    Imagine the outer worldly joy the cadets at the air academy felt in the 40s when they were told they were selected for fighter pilot training and would soon fly the famous Mustang. But it was probably the same in Germany, flying the 109 and 190, and in RAF flying the Spitfire.

    Imagine flying a P51 for a bomber escort mission on a cold day deep into the heart of Germany. You've been flying for two to three hours from your base in England with a giant 12 cylinder merlin engine roaring in front of you and a nothing but a bubble canopy and thin sheet metal between you and -55F at 20,000 feet. THREE HOURS of that had to be exhausting, then topped by a sudden furball of planes everywhere in the sky shooting at each other. If you survived the dogfighting, when your fuel got low it was two to three hours of the same thing back to England again. Amazing...

    • @flylooper
      @flylooper 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That begs question: How did those pilots on such long sorties handle having to pee? Did they use catheters in those days? The other thing is the noise level. That had to be horrible on the ears. Tinnitis anyone?

    • @ad356
      @ad356 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alex Stockl i have to say they are both best of piston engined fighter aircraft technology. the merlin is an amazing engine that powered not only the P51 but the spitfire and lancaster as well as others. both legneds in their own right. the spitfire was the "hero" of the battle of britain. that single aircraft stopped hitler's lLuftwaffedead in its tracks despite numericial advantage of the german air force. mustang and spitfire are probably equal in ever aspect except for the mustang's vastly superior range, which i never really understood as they were powered by virtually the same engine which would probably produce the same fuel economy in both types of aircraft. did the mustang just have larger fuel tanks?

    • @stingercj7
      @stingercj7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +andrew donohue I believe the difference was the P51 had drop fuel tanks which greatly increased range.
