About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

Fun fact: they had to hire a ballet dancer with years of experience to play Mr Mistoffellees cause of how tricky his dance is. His dance is the hardest in the entire musical.
In the opposite side, Laurie Davidson may not good at dancing, because he is not a trained dancer, his audition dance was "awful" and "brazen". But has good magic talents and tricks.

@@ChristHoon 1. His dance is interpretive: he is doing magic tricks to prove tuggers words, which is why they are cheering and acting amazed. 2. Deut is also his dad (it's canon, Jacob Brent has stated so, making Tugger his brother) and all those tricks are to gain the tribes confidence that he CAN bring back his dad.

According to what happened behind the scenes: Laurie had to prepare choreography for his Mistoffelees audition, but because he is not a trained dancer, his audition dance was "awful" and "brazen". However, this is what caught Tom Hooper's attention and influenced what the movie character would become.

Many stage performers thought that Tugger and Misto were lovers and that’s also just a head canon. Plus, Tugger is a Mainecoon and Misto a Tuxedo cat so that doesn’t make much sense

I love the irony of how Rum Tum Tugger’s song is just about how self centered he is and then the following song is just him singing about how great and respectable his dad is and after that one he proceeds to sing about how awesome his boyfriend is for seven minutes.

Someone else pointed this out, and I think the recent movie, among a bunch of other disastrous mistakes, missed entirely the point of the other cats singing for each other. It's basically the only thing keeping all non-Grizzabella cats sympathetic, otherwise it's a bunch of leotard-wearing assholes talking about how great they are. With the exception of Tugger's song, which is in fact about what a disagreeable asshole he is, the prototypical cat we all think of. But he gets his own humanizing moments through his contributions to other songs, casting him more as an irreverent goofball during the Pollicle Battle, and now here where he hypes up Mistofelees as the hero of the show. I've noticed over the years weird editing moments in the 1999 filmed version, but as I grew up I realized the editors and director understood it was equally important for the audience to see close-ups of the other cats' reactions and interactions, as it was to show off the amazing choreography. The words of the songs don't tell a fully clear story, a lot of pieces are filled in and different relationships implied through the way the cats interact in the backgrounds of the solo numbers
Rum Tum Tugger, a cat so full of himself, is singing Mr. Mistoffelees' praises here and it's awesome
Like also does when introducing Old Deuteronomy. So Tugger is cocky and show offish but he is at least respectful

My personal headcanon: Mistoffeles and Tugger are a couple, but Tugger likes to tease the females because it is funny to him, and Mistoffeles calls him a 'terrible bore' in the RTT song because he doesn't want any of the girls to fawn over his man.

However, it becomes an issue when you take from the original source material and then twist it to fit whatever requirements that would make the film be deemed "safe" to the point where it doesn't make any lick of sense.

If you wanted to make something that is "all new", you would take from the original source material and then put your own, unique spin on it.
(For example, Pixar's 'A Bug's Life' is based of the Japanese film 'The 7 Samurai'.)
Here, they copied all the songs, made the characters look like nightmare fuel, added some painfully unnecessary comic relief, and added a "villan" in order to add conflict, all of which didn't work.
Same issue with Disney's 'The Lion King' (2019). If you've already watched the original 1994 movie, don't even bother with the new one. 90% of the original was just copied word for word only now with dull, ugly looking CGI.

And guess what? It's one if the reasons that changed the perspective of this musical, and what made me stand up for it when the movie version was brought up being ridiculed.

I’m not saying that they ARE gay in this (though I do ship it), but the movie remake and this movie are NOT AT ALL the same, and I feel kind of... I dunno... weird feeling... that you can’t see that right off the bat. I’m sorry if I’m sounding offensive, but I will stand by this for any amount of time before I take a step towards the remake. And those ship comments existing in the first place can be contradictory but you can do the same and just make a comment about how you prefer the relationship and character in the movie than the musical, and hope someone sees it to form a discussion like the rest of us.

So many people are talking about Tugger and Misto, but no one is talking about Demeter and Munkustrap in the beginning and how they’re basically cuddling for the rest of the number. They’re so cute!
I live for the scene with Demeter and Munkustrap at the beginning - she was just nearly kidnapped by Macavity, he just lost the fight and is probably blaming himself for not being able to protect Old Deuteronomy, and now they're cheering each other up.
Don't get me wrong, I love Rum Tum Tugger with Mr Mistoffelees, but Demeter and Munkustrap is my favourite ship in the entire show

They're brothers and Mistofolees is slightly jealous of Tugger. Old Deuteronomy is their father and the father or grandfather of some of the others.
Burt Gummerfan - The actual family tree for the Jellicles isn't confirmed. What is confirmed, however, is that Munkustrap and Tugger are brothers and sons of Old Deuteronomy. The relationships between the cats is up for your own interpretation. I personally believe that Misto and Victoria are siblings and Bustopher Jones is their uncle, making an unnamed queen their mother.
Hayes last I checked, Macavity is also related to Munkustrap and RTT, but I don't remember how(Perhaps the evil uncle, heh)

They made him shy and nervous but still wearing the sparkliest extraist outfit and they split this song between the obvious love interest and his supposed rival. Are we SURE they made him or the song straight?

For real thoooo, however I dont think Jason Derulo could pull off a song like this, and it was kinda cool what they did with Mr. Mistopholees's character, excluding his romance.
I don't see any problem with that. Isnt cats supposed to be interpretative? The people who did the movie preferred one ship. And honestly, I thought it was well done in the context of the movie, with Victoria as an outsider seeing beyond what a jellicle usually would. Besides, I'm not particularly a fan of Derulo as Tugger but given that I genuinely hate Tugger's number in this version of the play... i'd take it. I do wish they had kept Tugger's involvement in Misto's song though, I don't ship these two (nor... anyone really, except mayyyybe for demeter and munkustrap), but it would have been nice for tugger to show that he genuinely appreciates and respects Misto when he was feeling down in the movie.

In some versions Mistoffelees does sing the final verse but I like how the Rum Tum Tugger Praises him. It's as if Mistoffelees is so shy he can't even boast about himself like the other cats do. Just a little detail I've always noticed :)

@@ThePeaceofWildThings Their bodies are real, but there were NO cat costumes or makeup involved as a base for the CGI-- so the colors, cat markings, etc.. everything that makes them cat-people, is CGI'd, so it looks odd. People also say that the actors weren't the actual dancers and they just CGI'd their faces onto the dancers which is why they look so wonky... not sure about that, but something definitely went wrong there. It just looks.... off.

This is the best version of this song in existence. No one else gives it the same energy and personality. I was pretty sad that Tugger didn’t perform it in the new movie. He sang it himself for the most part which is weird... because it just sounds like bragging at that point 😂
I read Mistoffelees is suppose to sing with Tugger but if the actor vocals aren't strong enough Tugger will sing it for him . That because Mistoffelees role is a principal dancer just like his counterpart victoria. Originally victoria and Jemima was suppose to be the same cat but they couldn't find a actress who could do both singing and dancing so they split it to two cats .

I think it worked as him trying to psych himself.
