Out: Horvat, Boeser. (Replace with Podkolzin and Hoglander).
Return: Dmen only. Prospects or players.
Build the team around Demko + dcore.
OPTIONAL: Hughes to NJD (he deserves to play in the playoffs with his brothers. His talent wasted here is a crime.) For one of their high value forwards.

I'm not surprised at all. Both Green and Benning was high on internal competition and how it's a good thing if every player is fighting for a spot. I guess that mindset sits in the walls. This mindset is totally opposite to what Boston is doing. Bruins have zero tolerance over locker room attics. Everybody in the team supports each other. Then they are total ass holes to anyone outside the team... Boston is not only the top team in the league, it's probably the only that hasn't made a rebuild in recent times.

NOt impressed in the slightest with this management group. Talk and talk but little actually being said. And the way old father time JR is treating Bruce is borderline criminal. There are serious issues with this org at the moment, and JR seems too linked with Pittsburgh to know he's not there anymore. Bringing in the Canucks current GM, who had never held a GM position beforehand, and looking at the new possible coach - all coming from the burgh. WTF. His overall arrogance about what he obviously thought was easy when he came here: dumping contracts to free up cap space didn't look good when it wasn't as easy as he thought.
My understanding is he has a 3 year contract and is already 1/3 of the way through that and done sweet fa about cleaning this mess up, except add a thick veneer of toxicity around the team on to it.
And where the hell is PA in all this ... hiding in his hobbit hole? Doesn't seem to be able to do anything meaningful either, except do the publicity stunt of signing Bieksa's one day contract on tv.
I'm a Canucks fan, but fear for the short-mid term future of the club with this management group in place.

I give Rutherford a ton of credit for sitting there through a ream of tough questions. Most fair, some unfair. He and the doctors are right about medical confidentiality (which somehow is moot in the NFL - just different country, or do the players sign off on their confidentiality?). Regarding the bad contracts, Jim Benning was a disaster for the team, but the Mikheyev contract is a puzzler. JT Miller's contract would seem to contradict Rutherford's comment that "our offer on the table is fair by Horvat's performance up to this year, but not this year." This indicates that he doesn't want to pay a player based on a career year. But isn't that exactly what he did with JT Miller? Anyway, TONS of credit for JR sitting through that presser. Love the Canucks.

Also, kept the Sedins until their 40's, no chance of playoff success, while no top draft picks, that's the only reason Nonis had to trade away franchise goalie for Horvat, and why there was never a rebuild. You know after watching this media briefing by JR I am impressed. He knows the inside game of hockey. Pontificators do not know what goes on in managing an NHL team. As a die hard Canucks fan (been with them unequivocally since they entered the NHL) I have ridden the highs and lows of this team. Yes this season has been a bust. There's many elements that contribute to it. But lets give this management team the benefit of time to let their inner experience affect change. Benning has saddled our Canucks with decisions that are long term. Long term contracts that paralyze making the roster changes needed. Recall the Luongo contract that even he said was a ball and chain for him. I long for the days when we signed players to max 3-year contracts and then extended them. Seven plus year contracts do not allow the NHL to see forward movement. Cap space has hampered the league as a whole and it shows in our desire to move some Canuck players. JR admits the number one issue is Cap space to affect positive change in roster/success = wins and making the playoffs. As fans we know it inside us too. What we don't know is what they do on a daily basis to achieve the goals to bring a better roster to the ice. As a fan let's rely less on pontificators and allow patience and belief that things are being done to achieve what we want from this team.

The guy is terrible at building teams for long term success. The Canes did nothing after winning their cup in 05-06, except make one playoff appearance until

@@forgetful3360 Using the French Canadian Rule
For the first five years of the Amateur draft, from 1963 to 1967, the Canadiens never invoked their French Canadian option. In 1968, the Canadiens saw an opportunity and finally made use of their exclusive right for the first time. They selected goaltender Michel Plasse and a centreman from Montreal named Roger Belisle. Plasse played 32 games for the Habs as a backup goalie and was subsequently lost with no compensation in the 1974 Expansion Draft. Roger Belisle never played a game in the NHL.
In 1969, the Canadiens used the French Canadian rule again to select Rejean Houle and Marc Tardif before the other teams drafted in regular order. Although both of these 1969 selections were serviceable NHL’ers, they were hardly the foundation of any future Habs dynasty. Both players were lost to the rival WHA after four seasons with Montreal.
      Au Revoir to the Rule
By 1969, the old sponsorship system had been completely phased out. The NHL voted to eliminate the French Canadian rule, otherwise, the Habs would have been happy to take junior phenom Gilbert Perreault from Victoriaville, Quebec in 1970. Perreault went on to become the foundation of the early Buffalo Sabres’ success.
That’s it. From 1970 forward, the Canadians built their most successful teams the old-fashioned way, through wise trades and diligent draft picks. As the league expanded, the newer teams needed skilled players immediately. Still deeply stocked, the Canadiens could afford to give up serviceable players for future draft picks. Other Original Six teams had the same opportunity, but Habs’ general manager Sam Pollock was the master. That’s how he secured Guy Lafleur and other superstars the Canadiens’ of the 1970s employed while grabbing six more Stanley Cups.

I wouldn’t have resigned Miller, because his tantrums are toxic. We want a team that is emotional but not immature, and let’s face it- his actions are immature. I’d hire Bieksa as a culture coordinator to nurture a healthy team environment, one where guys are having fun winning. Id educate the players on Canucks history so they understand the TEAM they play for - letting Linden walk was symbolic of the death of this teams identity and culture. I’d treat Bruce with respect until his contract is done or he is let go. This means publicly showing him support even when it feels hard. I would NEVER have said (in reference to the after hours interview) that the team had a bad training camp, they had bad habits, they had no superstar and that he didn’t know Bruce’s contract was a 2 year contract. That added an element of insecurity to the team and was so unnecessary and unsupportive. Maybe theres truth to them, but you don’t need to air all that publicly and at such an early point in the season…In terms of players, sending podz and hogs to Abbotsford was the right move. You have to focus on developing these young players. I’d look to trade Boeser and Garland- they’re great players who aren’t thriving here but will probably do great elsewhere. I’d focus on developing Burroughs over Stillman, because of the heart that Burroughs shows- that’s the kind of influence you want in the locker room. I would be very careful in signing players that didn’t work out on their first teams- I would want to know WHY they didn’t work out and make darn sure it’s not because of a toxic personality. Lastly, everything done with 100% respect and class from the top to bottom. Respect, honour, accountability, genuineness, hard work, dedication, discipline and support of each other would be uncompromisable core values. It’s about winning with integrity. Last thing I’ll say- while I don’t agree with everything JR has said or done, I do give him credit for taking responsibility and fielding these tough questions.

A lot of contradictions made by Rutherford. Is that because he's not clear HIMSELF of the direction of the team moving forward? Also, not great optics overall, bringing out medical staff, who can't answer questions. "We do a good job here. Further than that, we're not at liberty to comment." Yeah, thanks for coming.

A guy who gets up there and 1. Says ownership has not interfered at all 2. Says he made mistakes in thinking he would come in and more quickly move contracts, and 3. Who out and out says something around a 2-3 year timeline for his major surgery to realign/rebuild the team. Some answers. Thank you.
That cuts out a lot of the negative hyperbuzz I've been hearing and in which I've participated for the last little while. I will stop my maligning of ownership, for now. Again, thank you Jim. (though, its still gonna be a lot of work to forgive ownership for the 6 purgatorial years that was the Benning era).
