Stephen King called Umbridge "the best villain since Hannibal Lecter" and I agree with him. She's wonderfully well written.

Because she's too realistic. If she was a muggle, she would still be the same. Voldemort was dependent on magic, and if he did not made any horcruxes, he would die before you say Avada Kedavra.
While Umbridge could use law her place in the ministry and the law to her own advantage. Umbridge is real and that's why she's so feared and hated.

@Waxplays she would give students unfair detention. Then make them write lines, but what ever they wrote would get scarred onto their hand. She was a awful(I mean the worst if not second worst teacher). Teaching students nothing practical. She emotionally hurt students. That is just a little bit of what she did. Hope this helps.

In the books, I really liked it when Dean stuck up for Remus as Umbridge was insulting him. I actually think she is jealous as Moony is the BEST D.A.D.A teacher the world has seen and Umbridge is literally the WORST.

I mean, a literal death eater was a better DADA teacher than umbridge. Barty crouch jr actually managed to be liked by students and staff posing as moody, and did taught the kids useful things. Heck, he managed to be liked by neville by giving him that herbology book( for ulterior motive, but still), whose parents he helped to torture. That's how bad umbridge was.

Umbridge is just like the lady that says that there is no war in Ba Sing Se, she is in self denial and goes to extreme measures to prove she's in right. Her crime is not being evil, but being ignorant and unwilling to listen. Also, all the blame is on Umbridge, isn't there possibly a small part of the blame on Fudge?
The reason Umbridge was so hated is because she is the most realistic villain in Harry Potter Universe. She was even based on a real person. Umbridge is someone you can meet in school (an annoying teacher), in store (the lady who cuts in line cause she feels privileged to do so), even your neighbor who will do anything to make your life miserable.
She's not worse than Voldemort, but she is more real, and people don't actually hate her, they fear her.
fudge has blame for a lot of bad shit and dumb decisions but he wouldnt use an illegal spell or send dementors after harry not to mention all the shit she does as the muggleborn punisher under a ministry ruled by voldemort. She is definitely evil
All of the things she does in the series don't emotionally compare to that scene when she tried to kick Trelawney out of the school, it cemented her as one of the most heartless creatures in the entire franchise
Tbh, I didn't see it that way. It's most probably her only reasonably action. Trelawney was a bad teacher. Umbridge got rid of her out of contempt rather than incompetence, but Hogwarts wouldn't suffer from the lack of her.
@@montecristo2553 in the books perhaps, the movies create a far more competent, if bumbling, teacher and even if she was dismissed it's still not right to kick her out of her home without warning.

Order of phoenix will always be my favourite Harry potter movie for the performance from Imelda of umbridge, I enjoyed it but doesn't mean I like the character.
The 5th book just made Harry seem a bit spoiled

Feel like the reason everybody hates probably more than voldemort is because she's a character we've all met/seen in real life. She's almost personal in that sense. Her horribleness is made worse by the fact that many people have gone through having a teacher like that.
Imelda Staunton freaking nailed her! I know the poor woman almost vomited several times having to play this hag but damn she did a good job! My only complaint is Ms. Staunton looks like Umbridge if she got great facial reconstruction surgery to look like an adorable human being instead of the cantankerous old toad she was in the books. Bless this woman.
