Personally I would wait for nightfall. YellowJackets return to the nest at night. That allows you to seal the nest off and gas it, and which is generally the safest way to deal with them.

I had a horrific experience with Yellow Jackets when I was 11. I climbed a tree and did not notice a Yellow Jacket nest. They got me all over. Face, chest , back , head , legs I had over 200 stings !! I dropped down so fast from the tree screaming . A neighbor took me into her house and thank God she saved me !! She was stung a few times.

I found one of their ground nests with a string trimmer one time. Luckily I saw them coming out before they were all swarming around me and I dropped the trimmer and ran inside. They attacked that trimmer like you wouldn't believe because it was sitting there idling and making vibrations. I stayed inside for several hours after it ran out of gas to give them time to calm down.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to neutralize a yellow jacket hive is with WD-40. Just one drop of the thin oil coats and chokes them and also makes them unable to fly. I use two cans at a time; one set to fog and one set to spray a stream with the straw. Start fogging the hive as you approach to kill all flying around, then focus the fogger on the hive entrance while you stab the other can's straw through the hive and soak the inside. No stings and no survivors 😁

If you have these building nests - with a bee suit - then just taking a honey bee smoker and a butane torch, on low flame - all you need to do - same as smoking bee hives - is smoke and confuse all the insect hormone attack aromas (stopping communications). Then put the flame (and holding it) to the entrance, burning the paper nest ... and as the wasps/hornets come out the flame(s) will burn off their wings - and then they all turn into crawling "ants" - instead of flying attack and stinging insects !!!

I have had very good success using soapy water to kill yellow jackets and wasps. A pump up garden sprayer works very well, a few gallons of water and half a cup of liquid dishwashing soap . The spray will knock them out of the air and they will suffocate and die quickly. (it works because it decreases the surface tension of water and the water gets into their breathing tubes, they basically drown/suffocate in under a minute).

    • @Swalsh308
      @Swalsh308 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup this is my go to method as well; I use Dawn dish soap. A garden sprayer for large nests and just a plastic spray bottle for smaller ones.
For anyone wanting to try this I’ve found the key is to use lots of soap. Just getting your sprayer to spit out water with some bubbles isn’t enough. The water coming out has to have enough soap in it that it feels noticeably slippery when you spray it on your hand. Do this and they drop within seconds.

I got 8 stings and went to urgent care…was given epinephrine shot and transported by ambulance to local hospital ER for a six-hour stay. Absolutely nothing to mess with.

My Dad, a beekeeping hobbyist, was called upon to remove a yellow jacket hive from a neighbor's shed. He set up a canister vacuum cleaner with disposable bag, the end of the hose near the entrance to the hive. The yellow jackets were "sucked" into the hose and wound up in the bag. After a couple hours or so, the number of yellow jackets remaining was down to a bare few and Dad was able to pull down the nest. I thought that all the yellow jackets would fly out of the vacuum cleaner once he shut it off, but that wasn't the case at all. I think that they were all dead and all he needed to do was replace the bag.
The vacuum cleaner may be a good idea for in ground nests. Vacuum up nearly all the yellow jackets before digging up the nest!

I used a shop vac for a yellowjacket hive in the siding of house wall about 3 feet above ground level. I placed the vac at the main entrance/exit and turned it on with the shop vac filled with water. After one hour I went back to check to find hundreds drown. Repeated this for 3 straight days with same result. I finally called an exterminator. He said the hive probably had thousands inside my sidings . He applied his professional spray and told me it works because the insects get the poison on their feet and then enter the hive to infect those inside. It cost me $125 but ended this invasion of my home in just a few hours. He sprayed around the base and roof area of my entire home during the process. That was 3 years ago and I haven't had any more yellowjacket problems but some of my neighbors sure have.

Once in my 20’s there was a large nest about 6 ft directly above my front door. I thought I’d be clever and cover it with a bucket, then slide a piece of metal in and capture the whole thing. I placed the bucket, then noticed they were flying all around me! I jumped off the ladder, broke the porch when I landed, and ran away. No injuries or bites, I was very lucky!

The ones that you find in the Deep South are the ones that live in the ground and they are particularly nasty. I’ve lived in the south all my life and have tromped through the woods many times and have never been attacked by any snake or wild animal. The only thing I’ve been attacked by are fire ants and yellow jackets that live in the ground. If you make enough commotion snakes will get out of your way, but you get anywhere near an underground yellow jacket nest they will attack you. There is nothing I’ve ever experienced that is more dangerous, aggressive, and flat out berserker mean than subterranean yellow jackets. Those are the things I fear most in the wild.

Great video Shawn! I always puff a few puffs of Sevin or Eight crop dust into the holes when I find them in the ground. They carry it to the rest of the hive when they land and enter. I have to wonder if this method would work for hives off the ground? I had a hive in the attic one year as they had found a hole just under the eave. I sprayed a feather duster I had attached to a long pole with pesticide then placed it just over the hole forcing them to land on it before entering their hole. After a few days of refreshing the dust the hive died.

I have a yellow jacket nest being built in a crawl space under my house, and the entrance is about ten feet from the entrance of another nest on my neighbors house, so I'm seeing a rare occurrence of two colonies within spitting distance competing for influence and resources. The ones coming from my house are going to the neighbors to chew off bits of wood to expand their nest, and the number of individuals I've seen buzzing around the nest has grown exponentially while those from the other nest have dwindled.

Not a chance in heck, would I try that 'stunt' LOL
If I don't have and 'Hornet Blaster' close by, I arm myself with a couple of spray cans of 'brake clearer' which will kill these pests at once, on contact. I've even managed to hit of few wasps/hornets while they were flying and they dropped dead at once. Best thing is 'brake cleaner' leaves no trace as it evaporates quickly.
If you want proof of how effective this is, try it on one of these pests as they come inside your shop or garage, and go for a closed window, grab a spray tin, and douse them, see how they drop dead.

I want to share a couple of experiences that I had with these. A queen started a hive just over my front door. It was just a few cells and she was the only wasp I could see. I got rid of this small hive by using the trick of moving very, very slowly. The hive was about nine feet up. I went and got my ice scraper. I very, very, slowly moved it closer, and closer to the hive. The wasp didn't react to the scraper at all, as the blade came closer and closer to her new hive. I just slowly scraped it off, then the queen flew away.
Next year, yellow jackets built a hive in my plastic composer-tumbler. After reading about the benefits of having yellow jackets in the garden, because they prey on pests, I decided to let them be. I didn't regret this decision at all. They never became aggressive. I was able to walk right next to them and even use my trimmer near the composter, and they never even buzzed around me. They just quietly eat all of the pests in my garden.
This year, a couple of brown paper wasps started a nest under my second floor, street facing, window. I tried shoeing them away by spraying them with my hose but they just came back. So, I went to the store and bought a new nozzle that concentrated the spray. When that didn't work either, I zip tied the hose to a pole that I use to put up Christmas decorations. This allowed me to get that concentrated water spray right on top of the nest. It blasted the hive right off the window and the brown wasp just flew away.

The ones here won't fly in the dark, so I just go out at night and give the nest a squirt of carb spray. But only if the nests are where people go. That's really the only time they're aggressive, when someone or something gets too close. Otherwise they have their place.
