    Apparently the Gripen is designed to be able to take off and land on short airstrips or highways, so if need be in an emergency a gripen squadron can land and refuel at a small airport such as Wonderboom, Kimberley or Upington to refuel.

    First of all stealth does not make the aircraft invisible... it only makes the object appear smaller on the radar and no matter how small it may appear if the object is approaching at mach speed what do you think the enemy will do? Therefore besides the gimmicky stealth capability Gripen NG is one of the best Jet any Country can procure to protect it's airspace.

    Hi mate, being a S. African and a military aviation enthusiast I can answer your question. Though we rate the Gripen as a highly advance and very capable combat aircraft, I personally believe we should have bought Mirage 2000`s, simply becasue we have lots of experience in flying Mirage III`s, Mirage F1`s and Cheetahs (our own upgrade of MirIII). Ground crews and pilots had more experience in the French planes. That being said, Gripen is awesome, but Mirage would have been better suited. Regards

    How does the South African people feel about this aircraft in general? Back in it's own country it's kind of beeing frowned upon. It had a couple of crashes during the testing stage, since all this unstable fly by wire design was new and they had very little experience with it. But people don't understand this and just consider it beeing a crashing piece of junk. No pride of our achievements any more, while all cold war fighters like the J29, J35 and AJ37 became legends during their lifetime. :(

SAAF had exp in operating Delta winged fighters and we had a local infrastructure (and license) to operate, maintain and repair French craft, weapons & engines. Mirage 2000 =$25mil vs Gripen $ 40-60mil cost, means it was also more cost effective. Lastly, we have no support contract with Gripen... I'm not an expert ... but I follow news about fighters in the specialized press. Brazil opted for the purchase of 36 Gripen NG to be an advanced combat aircraft with excellent embedded technology and an arsenal of weapons respectable. So it's a great fighter. It may be that there are more powerful fighters, but the story is simple, each nation buys what they can afford and that provides better technology at a more affordable price. In this context, it is what matters !! The rest comes with training...

      It's not only about being economic, its about how strong the plane is, the gripen loses only a little agility in when stocked up on ammo and bombs, compared to other aircraft that's a damn little to lose put on

    Interesting. This video only got recommended to me today. Although this was already uploaded 11 years ago...
    And being a South African, the unfortunate yet very typical and relevant question popped into my head: How many, out of the original 26 gripens that where bought, are still air worthy today? Could we ward off an attack by any of our neighbors or worse yet, Terrorist cells within our borders?
    I mean, these jets are not the freshest anymore. They where delivered between 2008 and 2012. Let's say, the youngest of these jets is at least 12 years old already. Sure, IF they are being cared for and maintained and upgraded as they should, they should be able to go a long way still. But who knows if this has been done?
    I remember a time (+/- 10 years ago) when we would see two to three groups of gripens in formation, flying circles over the capital. I think the last time I saw, only a lone gripen, over our skies, was more than a year ago. Where are the others? Has the last one also died now?
    Our defense force really has become a sad state, thanks to gross mismanagement and neglect at the highest levels.

      I'd rather our government make sure that school kids from very poor households get breakfast and lunch served to them than have pilots rip around the sky in Gripens. I think a country with healthy and productive future citizens is more important than having larny military hardware.

    @Anchelm44 The cheetah is not a Mirage3 upgrade, It is a virtual clone of the Israeli Kfir fighter. The Kfir itself is also not a MIII upgrade - it's based on it, and came into existence as a result of an embargo against Israel by the French. In other words, A Cheetah ( and it's Kfir Relative) are not Mirage 3's, they are just inspired by it.

    • @doc7000
      @doc7000 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Israel took some of their mirage III and with data from other Mirage operator air forces altered the Mirage III with the American J79 jet engine to make a jet that they can produce locally. This isn't just "inspired" as the planes were essentially modified Mirage III jets, so to call the Kfir fighter a upgraded Mirage III would be an accurate description of the plane. Though the Mirage III was more meant as a interceptor, the Israeli version really came into its own during the 1973 war.

    @Codie Morgan, you are in part correct and Anchelm44 as well. Israel and RSA both decided to upgrade their F3's and yes RSA 'stole' the wings and canards from the Kfir, but as for the rest, they are two completely different aircraft. Been SA, I would love to say the Cheetah is better then the Kfir, but having not flown either, guess I can't say anything. Anchelm does make some good points though. I as an RSA aviation trained fanatic also agree SA should of gone the Mirage route, but they were not prepared to buy every member in parliament a ML merc to win the contract and guess who won in the now beautiful corrupt RSA? I have watched Blokkies do many an airshow (and sorry Blokkies) and yet the Grippen has not impressed me. Maybe in a combat situation it will outshine a Cheetah with modern international electronics, but guess I believe in old school RSA with Kentron and Aerosud technology

    Even though it has crashed the least of all modern fighters, especially during development...
    All incidents since the two famous crashes have been caused by either pilot error or malfunctioning equipment not part of the actual aircraft (like the ejection seat).

    • @Biggerbadwolf
      @Biggerbadwolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of those crashes were during the development stage and were down to buggy software. Bet they spent way less than on the F35 which can also pull 9Gs, but NOT SUSTAINED! It loses airspeed in tight turns.

Give me two divisions of those marvellous fighting Boers (Meaning Farmer, originating from the Boer War) and I will remove Germany from the face of the earth." Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery, Commander of the Allled forces during WWII.
      "The Americans fight for a free world, the English mostly for honour and glory and medals, the French and Canadians decide too late that they have to participate. The Italians are too scared to fight; the Russians have no choice. The Germans for the Fatherland. The Boers? Those sons of bitches fight for the hell of it." American General, George "Guts and Glory" Patton
      "Take a community of Dutchmen of the type of those who defended themselves for fifty years against all the power of Spain at a time when Spain was the greatest power in the world. Intermix with them a strain of those inflexible French Huguenots, who gave up their name and left their country forever at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The product must obviously be one of the most rugged, virile, unconquerable races ever seen upon the face of the earth. Take these formidable people and train them for seven generations in constant warfare against savage men and ferocious beasts, in circumstances in which no weakling could survive; place them so that they acquire skill with weapons and in horsemanship, give them a country which is eminently suited to the tactics of the huntsman, the marksman and the rider. Then, finally, put a fine temper upon their military qualities by a dour fatalistic Old Testament religion and an ardent and consuming patriotism. Combine all these qualities and all these impulses in one individual and you have the modern Boer." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

My whole point was that me (as well as alot of other senior SAAF officers) would have preferred the Mirage2000 for a logical replacement.
