There will NEVER be another Grizabella like Elaine Paige's. Jennifer Hudson is ok but she can't hold a candle to Elaine's talent. There isn't a time I listen to her singing Memory that I don't get chills. She's absolutely amazing.

Instead of making an overpriced feature film, the artistic merits of which have been called into serious question, why didn't they just wide-release the video of the original (well, near enough to the original) stage production on the large screen worldwide. This musical is NOT about star names like Dame Judi and Sir Ian, no matter how talented but about an ensemble of acting-singing dancers, some of whom are given featured moments.
@@Tempest7575 And milking the property for every penny they can squeeze out of it! There are multiple versions on TH-cam FOR FREE! People are way overreacting about the movie. Yes they look weird. It's Cats. It has always looked weird, it's just different. This version isn't going anywhere.
As a person who cant read music or even hear the difference between harmonies watching Andrew nit pick and find the issues of his music is so beautiful to see. When someone KNOWS their craft inside out its so inspiring.
I've loved "Cats" my whole life. My first memory is watching the VHS when I was two years old. It's the reason I love musical theatre. I wanted to like the 2019 version so badly, but it was such a let down.
Oh yes I remember being full of awe every time her gorgeous face and huge eyes came up on screen, especially alongside her angelic voice. Even as a kid I adored her.

Elaine makes me cry within two notes.. god it’s breathtaking when creativity competently takes risk and puts art and emotion first. When dollar is a lucky reward, earned upon exhaustion, and not the engine. Sad to see where entertainment is right now in 2019 by comparison. Innovators and artists suffocated by computer files and shareholders. I hope that ends soon...
I wish the movie had the lovely costumes ,makeup and character of the stage production. I loved Cats now its a freak show with Grizabellas snot streaming from her nose like a rabid werewolf
@@chrisdevene9158 Elaine Page didn't cry at all, or least not in any performance I've seen, most likely because crying with a full face of stage makeup's not the best idea however resitant to sweat it may be. Plus Elaine's version is usually more hopeful, still clinging to her pride and didn't really break down till her last verse. Jennifer's was already broken and despairing the first time she sings memory. Most people don't pretty cry even when they're only a little upset never mind completely broken up, so no, it's not ham acting, it's exactly the opposite. Ham acting would have been making all the faces to seem distraught WITHOUT also giving the ugly reality of what distraught looks like. If anything, she can be accused of putting too much weight on the acting and letting it impair her singing, but not that the acting itself was unrealistic, as no one sounds, or looks, their best when sobbing their heart out.
@@chrisdevene9158 Yes, very light, with it's overarching themes of mortality and lost youth. Even regardless of that, even if the show as a whole were truly the empty, random spectacle that it's been accused of being, that's never applied to Grizabella and "Memory".
I hope that it's still around, it would be amazing to see along with uncut/full dance numbers. Maybe in the distant future on an anniversary edition or something? We can dream till then!
news from the future: we DID finally, finally get the cut footage of Jacob Brent doing the Conjuring Turn released onto the internet. Poor dude, they had him to it seven times in a row to get it shot and then cut it.
What an exquisite, one of a kind musical. So much work and talent involved here. It’s a shame those incredible singers/dancers/actors are not the superstars they’d deserve to be. Althought, I’m slightly obsessed with Michael Gruber now.
I would have lost my shit if I'd seen this as an obsessed 11 year old... Only now at the ripe age of 32 do I think I can handle it with any composure and it still made me emotional at times...
Omg, my mom had this on VHS and then later on DVD. When I was 9-10 years old, I was OBSESSED with this adaptation. I loved every single character (especially the white cat, the pretty cat that sings with Grisabella, and Mungojerry and Rumpleteaser). I think this is a major reason why I got into theater and dance so much in my life. Love always! 💘
11:25 - Veerle Casteleyn is quite possibly THE cutest girl alive ! I mean, her cute tender little face. tiny physique and generally endearing charm; I LOVE HER TO BITS !
She was truly wonderful in that role. I was a bit late discovering this wonderful film, although I saw the stage production in 1982 and loved it, but my first thought when I spotted Veerle, was "My God, she looks like Lucy," a cat of mine who still, at the age of 11, lives up to her nickname of "Kittenface."
I’ve seen em all. But this imho is the greatest live musical ever. It always makes me laugh and cry. And I see it. On stage and on film whenever possible. Absolutely marvellous. The box set of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals is my greatest treasure.
I watched this to get insights primarily from the cast. Was NOT disappointed. Plus Jo Gibb is so absolutely easy on the eyes. Cheers! Epic musical...so grateful this film version was produced and released...
My Mother has the poetry book this is based on, I love poetry(I write it as well) and always wanted it. One day at work they had thrown out some items and a few books and I found a copy of the book in the garbage, it wasn't soiled, so now I have my own.
At 25:10 you can see that they just finished the Jenny Anydots number and afterwards they almost immediately collapse. Poor Michael Gruber looks so tired. Doing this live for 3 hours most be rally hard.
When it comes to 'actual' movie adaptations, the director has basically full control over the vision. Weber might be asked for some advice or suggestion, but he's already agreed to give the rights over, and the director hired by the production studio calls the final shots. Weber just sits back and collects the checks. I doubt if he'd been given full control, for instance, Weber would've been that happy about Gerard Butler's singing, lol.
I'm still eternally upset that I can't find the full version of Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer anywhere. They play some verses in here that aren't in the final version, so I know the whole thing was filmed, but it doesn't seem to be available properly anywhere :(
@@AAW1986WWE Sorry, I think you misunderstood- a few songs (including this one) were shortened for the 1998 film. If you look on the Cats wiki, there's an entire extra verse that was cut from the song but is still done on stage. Around 22:30 in this video they're singing "If the drawers are pulled out from the bedroom chests, And you can't find one of your winter vests", but that line isn't in the final version. That means they filmed it (unlike Growltiger's Last Stand, which I don't think they ever did in the first place), but then cut it out before release, so all I can hope is that one day they release a full uncut version of the song. Sorry for the confusion, and thank you for trying to help!
I saw the musical the first time when i was 4 years old, performed in Hamburg. I never forgot about it. When i was like 6 years old i dressed up as Rumpleteazer, my mom worked hours on my costume, colored the suit and made the wig and cuffs herself. I listened to the soundtrack so often... when i was 15 i saw the musical again when it toured around. We had the official Film Vesion on video and i watched it every year. It broke one day and i remember crying a lot. I finally got it on DVD and i watch it still. I love the songs and the musical.. its magical for me. I always feel like back when i first saw it performed. I was flashed and i will forever love this. :) ♥
This is a lesson is adaptation and also filming a production all in one. Wish more shows did this, because 22 years later this version they created still stands up against almost all film versions of shows as being the best one.
It’s so funny to hear the choreographer say: “I don’t want to see our work on a video and say, wow I could have done much better”. Obviously this was not the mindset of the director of Cats film 2019. I think some, only some, Broadway shows shouldn’t be made into a film because some of the magic is lost along the way. Love Cats!
12:20 don't worry, they did so well that not even a modern movie could even hope to compete Putting aside the visuals of new movie, what I really missed was the small hints and interactions between the characters. Every person here knew their character and that characters role and relations to other characters and acted it out in different ways. Munkustap is the protector and you can clearly see it, Mungojerry and Rumpleteaser are mischievous and trouble makers and full of energy. I can continue on and on, but point is you can see it and feel it. I just feel like the new movie kinda missed the point. You just don't feel it as much. They could have done so much more and better in the new movie.
I may be biased, because I grew up watching this version all the time, but I've also heard the broadway recordings and seen a few clips of recent productions of it and this is still the best cast, in my opinion.
I really, really, really want to know what the explanation for the stage directions were for this. Like, Tugger just sort of appears out of nowhere doing his Rum Tum Tugger Stance, and Mistoffeeles basically runs right into him and looks up--this was actually staged!
8:47 I don't know the first thing about music or anything like that, and it tears my brain to shreds wondering how anyone can just even come up with a simple melody let alone an entire musical. He's losing his shit over who know what here, but it sounds fine to me.
I love love love this. I wish I could buy up every single piece of BTS footage for this production of Cats. I see the little extra bits like Mungojerrie singing about the missing pearls or Jemima sliding in between Munkustrap's feet and I wish they could release a package with all the video from the making.... ~wistful sigh~ I just love seeing the cast in full costume smiling big and laughing.

Toddles they turned him into a street rapper cat
My sisters and I loved this film, in fact our family cat (who lived to be 20 years old) was named Grizabella
I remember growing up I'd go around fitting each of my cats to one of the jellicle cats
Mst3kfanatic1 we have a grizabella cat, who's name is Phoebe. She's an older cat and she looks just like Grizabella. The other cats shun her too.
I had a cat named bustifer Jones 😂
There was a cat outside of a theatre that I perform in and if the cat looked like gus the theatre cat, I would’ve named them that. But the cat was a pure white cat so I named them Victoria. I know the cat belongs to someone but the cat always hangs out at the theatre and I saw the cat on a day I was performing
Man Webber is strict. But I'm glad he is cause he came out with some great work!
If people aren't strict, then Cats may end up being a crappy movie. Give the guy a break. He just wanted the movie 2 turn out.
Along with what the others have said. He's also strict because he loves what he does, and it's his profession. The energy, blood, sweat, tears and efforts of everyone proves that Andrew has put so much into his work because its his passionate profession.
Brittany Martin hey.......... guess what just came out..........
@@rachaelreynolds-soucie7590 it's so sad... the remake absolutely butchered what the cast put so much work into... cats won't be the same wonderful experience for this new generation of theater lovers.
"strict"? What does that actually mean in a world of professionals with a leader that's a master of his craft and who is responsible for one of the most important aspects?
Hearing him say that Disney was denied right to make cats because they didnt want it to be turned into cartoon cats ....... Someones pissed about what's been done in 2019
It’s not a cartoon. They wouldn’t be pissed.
Disney making Cats into a proper animation would probably have worked out a lot better than what we've got ;-;
TheArtsyHollow exactly omg like i would trust disney so much more
Actually Stephen Spielberg wanted almost got a Cats project off the ground, he did some incredible concept art for it, but it was denied by TS Elliot’s estate
@@witchyflowerchild7201 Do they not realize what they've done?!
I adore this musical so much and I just love all the actors, i wish there was more behind the scenes, more of them rehearsing out of costumes, they did so amazing, the entire cast a crew
I feel the same. I absolutely Love Rosemarie ford as bombalurina!! I wish she did an interview for this!!
I watched Tyler's Vlog when they did the revival, its very interesting to watch, Tyler is Rum Tum Tugger, his Vlog is called "whats new pussycat" you can find it on here and it has a lot of content
I, at two years old, asked my parents to buy this for me after seeing the trailer for it on a Barney VHS tape. I still watch it multiple times a year, and attribute my love of musical theatre to it.
BROOOOO I HAD THE SAME BARNIE MOVIE THATS WHAT INTRODUCED ME TO CATS TOO!!! I HONESTLY THOUGHT THE BARNIE ASSOCIATION IN MY MIND WAS WRONG, I WAS LIKE “NO IT COULDNT HAVW BEEN A TRAILER ON A BARNIE MOVIE”
jonathan joestar HAHAHA OMG! Glad I’m not the only one! That Barney movie was like a fever dream, so I’m not surprised you questioned yourself. It’s the one with the egg lmao
Annie Center mAn now I gotta go find it and watch it again, I feel like I remember it being super bad
jonathan joestar dude it’s wild. They’re supposed to like hatch this magical rainbow egg, but they keep losing it and having to chase after it. It gets stuck in like a mail truck and a bird sanctuary and a hot air balloon and a restaurant
@@anniecenter Do you mean Barney's Great Adventure?
I woke up with Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat in my head somehow. Not complaining. It just came to me today. So, here I am.
Same here, but with Mungjerrie and Rumpleteazer.
Same but with Mr Mistoffelees
and he worked as a table for Victoria and Plato orgy scene lol. I used to think of him as just the fun uncle but that face is like idk how to feel.
Wish they mentioned skimble more in this, i’d like to know what went on behind the scenes of his song
This musical is my everything...ever since I was a little kid and still remains that now...Mr.Mistoffelees has and always will be my absolute favorite in the musical and Jacob Brent playing as him in the movie was amazing...best choice of actor to play him
Right? I kinda want to have his kittens.
Ben Tyrell (UK last night of the first life cast) was phenomenal, as was James Davies (an understudy from way back in the 90s)

“If you could give me any cat thing I would be very grateful, any cat movement”
Why is that so precious
Who else is in love with the transition from actor to cat during the interviews?
Man,as a dancer,I have to give props to the coreography,Gillian Lynne did a very good job rehearsing them 👏🏻
The only cats movie allowed
when i was a kid, my grandma took me to the library and they were giving away old books and vhs tapes. i found a cats double feature tape set with the movie and the behind the scenes. i didn’t even know what cats was, i just liked actual cats and thought the cover looked cool, read the back and thought “sure”. that day changed my life and i’m not being dramatic. i would watch the musical every night, and then pop in the behind the scenes tape to fall asleep to. it ignited my love for theater and to this day is still my favorite musical of all time. i’m so glad some people still remember this version, and not the monstrosity that came out recently
Let's ignore the weird demon hum-ats and focus on the good cats
There will NEVER be another Grizabella like Elaine Paige's. Jennifer Hudson is ok but she can't hold a candle to Elaine's talent. There isn't a time I listen to her singing Memory that I don't get chills. She's absolutely amazing.
I love so much Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley as Grizabella
I know the part was made for Judy Dench. I wander how would´ve been her Grizabella. I love Elaine Paige´s tho...
She makes me cry everytime I listening to her singing that song.
Jemima sings it better!
This cast is just perfect
This is without out doubt the best incarnation of Munkustrap.
She salty about that draining board
That part made me laugh a lot. Like just imagine being really pissed off and having a rant about your job and then it's immortalized forever.
Did she ever get it? The people want to know!
She’s cleaning multiple leotards by hand per day, she’s right to be salty tbh
21:50 ok why do Jo Gibb and Drew Varley have such amazing chemistry tho
They were on West End together so really knew eachother. These rolls are cast because of their chemistry.
@@user-gy8co5qy2z Where are you from? I can understand every word and I love her accent!
@@downtown82 Me too and I'm not even a naitive English speaker, these actors have very good diction, musical actors (at least the ones I've seen either on screen or stage) usually do.
This musical had the best cast ver and i couldn't imagine it with any body else replaced 😁
owo :3 wait until December :( :(
Yeah . . .
Man do I have some news for you
Rum Tum Tugger FTW. John Partridge was the best one.
_“He [Andrew Lloyd Webber] has an uncanny knack of walking in and putting his finger on the problem. Annoyingly so...you may well have sat here sat here for a couple hours trying to work out why things aren't going the right way. And he'll come in and he'll say "What's the problem" and you tell him and he'll put his finger straight on it.”_
Yeah. He's a genius. That's what geniuses do.
I believe that is from the Behind the Scenes of the Cats 1998 video.
But he also made Love never dies😂😂😂
*whisper* He is also a plagiarizer..... (I love his musicals don’t get me wrong. But it’s true)
@@elisagomez1297
He's a bit of an arsehole in general but I do love his work.
Yes!!! I think what they're trying to do is reintroduce cats to a younger audience who may not know about it.
@@Tempest7575 And milking the property for every penny they can squeeze out of it! There are multiple versions on TH-cam FOR FREE! The movie, which was released MONTHS ago, got slammed by the critics and probably died at the box office. I DON'T go out to the local cinema anymore and haven't done in more than a decade. Admission prices are nearly $20, the popcorn and Raisinettes, soda, etc. come to another $20. People bring their squalling infants and screaming toddlers instead of leaving them home with grandma and let them run up and down the aisles disturbing the rest of the audience members!
@@robertd.carver6240 What do you mean the movie was released months ago? It just came out
Ironically, Dame Judi was originally cast as Grizabella in the West End production but got injured in rehearsal and was only then replaced by Elaine Paige.

Who here after the trailer dropped and is just crying
I am and I do like the 1998 video film version of Cats and I have got it on DVD and Blu-Ray as for the 2019 film version well not so much
Honestly, I'm excited. The '98 movie will always be "My Cats" it will never leave that place in my heart, ever. To the new movie, I say "Impress me. Let's see what you've got. Bring it on."
When Andrew said Tom wouldn’t want his Cats to be like cartoons I died
This movie was my only contact with Cats so far. First on cable and then with the DVD. I love it!
"glorious rubbish dump" is the funniest description of this musical I've ever heard and it came straight from the creator, I love it
I've loved "Cats" my whole life. My first memory is watching the VHS when I was two years old. It's the reason I love musical theatre. I wanted to like the 2019 version so badly, but it was such a let down.
Best movie ever I love Jo Gibb's accent.
U gotta love her smooth & sweet face 2.
@@brittanymartin6122 Exactly, she's so adorable.
11:18 I just love that she took the time to even mention Veerle's name. She was the most beautiful cat in this production.

The ultimate Cats. Not that 2019... thing.
even a girl who played Victoria on stage hated it
Jacob Brent singing 'Mr. Mistoffelees' with the rest of the cast in the recording studio kinda f*cks me up a little bit. Knowing that his voice is most likely mixed in with his own song that he DOESN'T SING in the movie is just...whoa.
Jo Gibb said it. This is the definitive CATS movie. Nothing can even come close to it.
I just adore this cast. When my daughter was little, we wore the DVD out. Watchong this is bringing back a good...memory.
"She's saying 'the man was wonderful when he made love to me but i hated him'"
....so basically every Kate Bush video
manifestgtr She’s talking to Demeter’s actress about Demeter’s relationship with Macavity
No. I think she was talking about how the choreography is supposed 2 b like.
Brittany Martin there is a head canon that Demeter and macavity we’re lovers/mates. Macavity was abusive to Demeter, so she left, but she is scared of him still. The choro is supposed to demonstrate the fear, hate, or love that bombalurina and demeter have for macavity.
@@emma-tw6gi I always had the theory that Bombalurina is more Macavity`s sibling (she`s red too) than mate, and she has the "sister-in-law" love for Demeter, that`s why she wants to protect her...

This 1998 Version is just so well done!
I wish the movie had the lovely costumes ,makeup and character of the stage production. I loved Cats now its a freak show with Grizabellas snot streaming from her nose like a rabid werewolf
That's what happens when people really cry, you're objecting to her acting well.
@@mousinge Not for that part ! Elaine Page didn't snot ,Its ham acting
@@mousinge you do know it was a light musical about cats?
@@chrisdevene9158 Yes, very light, with it's overarching themes of mortality and lost youth. Even regardless of that, even if the show as a whole were truly the empty, random spectacle that it's been accused of being, that's never applied to Grizabella and "Memory".
I feel like they got so so much more footage than they included in this. Wonder if that footage still exists and if we'll ever see it.
I hope that it's still around, it would be amazing to see along with uncut/full dance numbers. Maybe in the distant future on an anniversary edition or something? We can dream till then!
Right??? WE need full version of their rehearsals. even if it was hours, them failing and learning. i would definitely watch it.

Yasss! Another Wicked fan!!
What an exquisite, one of a kind musical. So much work and talent involved here. It’s a shame those incredible singers/dancers/actors are not the superstars they’d deserve to be. Althought, I’m slightly obsessed with Michael Gruber now.
this is still the definitive film of "CATS"!
We NEED the full 1998 Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer on Spotify
Totally agree!!
I would have lost my shit if I'd seen this as an obsessed 11 year old... Only now at the ripe age of 32 do I think I can handle it with any composure and it still made me emotional at times...
I love Cats. This is by far my favourite production.

this was my first and fave musical i had ever seen!! i love cats the musical!!!
Sketchy Wolf same!
I do like Cats The Musical
Omg, my mom had this on VHS and then later on DVD. When I was 9-10 years old, I was OBSESSED with this adaptation. I loved every single character (especially the white cat, the pretty cat that sings with Grisabella, and Mungojerry and Rumpleteaser). I think this is a major reason why I got into theater and dance so much in my life. Love always! 💘
Victoria(the white cat) Jemima (the cat that sings with grizabella)
11:25 - Veerle Casteleyn is quite possibly THE cutest girl alive ! I mean, her cute tender little face. tiny physique and generally endearing charm; I LOVE HER TO BITS !
That girl is young, sweet, and beautiful as an angel
I remember falling in love with her when I saw this as a kid and to this day she is my fave!!
she is honestly the cutest Jemima I have ever seen
Ever since I was 4 I’ve been obsessed with this film. I’m 20 now and still watch it a few times a month. This film has my whole heart.
One of the Best Musicals in History!
Cats The Musical = Top Cat
Cats 2019 = Cat Litter
I watched this to get insights primarily from the cast. Was NOT disappointed. Plus Jo Gibb is so absolutely easy on the eyes. Cheers! Epic musical...so grateful this film version was produced and released...

At 25:10 you can see that they just finished the Jenny Anydots number and afterwards they almost immediately collapse. Poor Michael Gruber looks so tired. Doing this live for 3 hours most be rally hard.
Now that we are in later life, I wonder if Jo Gibb ended up getting to show her kids this video. And maybe they'll go see the movie this winter!
this is my favorite musical, and I also like phantom of the opera
Ava Speers 😱YES!!

"this is the definitive version of cats" - still holds true today, even with the 2019 movie 😑
This production was just magic... pure and simple. The orchestration, the acting, the dancing, the singing... all just perfect for the show.
Funny that Andrew was so damn picky with this production but let the 2019 abomination go forward as half ass as itwas
He should have never given them permission. It didn’t need to be remade. Greed.
I'm still eternally upset that I can't find the full version of Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer anywhere. They play some verses in here that aren't in the final version, so I know the whole thing was filmed, but it doesn't seem to be available properly anywhere :(
th-cam.com/video/861jN3mKE9Q/w-d-xo.html
Sorry for the confusion, and thank you for trying to help!
there are many clips that aren't released yet, including Behind The Scenes.
I actually heard that they did film Growltiger’s Last Stand, but it had to be cut from the final film for the sake of time.
Love Cats!
I used to put pantyhose on and pretend i was a cat when i was a child because of this movie 😂
I wish there was more scenes with john partridge💔
12:20 don't worry, they did so well that not even a modern movie could even hope to compete
Putting aside the visuals of new movie, what I really missed was the small hints and interactions between the characters.
I love all their explanations of their characters . . and then, they transform into them!
I may be biased, because I grew up watching this version all the time, but I've also heard the broadway recordings and seen a few clips of recent productions of it and this is still the best cast, in my opinion.
I went to see the musical for a birthday once, it was incredible, but I have to agree with you that nothing quite compares to this version.
