will only be one number of the year( in 1956 it became two numbers). the year is always the first set of numbers fallowed by a dash, and the last set of numbers are the week( 1 to 52) of manufacture. in the 70's , a lot of "G.E." tubes were made by "R.C.A" and how you can spot that is the tube type located on the side will have a "HEXAGON" ( stop sign) around the tube type number/ letter combination. I have been doing electronics work for 55+ years, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask, I will respond back to you. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!! P.S. I got my hands on a 1950 R.C.A t.v. set in 2005, that was stored in a barn for 35 years. the cabinet was in good shape. the chassis was in the same shape as this 1948 philco t. v. set due to the habitation of "MICE". I had to strip the chassis down to nothing( all components removed), and rebuild it from scratch including the tuner, it was stuck also( all new tube sockets, resistors ,capacitors, vertical blocking transformer, wiring ect.) the chassis was sanded down and repainted silver. the power transformer, and high voltage cage was sanded down and painted black. on start up, and doing the alignment, it runs like a new set( the C.R.T. tested good) I know that I am making "DAVID SARNOFF" a very happy man, R.I.P. ( C.E.O. of R.C.A.)
Getting this TV to play is nothing short of a miracle. Only a miracle worker like shango can get the task done. The best resurrection to date. I cannot wait for the follow up with this TV and see a picture on the screen .THANKS

in 1948 only 5% of Americans had a TV in their house. There were only a couple of shows on TV- Howdy Doody (1947), the Texaco Star Theater starring Milton Berle (1948), and CBS TV News (1948). By 1950, 9% of American households had a TV, and by 1960 is was 87%
My first thoughts upon having seen the front and top of the chassis were: "Oh boy, Shango066 must need a new drug, he's trying flood-sets now!" :) Pass me that flex-ohm please, I need to run an emery board up and down the length of it... I've been jonesing for lack of asbestos since the war kicked off and curtailed the soviet surplus supply on the open market.

That one is a beauty. Keep that front face plate just the way it is. It's a perfect match to new style furniture finishes. And the crooked crt with spider webs and wood veneer in the corner hanging! I bet it even has smellavision going on. Time for a re capacitate.
This looks like the ultimate resurrection! If this lives, anything can. My bet is that many caps and resistors need swapping to get a picture, they are probably all full of moisture. I'm surprised no tubes seemed to be red plating, or maybe they are hiding behind the "patina" :D
Since I have a 48-1000 I'm definitely enjoying this. Didn't have any of those square black paper caps but lots of "standard" paper caps that all got replaced. No "fine tuning", you adjust a coil on each of the tuner snap-ins through a hole under the selector knob and it's supposed to have AFT. Apparently it never worked right because Philco offered a mod where you replace one of the controls with a dual pot with one section being the "fine tuning". Great work as always!
I had to laugh when you took the drill motor to the tuner shaft...from the depths of my brain I could hear the voice of my Dad circa 1958, yelling "DON'T SPIN THE TUNER DIAL...YOU'LL RUIN IT!!!"

I really like that set. Shame it is so corroded and the cabinet rotted. It would be a huge amount of work to make a new cabinet and clean up the chassis, but what a satisfying project it would be.
The gun produced electrons but also ions which are not deflected by the deflection coil so it will eventually ruin the center of the crt, here the electrons are aimed to the side and the magnet deflects the electron beam straight and the ions are just collected as waste. newer crt had some type of coating on the screen that collected the ions.

You are certifiably insane, and I'm loving every minute of it. I too own a 48-1001 that I restored cosmetically and electronically and it is in my Top 3 post-war tv performers. The picture quality is 3-D superb. Slightly better than my RCA 630TS and my DuMont RA-103 Chatham. All three are waaay overengineered for what they have to do. But for picture quality amongst early pw televisions, the Philco takes the cake. Sound Quality goes to the RCA and the DuMont. The tuner in the 48-1001 is a soft spot. What I find incredible is that you woke up the HV section with a bare minimum of effort. I have a request. After you are through raising Lazarus from the dead could you remove and send to me the Channel Indicator Dial and the Selector and Fine Tuning Knobs? My pristine example is missing those. The voice-coil done got seized up by corrosion in that speaker! Only place there might be a worse-condition TV would be a sunken ship! Impressive that you got anything out of this mushroom-garden set.

That type of date code @ (15:07) was a common code on tubes, "3-35". The first number is the 2nd digit in the decade, the 2nd number is the week. So, it was made in the 35th week of 1953, 1963, etc. Since it's one of the old coke-bottle type, '53 is my guess. Being a GE tube it was certainly not original. The "188-5" is the facility where the tube was actually made. This was explained to me by an old radio & TV repairman/mentor/best friend that was in the business for 50 years. From what he said there were few actual manufacturing facilities that produced the tubes. RCA, GE, Sylvania had their own manufacturing. 90% of tubes were just rebrands from those facilities. I'm sure there were a few smaller companies that made aftermarket tubes. Sharp-eyed bottleheads can spot the similarities.

Until 1960, the EIA date code had only three digits. First digit is the year. In the case of the rectifier tube, 1953. The number 188 is General Electric's EIA member number. The "dash-5" referred to the Ky-Rad tube plant in Owensboro KY that GE owned and operated for decades.
Pretty sure I have a large Philco console that had the tv chassis missing but still has the radio and record player. I refinished the cabinet which has gorgeous veneer. I am going to have to check to see because I may be interested in the chassis.
Beam benders also show up on the Zenith porthole sets as well as some late 40s Admiral sets. They center the image I believe. Both horizontally and vertically.
I have a 1950 Meck Philharmonic TV that it came out of an old farm house that the roof had collapsed on it over 20 years ago but the wooden cabinet was still in good shape and also the chassis was not very badly corroded either. I got the TV recapped and it works like new but the video IF is in desperate need of alignment.
Worlds greatest TV repairman. No one else would even try to fix this.

Now,where once upon a time someone’s family gathered around this then modern electronic miracle to watch television,now the set itself is the show and we gather here to witness the spectacle as Shango attempts to valiantly battle the effects of 74 years of neglect and exposure to adverse conditions to see it once again produce a picture.
TV's like this one back in the day were a luxury item, there was a time when the store guy had to come install the new TV at home in a previously designated place, because moving it caused issues with reception, it was a real chore to keep the image stable, vertical and horizontal synch had to be tweaked, just imagine that, in the 1960s it was quite a problem to deal with the vertical alone then to have to deal with the horizontal too needed huge amounts of patience.
At least it was in a leaky old shed and not the landfill.

I have a DuMont RA-113 set from 1950. Power transformer was fried. I found a replacement, used, and exchanged it with the original. Found the first electrolytic after the choke was shorted. Before I started the restoration, still ongoing, I let the chassis run at low voltage without the rectifier to heat up the tubes, and you would be amazed at the smells that came off the chassis. Musty aroma for several hours!
I've replaced nearly all of the capacitors, now, and it is somewhat running. I love smelling the chassis after hours of playing. This smell takes me back to when I was little. I would stand at the back of the console TV and put my face in the cooling air stream and smell the chassis off-gassing...
I used to avoid Loktal tubes. I don't know why, now. Maybe because they were hard to find for years, before the internet.

yeah not good when the core of the transformer is rusted out. Even if the windings are in perfect condition, if the core is rusted and the lamination's are shorted the eddy currents will cause it to be so inefficient that it will eventually go up in smoke. Motors are the same way.

the "G E" rect tube( 5u4) was made the 35th week of 1953, and the # 188 is the "EIA" code .I worked on one of those sets back in 1978, those sets were real "BALL BUSTERS" ,just like zenith sets, "the lead went in before the name went on"

@@cassandrajoiner9933 ,the service tubes(all manufacturers) do not have date codes on the tube, the tubes will have initials on them ,that is the person who branded the tube at the factory. "O.E.M." tubes will be date coded. "G.E.,R.C.A .sylvania, westinghouse" made their own tubes that was used in their electronic equipment. other electronic companies sourced out the tubes that they used as "O.E.M.". those tubes will be date coded, and have the "E.I.A." code ( electronic industries association).zenith sourced 5 tube companies, G.E(code 188), R.C.A.(code 274) raytheon( code 280, sylvania( code 312) westinghouse( code 337). on R.C.A. tubes the "O.E.M." ink used on the tube is white( service replacement tubes used orange ink with no date code).sylvania used different color ink on their tubes, and that signified the quality pick of the tube( white ink was premium pick used by the military, green ink was 1st pick tubes used in sylvania electronic equipment, 2nd pick tubes was yellow ink used in "O.E.M. and service replacement", 3rd pick tubes was red ink, and these tubes were used by "U-TEST-M" company that had tube testers in drug stores, and hardware stores. these tubes were below quality standards, and were one step away from the dumpster!!!!. also, sylvania numbers are read top to bottom( vertically)on their tubes. as far as date codes go, from 1946 to 1955 it will only be one number of the year( in 1956 it became two numbers). the year is always the first set of numbers fallowed by a dash, and the last set of numbers are the week( 1 to 52) of manufacture. in the 70's , a lot of "G.E." tubes were made by "R.C.A" and how you can spot that is the tube type located on the side will have a "HEXAGON" ( stop sign) around the tube type number/ letter combination. I have been doing electronics work for 55+ years, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask, I will respond back to you. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!! P.S. I got my hands on a 1950 R.C.A t.v. set in 2005, that was stored in a barn for 35 years. the cabinet was in good shape. the chassis was in the same shape as this 1948 philco t. v. set due to the habitation of "MICE". I had to strip the chassis down to nothing( all components removed), and rebuild it from scratch including the tuner, it was stuck also( all new tube sockets, resistors ,capacitors, vertical blocking transformer, wiring ect.) the chassis was sanded down and repainted silver. the power transformer, and high voltage cage was sanded down and painted black. on start up, and doing the alignment, it runs like a new set( the C.R.T. tested good) I know that I am making "DAVID SARNOFF" a very happy man, R.I.P. ( C.E.O. of R.C.A.)

in 1948 only 5% of Americans had a TV in their house. There were only a couple of shows on TV- Howdy Doody (1947), the Texaco Star Theater starring Milton Berle (1948), and CBS TV News (1948). By 1950, 9% of American households had a TV, and by 1960 is was 87%
I remember as far as 1960....when Johnny Reb would air. Later on ...Saturday mornings we'd watch Sky King, Fury and all the old cartoons.

My first thoughts upon having seen the front and top of the chassis were: "Oh boy, Shango066 must need a new drug, he's trying flood-sets now!" :) Pass me that flex-ohm please, I need to run an emery board up and down the length of it... I've been jonesing for lack of asbestos since the war kicked off and curtailed the soviet surplus supply on the open market.

Those oozing capacitors are extremely suspect. The drill driven channel selector is priceless. A challenge to get this TV going.
That one is a beauty. Keep that front face plate just the way it is. It's a perfect match to new style furniture finishes. And the crooked crt with spider webs and wood veneer in the corner hanging! I bet it even has smellavision going on. Time for a re capacitate.

This looks like the ultimate resurrection! If this lives, anything can. My bet is that many caps and resistors need swapping to get a picture, they are probably all full of moisture. I'm surprised no tubes seemed to be red plating, or maybe they are hiding behind the "patina" :D

Since I have a 48-1000 I'm definitely enjoying this. Didn't have any of those square black paper caps but lots of "standard" paper caps that all got replaced. No "fine tuning", you adjust a coil on each of the tuner snap-ins through a hole under the selector knob and it's supposed to have AFT. Apparently it never worked right because Philco offered a mod where you replace one of the controls with a dual pot with one section being the "fine tuning". Great work as always!
I had to laugh when you took the drill motor to the tuner shaft...from the depths of my brain I could hear the voice of my Dad circa 1958, yelling "DON'T SPIN THE TUNER DIAL...YOU'LL RUIN IT!!!"

I really like that set. Shame it is so corroded and the cabinet rotted. It would be a huge amount of work to make a new cabinet and clean up the chassis, but what a satisfying project it would be.

The gun produced electrons but also ions which are not deflected by the deflection coil so it will eventually ruin the center of the crt, here the electrons are aimed to the side and the magnet deflects the electron beam straight and the ions are just collected as waste. newer crt had some type of coating on the screen that collected the ions.

You are certifiably insane, and I'm loving every minute of it. I too own a 48-1001 that I restored cosmetically and electronically and it is in my Top 3 post-war tv performers. The picture quality is 3-D superb. Slightly better than my RCA 630TS and my DuMont RA-103 Chatham. All three are waaay overengineered for what they have to do. But for picture quality amongst early pw televisions, the Philco takes the cake. Sound Quality goes to the RCA and the DuMont. The tuner in the 48-1001 is a soft spot.
What I find incredible is that you woke up the HV section with a bare minimum of effort.
I have a request. After you are through raising Lazarus from the dead could you remove and send to me the Channel Indicator Dial and the Selector and Fine Tuning Knobs? My pristine example is missing those.

i can honestly say that this is the first tv with dry rot i have ever seen.
The voice-coil done got seized up by corrosion in that speaker!
Only place there might be a worse-condition TV would be a sunken ship!

That type of date code @ (15:07) was a common code on tubes, "3-35". The first number is the 2nd digit in the decade, the 2nd number is the week. So, it was made in the 35th week of 1953, 1963, etc. Since it's one of the old coke-bottle type, '53 is my guess. Being a GE tube it was certainly not original.
The "188-5" is the facility where the tube was actually made. This was explained to me by an old radio & TV repairman/mentor/best friend that was in the business for 50 years.
From what he said there were few actual manufacturing facilities that produced the tubes. RCA, GE, Sylvania had their own manufacturing. 90% of tubes were just rebrands from those facilities. I'm sure there were a few smaller companies that made aftermarket tubes. Sharp-eyed bottleheads can spot the similarities.

Until 1960, the EIA date code had only three digits. First digit is the year. In the case of the rectifier tube, 1953. The number 188 is General Electric's EIA member number. The "dash-5" referred to the Ky-Rad tube plant in Owensboro KY that GE owned and operated for decades.
Pretty sure I have a large Philco console that had the tv chassis missing but still has the radio and record player. I refinished the cabinet which has gorgeous veneer. I am going to have to check to see because I may be interested in the chassis.
mine is a philco 49-1076, I wonder if this chassis would fit in my console?
Beam benders also show up on the Zenith porthole sets as well as some late 40s Admiral sets. They center the image I believe. Both horizontally and vertically.
I have a 1950 Meck Philharmonic TV that it came out of an old farm house that the roof had collapsed on it over 20 years ago but the wooden cabinet was still in good shape and also the chassis was not very badly corroded either. I got the TV recapped and it works like new but the video IF is in desperate need of alignment.
