The NSU Prinz was the first car I got on when my parents picked me up at the hospital. My little brother went in a Ro 80... I have some memories of both cars. 200 something kilometer per hour on the Autobahn...

The first One is a Alpine A110 1600S or 1800Gr4, The Alpine A110 won two world rally championship in 1971 (1600S) and in 1973 (1800Gr4). The 1600S was given for about 150hp and up to 200hp for the 1800Gr4 for 700kg at most. This car is a true racing legend in France and in Europe. Still very popular in Japan too
Love the old Alpine A110 (1st car we see in the Video). It got a revival few years ago, and Gendarmerie's highway patrols have these :) Slick sexy cars.
The first car is a Alpine A110 from the 70s if i remember correctly, not sure if it's a 70, 72 or 73 but if i had the money. It would already be in my garage haha (only downside is that i'm 6.7ft tall 😆)
2:38 Alfa Romeo 75 - 20 yrs ago my friend bought that same Alfa used, as his first car. He got one that had been in a heated garage and only was driven on saturdays for groceries. It was owned by an elderly lady who couldn't drive, so she had it just so a friend of hers could drive her when she needed to shop. It was mint condition andd we gave it a beating like it never had in its entire life when he got it! :D
You'd be surprised to know that the Ferrari 308 actually had a Group 4 rally version, and later even a Group B version (you know Group B very well by now), and was successful in the early 80s, and is still quite a popular classic supercar in rallies (not on the same level as the Stratos or old 911s but decently popular). Also, one of the most iconic Ferraris ever made, the 288 GTO, was also conceived as a Group B car. Not a rally car per se, but it was still made with Group B competition in mind, which involved rallies.
When I was a kid I used to go watch those cars as the rallye would pass through my village. When he was younger, my father used to drive an R8 Gordini like the one at 1:35, it was in the 70s. Really fun times were had watching those cars.
I owned a Renault R8 Gordini as a steet car/daily driver back around 1989. I have owned 2 MGBs , one a 64 sold 2 years ago and currently a 1963. ( I have owned 30 Brit cars) Only Porsche I owned was a 1953 Bent Window Coupe back around 1965. I owned a 1974 M-B 450 SL (I am a former M-B of No America factory rep Nor Calif. region) STRATOS and the ALPINE..... the Best. Excellent video.
The blue one with 2 white stripes at 1.30 is a Renault R8 Gordini a legend for car racers in France, in the 60's and the 70's Gordini was the official preparer of Renault sport (Rally, 24h du Mans,…) a bit like AMG for Mercedes!
Alpine A110 is like a Porsche: rwd with rear engine behind the rear wheels. But beam frame. When Jean Redele , the founder created Alpine, he used Renault parts that he sold and when Porsche created 356 based on Beetle, Redele based his car on Renault 4CV, a small sedan with rwd and behind rear wheels engine. Alpine won the first World Rally championship as builder in 1973. But there was no wrc before. But won so many races. And wrc for pilots didn't exist but do many alpine pilots could win it if it was exist. Alpine is Renault group brand. Race in endurance and won some categories in le Mans. It's now a formula 1 team too and sell the New A110. It's the alpine engineers who created first Renault turbo formula one ancestor, Renault 5 turbo, all modern sport version of Renault 's road cars with Renault sport. And created A108, A310, GTA, A610, Renault spider models. It's legend.
My previous car (until 2003) was one of those Renault 5 GT Turbo (the one seen in the video) and it was the most fun to drive car I've ever had. By far.

Love the old Escort at 5:54, the first car my family got in Australia in 1970 was that shape Escort (but 4 door automatic) and I learned to drive in it. The Galaxie looked rather out of place.

Never seen i Renault Gordini before? i remember hitting my head so had in the bak of one of those as a kid. it was fully caged and wen tover the speedbump a bit to fast. dam those cages hurt when you hit them.
Yep the porche got some acceleration. I droveca normally aspirated 3 litre carrerra back in the 80's - 2nd gear 30mph floored it & it kicks you back in the seat. Wasn't minec- i worked for a jag garagecat the time. The bmw m3 was quick as well.
That first one is, as mentioned by Lynott Parris below/above, an Alpine 110, Alpine is a sports car maker, but became part of the Renault group. The 110 is rear (Renault 4cyl) engined, fibreglass bodied, and has a top reputation in the rally world. They made a later model as well, which I think was more mid/rear engine. There was no R5 Gordini. But there was an R5 Alpine (93hp) launched in 1976. An R5 Turbo (I and II) and there was an R5 Alpine Turbo, with 108hp, straight from the factory. And these cars offered an excellent platform to tease out even more performance...

A quick search on the renaultsport club forum and I found an article, it shows a picture of the engine with only the wording RENAULT on the valve cover (also a 1979 na model).
this liitle blue one on the photo is a Simca 1300 ,a french brand that later becomes Talbot before they died: . but the other small car in front of it is aNSU , a former german brand that later becomes AUDI!
at 06:46 the oragne BMW is a "02" in this era the engine displacement was part of the Model, and put in the first 2 digits, so the 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002 were with 1.5l, 1.6l, 1.8l and 2.0l engines respectively. The cars were built from 1966 through 1977, and it's successor was the 3 Series Model E21, which was introduced in '75. Cheers from Austria.

Er brauchte nur Normalbenzin und war mit seinen 75 PS eine Sparversion, die den Einstieg in die BMW- Welt erleichtern sollte. Und auch dieser 1502 war es, der noch von 1975- 1977 gebaut wurde, parallel zum E 21. Denn alle anderen 02- Modelle, wurden seit der Einführung des E 21, 1975 nicht mehr produziert.

Historic rallying is now more popular than ever and gaining popularity year on year. The fundamental is that as you can see here the variety of cars competing is very wide, whereas in todays WRC the cars all look the same with disruptive camouflage paint schemes hiding any subtle differences, the rules are even written to assist this anonymity. If you can recognise the cars you can recognise the heros. Even when foucus was on the ultimate performance as in Group B, the variety was still there and an Audi Quatro Sport could be easily distinguished from a Peugeot 205 T16 and a Metro 6R$ for example, whatever the paint scheme.

The Alpine A110 was available in the US at the time I don't know if it was officially or a private company who imported some from the Mexican plant. A convertible version was made and marketed for the Mexican market only, they are ultra rare. On a side note the A110 stopped winning when Lancia released the Stratos.
G'day Ian. At 1:36 is a Ford Falcon Sprint from the US around 63 or 64 built. 260 or 289 V8 with lots of lightweight panels. I understand the Falcon Sprint was fastest on every stage when it ran back then but did not win the rally over small engines Mini Cooper S cars. The rules had a handicap system that took the win off large engines cars
Alfa GTV and 75 are the same frame. Front engine RWD with transaxle Gear with great engines: bialbiero with the best : turbo version and twin spark version. It was équipped with pre VANOS or VTEC système...sort of....and V6 arese also called busso. Wonderful.
The original Golf GTI was a beast of its time - could get em up over 220km/h. just stock. And most I talked to claimed 240km/h was more lioke the actual top speed
Classic Rallying is fun because most "Histo-rallies" are run with the cars meant to meet a certain time, rather than "who's the fastest". Often you get drivers still going all-out, and then CRAWLING the last few meters to get their average down to the desired area.
Look at Jean Ragnotti doing 360° at speed of 110 kmh with Renault 5 maxi. One of the Best pilot in rallye. 😉. Another mythic car, simca rallye 2 with rear engine or renault dauphine gordini.
When the audi 4x4s came in to rallying the lancia stratos and beta's were the only 2wd's to beat them , the beta's were massively successful but all but gone now. A bad era for Italian steel but a great one for their engineering. Cool reaction mate

You are completely right, I was confusing the stratos with the 037, but I'm sure I read that the first year lancia ran the 037 the team held the beta's back in the last two stages to let the 037 take the overall win which made me think the beta's must've been beating the quatros too. But again you are dead right about the 037.
Renault r8 gordini very cool cars 4 wheel discs under driven top gear and s self centring steering rack so easy to drive very light I raced an r10 in the 90s ,the alpine a110 was built using r8 and 10 parts with composite body two cool cars with race connections
Some great cars there, not to mention the Escort Mk1 at 6.04. Great cars, worth a small fortune now. Mine cost £14k (in 1993 when I bought it, insured for 50k now)
the green car around 5:25 fwd (#141), I think that is may be an MG (and someone else has mentioned an MG-B below) but I wonder from the sound whether is is a V8 version? I know that there were some produced. It will be a custom hard top I think. Anyway, ghastly car to drive as the wheelbase was too long :-) So says an Abarth owner!

The gaps: 0:57 Is an E21 3 Series (the first series) BMW, probably a 320 2.0l i6, since it sounds like a six, but only has one tailpipe 1:37 you should know :) I actually don't. Ford Cortina maybe? Or some GTO? 1:56 is a Ferrari 308 2:13 is another E21, this time looked like two tailpipes, so that would make it a 323i. 3:45 is a Mercedes SL R 107 (It sounds like a 280, 6 cylinder, all others were V8). The looks of this car are based on the Meredes Rallye SLC, which was the coupe version of this. 4:13 is a Mitsubishi (well done), a second gen Lancer 5:12 is a VW Golf 1st Gen (1st facelift with the larger plastic bumpers) 5:55 IS a 1st gen Escort (well done again!) 6:43 is an early (round taillights) 02-Series BMW, meaning it could be anything from a 1502 to a 2002tii. Generally though, you are correct :) The E21 BMW did have dual headlights for the 6cyl models, and single for the 4cyl.
1:37 is the US Ford Falcon Sprint. Made a year or two before the Mustang became the Ford performance car instead of an image based secretarys car it started as.

1:55 this is a Ferrari (308 if my memory is good). In the late 70's and the early 80's there was teams which used Ferraris because Ferraris are fast and in the 60's don't forget that the 250 GTO was an unbeatable car everywhere (the 250 GTO won the mille miglia and this is a rally) in the early 80's Ferrari try to create a car to run in group B (the 288 GTO) but the group B was canceled before they could run and Ferrari decided to transform the car into the...F40 2:35 ho!!! my brother's car (he had exactely the same alfa 75)

My father had an R5 turbo in the 1980s. 160 hp at an unladen weight of 980 kg were a real hit at the time. The thing was scary.

The 1600S was given for about 150hp and up to 200hp for the 1800Gr4 for 700kg at most. This car is a true racing legend in France and in Europe. Still very popular in Japan too

The first car is a Alpine A110 from the 70s if i remember correctly, not sure if it's a 70, 72 or 73 but if i had the money. It would already be in my garage haha (only downside is that i'm 6.7ft tall 😆)

2:38 Alfa Romeo 75 - 20 yrs ago my friend bought that same Alfa used, as his first car. He got one that had been in a heated garage and only was driven on saturdays for groceries. It was owned by an elderly lady who couldn't drive, so she had it just so a friend of hers could drive her when she needed to shop. It was mint condition andd we gave it a beating like it never had in its entire life when he got it! :D

You'd be surprised to know that the Ferrari 308 actually had a Group 4 rally version, and later even a Group B version (you know Group B very well by now), and was successful in the early 80s, and is still quite a popular classic supercar in rallies (not on the same level as the Stratos or old 911s but decently popular). Also, one of the most iconic Ferraris ever made, the 288 GTO, was also conceived as a Group B car. Not a rally car per se, but it was still made with Group B competition in mind, which involved rallies.
When I was a kid I used to go watch those cars as the rallye would pass through my village. When he was younger, my father used to drive an R8 Gordini like the one at 1:35, it was in the 70s. Really fun times were had watching those cars.
I owned a Renault R8 Gordini as a steet car/daily driver back around 1989.
I have owned 2 MGBs , one a 64 sold 2 years ago and currently a 1963. ( I have owned 30 Brit cars)
Only Porsche I owned was a 1953 Bent Window Coupe back around 1965.

The blue one with 2 white stripes at 1.30 is a Renault R8 Gordini a legend for car racers in France, in the 60's and the 70's Gordini was the official preparer of Renault sport (Rally, 24h du Mans,…) a bit like AMG for Mercedes!

Alpine A110 is like a Porsche: rwd with rear engine behind the rear wheels. But beam frame. When Jean Redele , the founder created Alpine, he used Renault parts that he sold and when Porsche created 356 based on Beetle, Redele based his car on Renault 4CV, a small sedan with rwd and behind rear wheels engine. Alpine won the first World Rally championship as builder in 1973. But there was no wrc before. But won so many races. And wrc for pilots didn't exist but do many alpine pilots could win it if it was exist. Alpine is Renault group brand. Race in endurance and won some categories in le Mans. It's now a formula 1 team too and sell the New A110. It's the alpine engineers who created first Renault turbo formula one ancestor, Renault 5 turbo, all modern sport version of Renault 's road cars with Renault sport. And created A108, A310, GTA, A610, Renault spider models. It's legend.

My previous car (until 2003) was one of those Renault 5 GT Turbo (the one seen in the video) and it was the most fun to drive car I've ever had. By far.
The first Alfa was a GTV, the second was a Alfa 75 I believe( The Malaysian police used them as patrol cars ). Yes, that was a Ferrari. I have an old diecast toy Ferrari I bought in the 80s with Rally lights mounted on the hood.
It´s right, An Alfa Romeo alfetta GTV 2.0 and then the 75 3.0 V6 America (it´s called America because the bumpers with the USA homologation at the time)

Maybe next you could react to a vintage car show from Europe. As a child, I vent to a couple of them with my dad. Super cool to see the different types of cars. Usually they’d also have American vintage cars. I think they called them floaters, bc they looked like they “floated” when driving down the road.

Love the old Escort at 5:54, the first car my family got in Australia in 1970 was that shape Escort (but 4 door automatic) and I learned to drive in it. The Galaxie looked rather out of place.

That Mitsubishi had lancer written up the side. But I'm pretty sure it was branded as a Starion in Australia. They made a 4 door and a 2 door.

The "Little Blue" that we see in still image in presentation of your video and at 01:35 is a Renault 8 Gordini, mythical French car of the 60s. R8 won the Rally of Morocco, the Rally of Macao, the 24 hours of Spa-Francorchamps between 1966 and 1969 and the "Corsica Tour" three times, as well as multiple rallies outside of the WRC.

That first one is, as mentioned by Lynott Parris below/above, an Alpine 110, Alpine is a sports car maker, but became part of the Renault group. The 110 is rear (Renault 4cyl) engined, fibreglass bodied, and has a top reputation in the rally world. They made a later model as well, which I think was more mid/rear engine. Later cars, you may not have recognised, not necessarily in order, include my fave, a Mk1 Ford Escort (5:54), (I've owned 2 in the past) a Renault 8 Gordini preceded by n NSU Prinz (I think), and I think that was a Fiat Strada following the Quattro, Ford Galaxy (?), Ferrari 308, Alfa Romeo GTV (badge on rear quarter), Alfa 75 (made in '85 😕), Mercedes SL350 (or 450?), MG B at 5:24, Lancia 1300/Fulvia, Renault 5 (Gordini?), good fun!

There was no R5 Gordini. But there was an R5 Alpine (93hp) launched in 1976. An R5 Turbo (I and II) and there was an R5 Alpine Turbo, with 108hp, straight from the factory. And these cars offered an excellent platform to tease out even more performance...
@@melchiorvonsternberg844 There was a Renault 5 Gordini, it was UK spec RHD, elsewhere it was named the Alpine. The reason for the name change was a UK manufacturer (Sunbeam) already owned the Alpine model name.

@@melchiorvonsternberg844 My friend bought 1 new in around 1979/80. It was the na model not a turbo, I can't remember anything standing out about the valve covers. A quick search on the renaultsport club forum and I found an article, it shows a picture of the engine with only the wording RENAULT on the valve cover (also a 1979 na model).
I had a ride in a back seat of a Renault Gordini once, insane little motor based on the same chassis as a Renault Alpine if I remember right.

at 06:46 the oragne BMW is a "02" in this era the engine displacement was part of the Model, and put in the first 2 digits, so the 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002 were with 1.5l, 1.6l, 1.8l and 2.0l engines respectively. The cars were built from 1966 through 1977, and it's successor was the 3 Series Model E21, which was introduced in '75. Cheers from Austria.
Ähm, nein... Der 1502, hatte die gleiche Maschine wie ein 1602, jedoch mit einer anderen Vergaserbestückung und ein paar anderen Kleinigkeiten. Er brauchte nur Normalbenzin und war mit seinen 75 PS eine Sparversion, die den Einstieg in die BMW- Welt erleichtern sollte. Und auch dieser 1502 war es, der noch von 1975- 1977 gebaut wurde, parallel zum E 21. Denn alle anderen 02- Modelle, wurden seit der Einführung des E 21, 1975 nicht mehr produziert.

The fundamental is that as you can see here the variety of cars competing is very wide, whereas in todays WRC the cars all look the same with disruptive camouflage paint schemes hiding any subtle differences, the rules are even written to assist this anonymity. If you can recognise the cars you can recognise the heros. Even when foucus was on the ultimate performance as in Group B, the variety was still there and an Audi Quatro Sport could be easily distinguished from a Peugeot 205 T16 and a Metro 6R$ for example, whatever the paint scheme.

The Alpine A110 was available in the US at the time I don't know if it was officially or a private company who imported some from the Mexican plant. A convertible version was made and marketed for the Mexican market only, they are ultra rare.
On a side note the A110 stopped winning when Lancia released the Stratos.

G'day Ian. At 1:36 is a Ford Falcon Sprint from the US around 63 or 64 built. 260 or 289 V8 with lots of lightweight panels.
I understand the Falcon Sprint was fastest on every stage when it ran back then but did not win the rally over small engines Mini Cooper S cars. The rules had a handicap system that took the win off large engines cars
Alfa GTV and 75 are the same frame. Front engine RWD with transaxle Gear with great engines: bialbiero with the best : turbo version and twin spark version. It was équipped with pre VANOS or VTEC système...sort of....and V6 arese also called busso. Wonderful.

The original Golf GTI was a beast of its time - could get em up over 220km/h. just stock. And most I talked to claimed 240km/h was more lioke the actual top speed
Classic Rallying is fun because most "Histo-rallies" are run with the cars meant to meet a certain time, rather than "who's the fastest".
Often you get drivers still going all-out, and then CRAWLING the last few meters to get their average down to the desired area.

When the audi 4x4s came in to rallying the lancia stratos and beta's were the only 2wd's to beat them , the beta's were massively successful but all but gone now. A bad era for Italian steel but a great one for their engineering. Cool reaction mate

You are completely right, I was confusing the stratos with the 037, but I'm sure I read that the first year lancia ran the 037 the team held the beta's back in the last two stages to let the 037 take the overall win which made me think the beta's must've been beating the quatros too. But again you are dead right about the 037.

Some great cars there, not to mention the Escort Mk1 at 6.04. Great cars, worth a small fortune now. Mine cost £14k (in 1993 when I bought it, insured for 50k now)
the green car around 5:25 fwd (#141), I think that is may be an MG (and someone else has mentioned an MG-B below) but I wonder from the sound whether is is a V8 version? I know that there were some produced. It will be a custom hard top I think. Anyway, ghastly car to drive as the wheelbase was too long :-) So says an Abarth owner!

To explain Gordini or TT: rwd with rear engine. Renault was sold in US. We see it cousin Renault 10 in Starsky and Hutch in one episode.

In the late 70's and the early 80's there was teams which used Ferraris because Ferraris are fast and in the 60's don't forget that the 250 GTO was an unbeatable car everywhere (the 250 GTO won the mille miglia and this is a rally)
in the early 80's Ferrari try to create a car to run in group B (the 288 GTO) but the group B was canceled before they could run and Ferrari decided to transform the car into the...F40
