2:40 - Fun Fact, Ian: that "little" Skoda has the mythical 5-cylinder engine and the Quattro transmission swap from an Audi RS3.
3:00 - If you want to know the insane power figures of that Golf you should react to some of Hillclimb Monsters' videos, that car is featured in almost all of them. Their videos usually consist of a top 10 or 15 cars from one class, so you'll know in what place they finished, and they always have lots of information about each car. This is a very good way for you to be acquainted with the vehicles that you're not familiar with, as well as with all the crazy stuff they do in terms of engines and transmissions. Plus, their videos are short and you can watch them without skipping around. In fact, I'm sure you'll be so captivated that you won't even think about doing it. 😀
    4:30 - It's the same Skoda from 2:40! 🙂

European hillclimbs are something else. I used to compete 20 odd years ago and some of the cars were unbelievable. Seeing a deeply tuned supercar, a prototype, a rally car with twice the horsepower or a single-seater formula car going up a mountain road is something absurd. In answer to how fast these hillclimb cars are compared to a street car, the fastest car up the hill in this race averaged 47.65mph. That's a proper prototype race car. The fastest modified street car (the white and blue Mk.2 VW Golf) averaged 42.69mph. Looking at the course map for the event (annoyingly I've not located it on Google Maps, the event website is spectacularly unhelpful in that) I reckon the latest Golf GTi, driven to the limit, might just about average 30-35mph. A realistic average speed driven normally, with traffic, might be about 20mph.

The first Pikes Peak Hill Climb was promoted by Spencer Penrose, who had converted the narrow carriage road into the much wider Pikes Peak Highway.
The first Penrose Trophy was awarded in 1916 to Rea Lentz with a time of 20:55.60. In the same year Floyd Clymer won the motorcycle class with a time of 21:58.41. In 1924 the final Penrose Trophy was awarded to Otto Loesche in his Lexington Special. In the years following, Glen Scultz and Louis Unser shared a rivalry and won the event 12 times between them. In 1929, the popular stock car class was added to the event.

That'll prepare you for what video equipment you might need to upgrade to, how many memory cards and batteries you need and so on. I drove some hillclimbs in Austria and more less all cars have cinter metal clutches and quite above 300hp at least, besides some ultra light old (looking) BMW's, Fords and Opels, up to 8-900 Hp in the winning cars. Wittmann with his Audi S1 told me he had around 1000 and the front wheels were only touching the ground on shiftings. Btw, usually we're using our Ice Rally cars, to do Hill Climbs on a little different setup, but the main attracktion and passion is Ice Rally for most - there are videos fro Austrian Ice Rally -with Skodas of course :)

I can tell you a few times from the Agatha Hill Climb wich is also in Austria and equal to the Rechberg.
This are some typical times for the 2mile long track.
    - old Fiat 500 and Styer Puch ~2:00min
    - Group H Racecars like the VW Polo in this Video ~1:30min
    - GT3 racecars ~1:20min
    - Karl Schlagerl with his VW spoiler monster in this Video 1:10min
    - open wheels and prototype racecar ~1:00min
    - Christian Merlin with his Osella quite under 1:00min. 🤪
Years ago there were also so-called Group G cars. These are completely stock cars without modifications, except safety. This cars takes over 2:00min.
Now you can see how fast fast is.😂
By the way... that meant also that's the fastest cars are driving with an average speed of 120mph over these streets.😎

You were talking about how a normal car does in comparison to a hill climb spec one. I live in northern Italy and I always go to these cool hill climb races, at the Nevegal one for example the record has to be about 2:30 compared to the 7 minutes that google maps tells you for the same route. Me and my friends tried the route flat out during lockdown with several street cars from up to 300hp and we still couldn't get under 4.30 minutes
These races are super fun and the cars are unrestricted so you can find anything, not to mention the crazy sounds of the prototypes, they are so loud that they make your ears hurt bad even at 20 meters of distance.
If you come to Italy hit me up and I'll send you to some of these races!

Car 182 is an Opel Manta B 400 rally car, I had a road version of one of these for several years that I called my £36 car. Every part I ever had to replace, headlight, doorskin, part exhaust, brake pads, all cost £36 for some reason. Great, good looking car

I watch hill climb videos al the time, the variety is great, old and new cars, and there are almost no rules in the unlimited class.
So the wildest creations can be seen, and the most important is that it is all done without the multi million dollar budgets of NASCAR or F1.
The sound of the cars often is heavenly, like the Skoda Fabia R5 with that 5 cylinder Audi engine or the Porsche 997 GT3, but a screaming NA 4 cylinder at 10.000rpm does it as well.
The Lancer Evos in the video has 860hp from a 2,2 liter 4 cylinder engine, but also the NA cars reach stupid power figures of up to 180hp per liter, indeed some of the 2 liter NA cars have 360hp!

Interesting to find your reaction to a hill climb near where I live. I just thought to myself, I've already driven my car on this road myself. Where is that? Then I saw where it is. I'm not a fan of it, because the noise in nature is so huge and disturbing ... For the animals in the forest, this is pure stress. But as always, people don't care. There are always two sides to everything.
