Your description at the beginning (around 1:30) is so magical. Sigh. It makes me realize how grateful I am to be alive during the era of abundant retro handhelds that keep growing and getting more capable at a time. It's like my younger self (who grew up in the 80's and 90's) gets to be excited every time I fire up my retro handheld because I can play ANYTHING and I can even take it WITH ME?!?!?! I'm one of your early subscribers and I'm so glad TH-cam recommended you to me. You make me feel such joy and happiness with your dweeb schtick, I'm sure we'd get along well in real life (attention: NOT a stalker!). Hope your weekend rocks, TechDweeb.
I'm totally with you. Every time I feel bitter about a device not being perfect I have to remind myself how crazy it is that we get EVERY retro game in our pocket. Appreciate you sticking with me buddy 🤓
Thank you for not glossing over the HDMI functionality. For some people, like me, it's one of the most important features in a handheld. I'm still pondering my next handheld, but the RG353V has always been on my shortlist.
@@williamrosenberg8061 HDMI out is something I would use when I'm visiting friends. Right now I need to hook up my giant laptop to their big screen when we want to do retro gaming sessions.
Hey! Be careful when cutting battery wires, I saw you snipped both wires at the same time with scissors, this means the scissor blades can short the battery. It's usually best if you cut each wire individually and at different lengths so that they never touch! :)
It is because of your Channel that I ended up getting an RG353v myself, & I absolutely love this thing!! I also grew up in the 80’s & 90’s(til now) & it is so amazing to have so many of the Games I grew up with, all on one device that runs good & fits in my Pocket!! Awesome Video, Thanks!
That intro was hilarious 😂. , but I agree I got the RG353VS as I’m not much of an android fan after watching your review and haven’t looked back since.
As far as the joysticks go, I’ve been using my Nintendo switch as my main console for the past 6 years, so I’m so glad that anbernic basically just put the joycon sticks into a Gameboy with triggers. Literally my dream handheld
Hey tech dweeeb... just a word of warning and to others... NEVER cut both the positive and negative wires of a battery with scissors at the same time... (don't even with scissors for that matter)... and a heatshrink with a little solder is your friend to a reliable connection. 9:01 made me feel a disturbance in the force...
Love my rg353m. I installed ArkOS on it and would love any tips and tricks you might have to make using it a better experience. From one guy in his 40s to another, you make good stuff.
Yeah the VS is nearly identical, all of this applies to the VS. The X55 is probably my favourite budget device. Great quality and screen size for the price.
You helped me to reaffirm my recent decision on this very handheld as my main. Recently installed ArkOS and saw the movies folder on the SD card but didn't really dig in further. Would love to see your guide on ArkOS and any tips and tricks there. Thanks!
I have the 353M and it's all this and super pocketable. It's THE device to grab and go for me. Its really versatile (including for watching videos through the Kodi media player), has a (stock) Linux interface that approaches the appeal of Amber Elec, and it has to be the most capable device at its size. If there's something better, I'd love a recommendation but it being so small and coming in black (basically), it's the perfect subtle and discreet device for an adult to kill time in a public place. I always have it. EDIT: by the way apart from Portmaster, I highly recommend the stock firmware. What I did for the ports is I copied my ports over from the 351MP. Almost all of them work perfectly under the 353M stock Linux OS. So, I basically just use postmaster on the 351MP when I want a port and I'm good to go.
Right on!! I dig this pick as your new “daily driver”. Great compromise point for everything retro 2D but also the early 3D stuff. And the portability/pocketability is still good. For me it’s the same pick except I opted for the 353VS instead of the regular V as a cheapskate lol - no dual boot to Android and less RAM but it still seems to run everything up to Dreamcast pretty smoothly. I’m fine with the stock Anbernic Linux OS tbh but I’m going to do an Ark OS install this weekend and see how I like it - hear great things about it. Anything more powerful or harder to emulate or must play in a horizontal form factor or aspect ratio I’ll use my Odin Pro. Anything beyond that I don’t feel the need to play with a handheld and that’s why I have a gaming laptop I guess. I’d love a deeper dive video on Ark from your perspective - have seen the Retro Game Corps guide but was awhile back and I’ll prob need that to get the install going I’m sure! ☮️
Would definitely like to see a good setup and “tweaks” video especially with some good info on shaders and other rendering tweaks. Most of the install vids i have seen for it dont go into optimizing retroarch for the device.

If you can get a hold of one, try out a KTPocket KT-R1. It's pretty compact and pocketable, but can play a lot of GameCube and PS2. It also has a 3:2 aspect ratio display which is amazing for GBA and is awesome for 4:3 and 16:9 content as well. I love mine! Thanks for the video.
Still gotta have my hands on a Retroid Pocket, or a Miyoo Mini... Of the 5 devices I currently own, Anbernic RG Nano really took my heart... Really loved the personal touches you did to your device... Big hug from your fan from the other side of the Equator! 🇧🇷🇧🇷
I’m currently planning to get one. I’ve tested the RG35XX Plus but I was missing the analog sticks and I don’t like the horizontal factor. I have the new rp4 pro but I’m searching the perfect pocket for my trips and also to be used sometimes as a home device and the RG353v seems the perfect one to achieve this.
I've always thought the 353V was underrated. The only thing that keeps me going back to the miyo mini is the garlicOS. If the tech gods ever make a GarlicOS for the 353V, i'll be complete. I'd also love to see a deep dive video of your 353V arkOS setup. What size microSD are you running?
I love Garlic OS, but I must admit I prefer Emulation Station for the customizability and the file management tools (and the extra features of ArkOS like ports and built-in metadata scraping are icing on the cake). 32gb system card, 256gb games card.
You sound like a bad guy from a comic or something haha I also like your humour. You've got a new sub buddy. Keep up this content and I'll keep watching, you'll also grow your channel pretty well also 🙂
It may not play ps2, but at least it can play the android ports of the gta games super well. GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories android ports all run great on 353 devices
I so feel you! My current favorite is still my RG353P which was my very first device and i keep coming back to it! It is just so comfortable. I would recommend you take a look at JelOS, they do updates for Anbernic devices again, they actually do update something like 2 times a week. I personally like it more because it is in my opinion much cleaner then ArkOS. You can use the same ROM sd card, since the file order and folders are the same between the OS’s. So you can just swap out the OS sd card to switch between the OS’s without needing to mess with the Rom folders. :3 Maybe you can make a compare video between JelOS and ArkOS!
If you do make a ArkOS video for the 353 handhelds that would be awesome! I know RGC made a video a while back about it but im sure theres been some changes since then plus another opinion on options would be great! Honestly havent even touched my 353m at all because when I received mine the 405m came the week after but this video is giving me a second look at it.
Completely off-topic, in case you didn't notice. Russ did a video recently, where he showed his youtube. The first video suggestion was yours (RG405M if I recall correctly), and it was showing up as already watched.
Honestly my main console is and has been the Switch for the past 2 years or so. So many incredible titles and huge backlog to go through. As a 30-year-old who got into gaming in my mid twenties and started with Pokémon, I went through my DS and 3DS eras and still love both of them. Right now my main emulation console is the Steam Deck, but it's way too much to take with me regularly. I have an RG35XX Plus coming next week that I plan to use for 8- and 16-bit era gaming, and maybe a bit of PS1, but anything 3D I'll probably run on the Deck.
I used my Miyoo mini more than any other. But the comfort and size eventually made me go back to my RGB10Max2. But I recently picked up a PowKiddy X55 and man oh man do I LOVE that little device, especially for a cool $80 delivered.
2:52 I thought for sure the device he took all the time to tweak was going to be the OG Gameboy in the center, and that tweaking was going to be turning the contrast knob so the green and yellow play off each other juuuust right
Cool Video and I am happy you love your Nintendo style devices. Unfortunately, I don't have the same experience in life as for some reason the Chinese keep thinking that no one will buy a Sega style device. So, I am stuck without a handheld. Unless you want to consider the RS97 with IPS display and CFW firmware on it but, that's still a Nintendo style and the only one I will own as right now it's the only one I can afford to have and play. Even though it's many years old now. Oh well, guess gaming is for those who love Nintendo and not Sega like I do. Don't know if there ever will be a Sega handheld for me.
1. I love your videos, and thank you for helping me cement the device I am buying. 2. You playing fighting force makes young me smile. If I hadn't already subscribed, I'd subscribe 😂. Keep at it, ya dweeb!
@TechDweeb I am very late but here are three (been watching martial arts movies since I was young if you can't tell lol) 1. Jackie Chan Stuntmaster (PS1) 2. Jackie Chan adventures (PS2) 3. Jet Li Rise to Honor (PS2)
Getting one of these for my brother, and eventually myself. We both would really appreciate the install, setup and config video for ArkOS you are offering/suggesting. My brother loves to tinker with tech, but we are both somewhat new to emulation. So yes please, if you could find it in your heart to do that video... (Begins to pray) Our gratitude would be eternal.
I don't have the 353v but something I've noticed that I haven't heard anyone say is that ---- say you have a vertical handheld and a horizontal handheld of the same weight, the vertical one will allow you to play longer before you get tired of holding it. For some reason your hands are an inch or so closer to each other and that seems to make my arms less tired. Yes I also tried holding heavier consoles in my lap, but this feels awkward and fairly tiring.
Your content keeps getting better and better. Most creators are informative. But yours are informative, and extremely entertaining. Thank you for keeping your freak flag flown!! 🏴☠️
I'm genuinely heartbroken that it's not the RG35xx or the Miyoo mini plus. Just curious, why not those two? They're perfect for old farts like us who grew up with the 2D 8 and 16 bit era games. I'm guessing you play a little bit more modern stuff? Please keep making videos about retro handhelds, Love your content!
I LOVE the Mini Plus. It's probably my favourite device in terms of look and hand-feel, and pocket factor. The shortcomings are - no TV out, fewer ports, no analog stick (although I could live without that because of the form factor), no portmaster, and as much as I love Onion OS I have to admit that I prefer Emulation Station because of the customization and library management tools.
@@TechDweebAh, ok. That makes sense. For me, I just can't get over the gorgeous look of the RG35XX and Mini plus. Because I grew up with the Genesis, I have a soft spot for 2D 16 bit games, and so those two systems really hit a homerun for me. I almost never play 3D stuff on these portable devices so the analog sticks are really not important to me personally(I also think they ruin a vertical device aesthetics). That said, the more I interact with the retro emulation community, I realize that I'm probably a bit older than most and my priorities are very different. Lots of people really want the 3D systems in their pocket too. And many people are not that nostalgic that they're willing to give up functionality for something that looks more authentic to an original Gameboy.
I bought Playstation symbol buttons from Sakura Retro Modding for my RP3+ and they are excellent quality. As I mainly use my RP3+ as a PSP replacement they really help sell the feel of that,
I just realized that your intro music has that distinct C64 sound. Like an underwater synthesizer or something. Is there a name for that sound? Someone had a great sounding remake of the famous C64 Commando music, I need to find it now.
this was a fun watch :) I'm going to wait for a v2 of some sort for that extra power for gamecube/ps2. playing those on an ipad pro isn't very fun lol or the phone for that matter.
Hello, I would be interested in the ArkOS guide. I tried it, and also Jelos, but in the end stayed with the stock OS. When I tested the 3, the stockOS had the best performance for Dreamcast, plus I love the hotkey for auto-fire, for SHUMPS. Thanks! Great stuff
Hi, great video. I’ve been watching your channel for like a month trying to figure out which handheld I should pick up. I am looking for something that can play PS2 games like Grandtheft auto, midnight club and Gran Turismo preferably in 16 x 9. As for the style, ideally something around the same size as a Nintendo switch OLED since that’s what I have right now. I don’t care much if it fits in my pocket. Any suggestions?
You nailed it with it being the perfect balance between size and power. Only a bit bigger than Miyoo Mini+/RGXX but can hit N64, DC and PSP (many games look surprisingly fantastic in 4:3--not the least of which being Street Fighter Alpha 3, where the PSP port, which is the best and most feature-rich version, has been stretched to fit widescreen so 4:3 actually squishes it back to normal!) and a ton of ports of nice PC games like Half-Life and Quake. Even the RP3+ is too big and I can't stand Android for whatever reason. I love this thing lots.
@@TechDweeb hahaha! I love that. 🤣 Dude, you are seriously awesome. I think your channel is going to keep growing so big as your content is crazy high quality!
Pretty cool choice, I might have to put it on my Christmas list. Santa better be real or I'm going to have find another reason to sit on fat stranger's laps.
I have the RG353M and run the stock OS on android and use Daijisho on it. Love the simple use of it scraping all of your games. I love the ability to run it as a console. The Hall effect sticks are big plus as well and the ability of Bluetooth controllers. Great overall daily driver to have with you.
This is a great handheld emulator. Got mine off of facebook marketplace. A lot of consoles work and their games. Been tinkering around with it. Changing the operating systems and all that jazz. Able to connect to the tv and have wireless controllers. Fun little machine. Will you be getting the retroid pocket 4/4+?
I have the 353v and i like it for what i have. Unfortunately i deleted the linux os and don’t have a computer to redownload the os. Honestly i really love it but i kinda hate how people glossed over it for the XX and miyoo mini as far as customization goes
Wonderful video I was using my phone for emulation and it just doesn't feel quite right. With the Steam Deck I don't have a need for a powerful android handheld. This video really helps to lead me in the right direction. Thanks

32gb system card, 256gb games card.
I am using a 512gb card@@TechDweeb
You sound like a bad guy from a comic or something haha I also like your humour. You've got a new sub buddy. Keep up this content and I'll keep watching, you'll also grow your channel pretty well also 🙂
Thanks so much for saying so!
It may not play ps2, but at least it can play the android ports of the gta games super well. GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories android ports all run great on 353 devices
I'll test them out!
Maybe you can make a compare video between JelOS and ArkOS!
Saaaame they day you got it I know you would love it!!! It's my main daily driver too
Completely off-topic, in case you didn't notice. Russ did a video recently, where he showed his youtube. The first video suggestion was yours (RG405M if I recall correctly), and it was showing up as already watched.
I think that's what I'll get I've been wanting a system that plays almost all consoles
Just got the 353V today and love it.
Nice! Hope you love it!
2:52 I thought for sure the device he took all the time to tweak was going to be the OG Gameboy in the center, and that tweaking was going to be turning the contrast knob so the green and yellow play off each other juuuust right
It's a pipe dream! There is NO contrast knob setting that makes the screen just right! It's NEVER just right!
Cool Video and I am happy you love your
Nintendo style devices. Unfortunately, I don't have the same
experience in life as for some reason the Chinese keep thinking
that no one will buy a Sega style device. So, I am stuck without a handheld.
Unless you want to consider the RS97 with IPS display and CFW firmware on it but,
that's still a Nintendo style and the only one I will own as right now it's the only one
I can afford to have and play. Even though it's many years old now. Oh well, guess gaming
is for those who love Nintendo and not Sega like I do.
It's a great game! I didn't know about it til recently but I'm glad I found it. LMK if you know any other good 3d beat-em-ups!
@TechDweeb I am very late but here are three (been watching martial arts movies since I was young if you can't tell lol)
1. Jackie Chan Stuntmaster (PS1)
2. Jackie Chan adventures (PS2)
Will do!
I know this is probably not really a retro handheld but my steam deck does everything I need it too and more.
I'm almost with you, my daily is the RG353M, It fits more comfortable on my hands
Awesome video as always my boi
Your content keeps getting better and better. Most creators are informative. But yours are informative, and extremely entertaining. Thank you for keeping your freak flag flown!! 🏴☠️
I appreciate the encouragement!
It on the video, because of retro achievements, being able to backup save files on the cloud, play PC ports and to play on a TV.
As I mainly use my RP3+ as a PSP replacement they really help sell the feel of that,
I promised myself i wont get another retro handheld but you might have made me break it. It sounds perfect. 🤬
I just realized that your intro music has that distinct C64 sound. Like an underwater synthesizer or something. Is there a name for that sound? Someone had a great sounding remake of the famous C64 Commando music, I need to find it now.
Yeah I dunno! I found it on free music archive. There's a link in the description. Catchy tune huh?
Great video! Interesting choice as your main handheld.
Are you planning on reviewing the retroid pocket 2s?
Definitely! Just waiting on it to arrive.
this was a fun watch :) I'm going to wait for a v2 of some sort for that extra power for gamecube/ps2. playing those on an ipad pro isn't very fun lol or the phone for that matter.
It's a good choice for what you get. Definitely picking it up myself.
353V Transparent Purple owner here.
Great stuff young lad.
Thanks old man!
@@TechDweeb Sadly, that's a reality now in my life, even gamers don't live forever.
Well said
This came at the perfect time for me!
Fate brought us together Markus
@@TechDweeb hahaha! I love that. 🤣 Dude, you are seriously awesome. I think your channel is going to keep growing so big as your content is crazy high quality!
Pretty cool choice, I might have to put it on my Christmas list. Santa better be real or I'm going to have find another reason to sit on fat stranger's laps.
Never fear. Mall Santas will always be real, and they'll always listen to your wishes, and always whisper what a good boy you've been.
Yup!
But THIS is my favorite handheld. You've never seen a handheld like THIS. Once you see THIS, you'll want one too!
Hey you're good. You should make TH-cam videos!
Great video man loved it! ♥
Appreciate it!
Let us know if the rg405v becomes the new go to or if it's too big for the cargo pocket! It's about the same size as the original Game Boy!
I have one and will be testing extensively soon!
"it looks like a Gameboy" but you modified the face buttons!
Nice video, waiting for mine. Is ark os. Android or Linux? I chose the vs version that’s why the question
ArkOS is Linux, you can use it on the VS ☝️
You kinda recommended the rg353VS over this 5 months ago in a video… so why is the rg353V your daily driver/recommendation and not the rg353vs?
My main for retro is 405m. Better than 353v and way more comfortable. Basically the same size too. Its not much bigger at all.
gotta say, these things are also great cause they have a wifi chip and you can play retroachievements with these things!
I have the 353v and i like it for what i have. Unfortunately i deleted the linux os and don’t have a computer to redownload the os. Honestly i really love it but i kinda hate how people glossed over it for the XX and miyoo mini as far as customization goes
Yeah I’m going to buy one soon thx to you recommending it. I was waiting on a handheld because so many are coming out but this one looks good thx.
I think this one will be good for quite a while.
@@TechDweeb that’s good to know because I like that you can hook it up to tvs.
Wonderful video I was using my phone for emulation and it just doesn't feel quite right. With the Steam Deck I don't have a need for a powerful android handheld. This video really helps to lead me in the right direction. Thanks
I would love to know if this stayed true after getting the rp2s
I have the 351 and it's been amazing. I was thinking of upgrading to this or the 405
I might take my phone collection to a phone selling kiosk and just stick with Anbernic like devices
Absolutely agree with every word in this video.
353v is a good companion to Steamdeck.. in an emergency situation you can use it as controller tru USB-C
