  • My new video with Scotty's best of! • Chief Engineer Montgom...
    It's a scene from the famous episode "The trouble with Tribbles". After a bar-fight with Klingons Kirk is a bit angry and wants to know who started it. Of course, Scotty :) I love this conversation and the music in the background.
    I do not own this, I do not profit from this video, all rights reserved, Paramount stuff etc.
    Subtitles thanks to Chakoteya.net

    What I've always loved about this scene is how every man in that lineup either knew or had a good idea of who started the fight. But not a single one said a word against Mr. Scott. Even after losing shore leave, even after being confined to quarters. And the crew is never depicted as having an antagonist relationship with Kirk. He's no Captain Bligh that they had to form a united front against. Even under a captain generally regarded as good and fair, no man was willing to sell Scott out for their own benefit.

      Better still, while Kirk was clearly taking a hit to his ego when Scotty didn't defend his honor, but the Enterprise's honor... he absolutely understood and agreed, you don't insult the Enterprise and get away with it. Basically a case of "understandable, but rules are rules so technically I have to punish you". Also, the entire crew refusing to sell out Scotty, even to Kirk who is fair and understanding, is awesome. The crew has loyalty on every level, and they'd rather all be punished in solidarity than snitch on one of their own. Great scene.

    I love this scene from "The Trouble with Tribbles." The disciplinary action Kirk gives Scotty (being restricted to quarters) made the engineer jump for joy because he could read his technical journals. It was always impressive that the writers and Shatner could pull off allowing Kirk to be a little vulnerable at times. This scene allows Kirk to be a little insulted that Scotty thought of the ship first rather than Kirk. But Kirk never needs to resort to being mad and secretly finds the whole thing humorous. All the while he remains comfortable and in absolute control of himself and his command. Lots of subtle layers Shatner displays masterfully in this scene.

      Well said as well Jaim Haas. Shatner as Kirk was a master at simultaneously mixing multiple layers of personality in subtle degrees as the scenes called for. In Balance of Terror, for example, the last scene where Kirk consoles the young lady who lost her fiance during the battle, he is able to be consoling and nurturing while fully displaying his sense of command, authority and overall just being a really cool guy. A superb master of his craft as were Nimoy and Kelley.

    Regarded as one of the best episodes, Kirk looks tired and pensive all through, but he never is actually dropping the ball. He starts to perk up just when needed; masterful writing and acting having the Captain know when to show his authority or just relax and go with the flow. Interesting comment made on the making of Hunt for Red October, when they got to ride on a US submarine for the making. The captain was very relaxed and just oozed authority and when orders had to be given, he gave them calmly and they noted hes the sort of guy you would follow into hell and not question him. Shatner portrays kirk as both a strong high endurance leader and also accessible but ready for a bit of biffo when needed.

    Scotty's loyalty to the Enterprise is proof that they had the right man for the job. In the episode "Let This Be The Last Battlefield" Scotty's loyalty to Kirk & the chain of command that prompted him to play his own part to initiate the Enterprise self-destruct sequence (he was numb, in shock, knowing what he was doing...but he did it) is proof that he's right man for the position. That job, that position, was the perfect match for that man.

    2:32 "They called the enterprise a garbage scow" That's the majour insult for Scotty :D That's true today in many Navies, you never insult their ship. IN some ways, Kirk should be proud that one of his Officers did this action defending the Ship's honour. A Captain is only as good as their crew and ship.

      I don't think it was really meant to be. Scotty was taking insult after insult, tried to stop somebody else from making the first punch, and was honestly doing the best he could. But he's only human, and he's going to hit a snapping point. Especially when the Klingons insulted not only their Captain, but their ship. Plus, Scotty was reading the technical journals earlier for fun. I don't think Kirk was actually going to punish Scotty, but seeing as it was on the record he had to say /something/ that might be seen as a punishment to some.

    • @EchoFrost13
      @EchoFrost13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@soslothful I wouldn't really say deception. He still is giving Scotty a mild punishment, but it's more of a not-so-serious, don't-do-this-again sort of deal. He confined everybody else to their quarters until he found out who started the fight, so why wouldn't he administer the same punishment to someone who was clearly provoked into starting a fight?
