And US didn't do that, because the US audience won't allow that. They don't care about actual cause and effect of politics, they just care if they government is TOUGH on who they don't like. The fact acting tough will be detriment on US is actually immaterial, because the voting audience lacks the education and patience to learn about it. Both Blinken and Cruz also know this, but they must keep up the charade, because it is a public inquiry, meaning the voting audience is watching. So if they are actually having a private, honest conversation, it will instead go like this: Cruz: "the Iran sanction didn't work". Blinken: "Of course it's not going to work.
