You can't outfunny Dame Edna but Chevy Chase is such an arrogant prick, he thought he could.
I actually attended this taping. When Dame Edna said brilliantly that she thinks a talk show is a monologue interrupted by total strangers, Chevy Chase was speechless for once. I have a friend who worked on this show and she said he was furious backstage afterwards.

Chevy Chase is accustomed to having his own venue & being the cynosure. However, this is Edna’s venue, so he should adjust his ego. Nevertheless, Edna is accustomed to ad-libbing to whatever the circumstances & persons, so that’s where wit comes into play, especially since she’s the master of language. Thus, he is no match for her.

I remember watching this when it was originally broadcast. There are three types of chat show: (1) The guest and the host are the stars (in the UK, Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton); (2) the guest is the star (Michael Parkinson); (3) the host is the star (Dame Edna Everage). Chevy Chase thought he was the star.

This is the worst Dame Edna shows I've seen. It had me squirming at times. Chevy Chase was being purposefully difficult, he must have known what the show's format is, so to act as he did is unbecoming. His comments on being naked, going into the budoir and giving her thrill, sucking the navel etc were inappropriate and in bad taste. He was nasty when he said they were in a studio, and who were all the people, children. What a prick.
Dame Edna was thrown for a loop. She looked uncomfortable and gamely tried to make light of it, but she actually kicked Chevy at one point in frustration. She lost the thread as well. To top it all off... what in the hell was that repellent little brat doing on stage? It was pointless and unfunny. That kid was AWFUL. Then again, the entire episode was awful. Even the audience had a hard time with it.

  • @NxDoyle
    @NxDoyle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Yes, the one truly memorable moment from Edna's American show was Chevy Chase thinking that anyone in a studio with Dame Edna could pull focus.
I've read a couple of comments from people surprised that Chevy was unable to vamp his way through.
But Chevy's shortcomings as an improvisational comedian were known long before this. Johnny Carson once said of Chevy that he "couldn't ad lib a fart after a baked bean dinner."
I also read a comment saying that Edna was thrown for a loop. In all honesty, I think that's nonsense. Edna and her nemesis, Barry Humphries, are far too skilled for that.

Dont be too hard n Chevy Chase, he's actually a decent guy. This was in Humphries' early days in America, and they didn't know he was already a veteran performer in Australia and England. They dont take kindly to what they might have perceived to be a middle-aged upstart from Australia. But they eventually took him to their heart. Did you know that Barry was Fagin in the original Broadway production of "Oliver"?

What's going on? It's a Brit thing! In Britain, in the theater there is what is called Tragedy & Comedy. A spin off from Comedy is a division of Comedy Humor called: "PANTOMIME". It's a British theater art form.
PANTOMIME (PANTO) came from Roman, Italy to France (it included players two young lovers named Harlequin & Columbine)! The British version is a complex Play that includes reversal of roles, caste, men & women, reversal of clothes-cross dressing disguises, actors, music, a charming but clumsy court jester. It's much like every thing goes Topsy Turvy.
MIME means silent actors, without speaking, acting out imaginary stories with imaginary stage props.
PANTOMIME (PANTO) means verbal scripts and plays spoken out loud, with or without stage props. In the British version there is a large participation by the audience, the show includes such as good & evil, heroes & heroines (Harlequin & Cplumbine), villains, ghosts, with audience boos, heckling, screams, shouting and hurrays! And at the end they have a group sing along.
At the time of William Shakespeare, the Puritans were acting like jihadists destroying what they didn't understand or respect. In.the name of their Extremist, Radical, Fundamentalist religious views they.trashed most all churches, chapels, & cathedrals of Great Britain. This included the great works of the Masters: paintings, tapestries, statuary, icons, and stained glass windows!
The eternal loss of the Works of the Masters would be in the hundreds of billions
The Radical Fumdamentalists also focused on Shakespeare and his Theatre. They came with pitchforks & torches to get rid of him & his theatre. They said he was the vilest & wickedest of men. He asked WHY?
They said because he allowed women on stage! The place for women was home doing laundry and working the farm!
Shakespeare asked what can I do to resolve this? They replied that from that day forth NO woman shall ever again be allowed on stage in Great Britain!
From now on you will dress up boys to play girls parts, and you wil dress up men with wigs & dresses to play women's parts!
Out of Respect & Courtesy to the Radical Christian Extremist Fundamentalists -- and to keep from being burned to death -- William Shakespeare and the British Theater Obliged!
It's NOT called Cross Dressing NOR men in drag, it's called accommodating the Radical Religious views of a sensitive faction! How IRONIC that it's the Radical Christian's Puritan Sect that MANDATED English boys & men to have to wear women's clothes!
Dame Edna Everage, has created her own extraordinary & unique art form! She has a brilliant mind and can come up with rapid fire answers that often have multiple meanings, In her stage performances she includes a vast array of comedy, satire, innuendos social commentary, and role reversals of society, and the British Caste system, etc. She is also known for her very generous compliments -- that strangely have multiple meanings -- that sometimes after contemplation could be insults. In that way she is like Don Rickles.. Some of her comments may have many different meanings! Some people catch on & others don't. In her early years some laughed at her and her poor clothes. Now, perhaps, as a defense part of her routine she targets audience members that don't look to well dressed!
In some of her shows up to three or more things will be going on at the same time. Of interest to note is that after a small group laughs, there is a delayed response and then suddenly others get the joke and start laughing. The delay can be several minutes. Then later some more start laughing! Some don't get it and laugh until they repeatedly review the video. Some jokes are based on political and social issues at that time. Americans may miss multiple meaning jokes due to language differences and slang between American English and British English
None enjoy her more than the camera crews. One can often hear them laughing hysterically -- they are usually the first to catch on and know all the things that are happening!
She has an extremely high IQ!
Her shows have been visited by experts, famous comedians, & other professionals. They have tried to study & analyze her, They say she is the Second Greatest Comedian of all time! She is surpassed only by the Great Charlie Chaplin!
In PANTOMIME their is a Good person ever haunted and stalked by the arch evil character villain.
Dame Edna Everage the Good Hero Heroine is forever stalked and followed by the nefarious,
    "Les Paterson"!
Occasionally a studio camera scans the audience. Often one will see famous people , members of Parliament, world famous comedians, prestigious heads of business and industry, etc. If one watches closely they will see in the audience & wiill be surprised to see her mentor -- none other than the great artist of stage and theater Barry Humpries! She has appeared in programs in a debate & interview with Barry Humpries. These feats are probably accomplished by camera & trick photography.
Outside of America, throughout the English speaking world, including all of the British Commonwealth Nations she is extremely famous! Australia minted a coin in her honor, and also published a postage stamp with her portrait.
She is so famous that an entire Opera, including the music orchestration, the choir, and the performance were written to honor her. The production was performed to a packed house at the: Prince Albert Royal Hall. She was given a seat of honor on stage and actually sang some parts!
She has performed to audiences of prestigious peoples & high society luminaries. At some of those performances she has an open question and answer time.
When audience members one by one, at random, ask her questions, she has baffled and stunned her audiences and experts by recognizing and calling the audience members some by name, and recite some of their professions and their life achievements!
Upon viewing reruns one may be surprised that her answers are different than we remembered. Scientists who study this phenomenon say part of this is the skill of the speaker, and part of this is that some of our minds run so fast that it records what the hearer would prefer and want to hear and believe.
In those performances she is able to interact with the audiences and in a split second reply with some incredible answers!
For an American to understand her and why is she so popular and famous with the British? Consider this: just as the Beverly Hills - Hill Billy, Elly Mae, came from the back hills and back country & came into good fortune and moved to the city and the good life and fame -- so did Dame Edna!
She is like "My Fair Lady". She was just a back ward "Commoner", trained and cultured by the famous English Stage and Theater Expert Barry Humpries.
He taught her high society culture, class, manners, etiquette and proper speech. He got her the finest royal dresses!
When she makes special appearances she can be quite elegant. But alas, sooner or later she will give old country home town advice, or tell a shocking bawdy joke. I am often saying outloud: "Oh No She Didn't Just Say That"!
Many will watch reruns and be surprised to catch onto jokes & innuendos that one missed previously!
As of 2020, she is still alive. Due to the pandemic she does TV & YOU TUBE interviews from her home.
The Incredible & Talented LEGEND Dame Edna Everage, LIVES ON!

yes that's right Dame Edna was the original Lady Gaga. Edna used to do a lot of cocaine and other pharmaceuticals in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Way before Lady Gaga made the song "Bad Romance" Dame Edna made the video called "Hag Old Ass"

Wait! Chevy didn't fall down the stairs, that's his trade mark. SNL, has never been as good as it was then. Love, Chevy, Rita, Jane, John B., Dan A., Gilda R. And Bill M. It has never been the same. Saturday night, a little wine, a little wacky weed, those were the days. God bless!
