    The sensors indicated nothing there, but the transporter was able to ascertain the location of the bridge, lock on to it and beam them directly there. Fascinating.

      Yes, don't you love the lack of logic? Yet they can see it. Last i had physics light is a form of radiation. As you know the dimensions you could get range by parallax... but still wouldn't explain the comment about sensors.

    • @StarFuryG7
      @StarFuryG7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@francisdavis1271 It's not a lack of logic. The Defiant was caught between two universes, and the sensors didn't know what to make of it, whereas the transporter may have been receiving different readings. The ship was in a state of flux between the two universes, so this really isn't that hard to figure out in terms of the writing and what was going on in the episode.

      Well they could see it and we're familar with the ship. They could have locked into a spot in space that they would know would be the bridge. The bigger question is how is something solid that their sensors can't see.

      Yes. This clip is from the original version of the episode "The Tholian Web", not the remastered HD version.
      If you pay attention to the original version, any time another ship of the Enterprise's type is seen, with only one exception, it's seen from far away or from an angle where the registry number and name can't be seen. This is because NBC refused to provide the show with a proper effects budget, and they only had one ship model (the Enterprise) and they crew didn't want to risk damaging the model by repainting it every time we see another ship. So the Defiant and others never actually have their name and reg. number shown on screen, are only mentioned by name, and Trekkies had a great number of guesses and theories as which ships might have which registry numbers. Later in the 70's, a fan wrote an unofficial book on Star Trek, which they gave the Defiant the randomly made up number NCC-1764.
      The only exception to the no name/number rule originally is the USS Constellation, NCC-1017, from the episode The Doomsday Machine. The plot required close-up shots of the damaged ship, but again NBC said no. The effects crew worked around this by going to a local hobby store and purchasing the officially licensed plastic USS Enterprise NCC-1701 model kit, putting it together and painting it, and writing "USS Constellation" by hand on the hull, with the decal NCC-1701 re-arranged to become NCC-1017, since only the Enterprise name and number came in the kit (the number really should have been NCC-1710 to be closer to the Enterprise's number, but I think they wanted to better distinguish the two ships visually by number.)
      When Star Trek Enterprise came around and they did the Defiant in the alternate universe in 2005, the CGI effects allowed us to see officially see the Defiant's registry number for the first time. Which, taking from the unofficial book, the producers decided to keep as NCC-1764, since it had become somewhat unofficial canon by that point. A couple years later, CBS remastered TOS to HD, but the original special effects footage camera wise was determined to be of too poor quality to re-use. CBS decided it would be better to manually re-create every visual shot in the entire 3 seasons from scratch, rather than abandon the project. In this remastered version, the ships have had all of their names and numbers made visible when they are seen, and all are taken from the 70's book.

    Yes, Star Trek was as low-budget as they came in the 1960s. They probably spend more for a 45-second commercial for pizza today than they did on an episode of the original series. What Gene and company accomplished with that budget, however, is nothing short of astonishing.

      I think you might be referring to VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. Yes, I've seen it, and the movie it was based on. And LOST IN SPACE. And many others. Science fiction in those days was widely regarded as 'kids stuff' and as a result sci fi shows were given fairly meager budgets.
      The budgets may have been on par with the westerns and cop shows that were the staples of television drama back then, but sci-fi has a lot more costly special effects. So, in effect, one could say that the budgets of sci-fi shows were not what they should have been.
      Which makes the achievements of STAR TREK all the more impressive to me.

      Star Trek was actually one of the most expensive shows in production at the time. That's a big part of why it was cancelled. If you think about it, the vast majority of other shows had no special effects at all. Star Trek was always needing special effects, new sets, expensive makeup, tons of extras. A very expensive show.

    Interesting that Spock said the computers can find no trace of the ship that they see but yet the transporter seem to have locked onto the bridge

    • @StarFuryG7
      @StarFuryG7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spock said the sensors weren't detecting it. That's because the ship was in a state of flux between two universes. The transporter is then able to lock on to its bridge, but once there, McCoy soon realizes that the ship is "dissolving" because it's phasing out of this universe. From a writing standpoint it does all make sense.

    The transport technology aims to turn humans into radio waves to transfer them to another location. This is what transport technology is. I thought in the past it was the super speed of moving the human from the spaceship to land. This is what science research must be looking into finding a way of creating this form of transform travel.

    So many unknown's here, why was the Enterprise dispatched or how to the Defiant ?, what kind of ship & her crew was she ? could this had been a special ops ship involving Section 31 type missions ?. Kirk seemed eager to know before even ascertaining it was the defiant... I hope this ship comes back somehow back to either the new discovery series (highly unlikely) or maybe in a trek film in JJ's Kelvin Timeline... The Defiant definitely has a unique background, like sisko said "Desperate times, brings desperate measures Major" it's no accident Starfleet in the 24th Cent names their 1st warship "Defiant" (Class) !

      Why/how was Enterprise following Defiant? Presumably, Starfleet Command lost contact with Defiant and sent Enterprise to search starting with her last confirmed location and knowing what her expected destinations were after that.
      What kind of ship? Same class as Enterprise. Crew? The few bodies we saw seemed to be human or close (I doubt they were spending any extras on alien makeup etc... with all the money for Tholian ship model and special effects in this episode.
      If by "what kind" you mean normal exploration or warship testbed or black ops...? I don't know. I wasn't much of an 'Enterprise' series fan, so I don't remember if that mirror episode gave any clues.
      I like the story from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers series of books (yeah, I know - not canon unless they use it later for something else) that had 24th century Tholians rediscover it still drifting in interphase, make an offer to the Federation, Captain Gold and the SCE team on the DaVinci get assigned to recover the ship. The DaVinci crew discover that Defiant had answered a distress call from a Klingon colony (near Tholian space) under attack, arrives to find all dead and unidentified attacker gone, finds some tech left over from the attack, realize it's Tholian, try to quietly & inconspicuously get out of border territory and back to the Federation, to give the find to Command so it can eventually be given to the Klingons. Trying to avoid detection in/near Tholian space, they try to stay off the beaten path, which leads to them stumbling into the interphase rift and getting trapped.
      When Captain Gold tells the 24th century Tholians about the find (without realizing the full significance of it), the Tholian commander decides it would be better to attack, let the Defiant disappear back into the rift, and eliminate witnesses - rather than rile up the Klingon Empire by exposing the Tholians' responsibility for the death of that long-ago colony.
      Fortunately, the DaVinci crew survives the attack and escapes the trap (yay! everything is better with engineers!). The Federation sends for Ambassador Worf to get both parties to the negotiating table before the revelation leads to a war.

    Yea. At its start Star Trek was a failure. They had completed all of the 1-4 seasons and when it started to even fade what little attention it had, they started showing in on the TV channels earlier in the nights. Which cought the attention of the young people. BOOMing in popularity after that.

    • @jpowell180
      @jpowell180 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3 seasons.
      Enterprise had 4.
      TOS started getting popular in syndication - they even had a cartoon in the early 70s; in the late 70s, Roddenberry was going to revive the live-action series, but Paramount started to get cold feet, so they told him to make a movie instead.
      Star Trek: The Motion Picture had great FX, a great director (Robert Wise), but the story was boring.
      Paramount noticed that, while not a blockbuster hit, the film still made a modest profit, so they allowed a second film (albeit with a much smaller budget); Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was a huge hit with audiences, and was more action-oriented (like the original series); this opened the door for a huge franchise that didn't stop until 2004.
      JJ Abrams made his reboot five years later, and now a new (prequel) series is in the works, Star Trek: Discovery - which takes place in the original (Prime) Star Trek universe, a couple of decades or so before the Original Star Trek series (NOT in the JJ-Verse).

      Well there were only around 12 Constitution class ships at the time and the Defiant was probably the only one within x light years of where they were. They were searching specifically for it in the area it went missing so odds are that any connie that pops up will be the Defiant.

    0:59 I'd love to know how Kirk opens a line to Dr. McCoy with the push of a button. I'm guessing some AI records his message and figures out who to send it to, so McCoy gets it on a slight delay. You'll see Kirk walk up to a wall, press a button, and address the Bridge or someone else. Again, it must an AI figuring out the connection in real time because all he's doing is pressing a button.

      This "inconsistency" is no different from that of the combadges of more recent series. In my opinion, the computer records the message, understands who the recipient is and transmits it with a delay.

    Wait wait wait, there was a Defiant ship in Kirks era? How? Why? In Deep Space Nine they made it sound like there was no other ship that existed until the Defiant was made. But it was kept in storage. So did the creaters of the show forget about it? Did the characters forget? And why did the ship have such a massive change?

    • @sg39g
      @sg39g 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is never stated that the Defiant-class Defiant was the first ship to bear that name. But it is true that unlike the Enterprise, the registry number was not reused. I see two explanations for this. Perhaps reusing a registration is a rare honor. But it is also possible that since the new Defiant is a prototype, and therefore must have an NX prefix, it was decided that it would have a new number.
