  • The raw power and energy of Jalikunda's djembe drumming riveted the attention and delighted the crowd that attended the 1st African Music Festival on the tiny Island of Montserrat in the Caribbean in 2013. The festival, held in Salem Cricket ground, was repeated the next year and on popular request, Jalikunda returned and wowed the crowds in Montserrat again.

This music is a refreshing return to the root of Garifuna music. The lyrics complemented with the pronounced drumming screams Garifinaduo. It reminds us of the intangibles of our culture as highlighted by the proclamation given Garinagu by the UNESCO...................It lacks the sexist tones that have taken over the genre lately. This will serve as a tool a pathway to our return to the culture preserved for us by our ancestors. This music can solidify the acceptance of this music that was introduced worldwide by the late great Andy Palacio.

For the musically clueless, it's actually hard to get that many people to be tightly in sync like that. A certain "synergy" is required.
Just ask any bass drummer in a marching band or drum line. People think that's the easiest one to do, but it's actually really hard when you're NEVER playing on the beat (so you play on the "e," "and," or "a" and sometimes even smaller subdivisions) and have to depend on the other bass drummers to play their hits at the correct time or else it becomes hard to keep time yourself.

I've never realized how black Africa had so much influence over Brazilian culture until I watched this. The people enslaved brought to our land so much culture and, with their struggles and everything they had to go through, they made who we are now. I, as a direct descent of black Africans, am so proud of my ancestors and all the lessons they taught us. It was a sad part of our history, but a lesson that made us resilient and strong and also full of life and willing to show the world the rhythm and the passion we have. My dream is to visit the continent and especially Angola. Love from Brazil, your brothers and sisters from another continent. ❤️
