    Maggggggiiiiiieeeeeee!! Laughing my butt off watching her eyes go from the rabbit, to you, to the rabbit, to you. LOL
    As to the gasifier stove commentary, you are one of the few people that as ever spoken about packing the stove well vertically and doing a top fire ignition. I saw TH-cam video where a guy showed this very well, and he got an excellent burn from it, without repacking every 37 seconds, without constant attention, etc. Cheers.

      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Ray! She looked quite expectant didn’t she, her patience astounds me sometimes!! The vertical stick stacking/fire on top is my next method to try - I’ve a feeling it’ll be better than the pellets but perhaps not burn for so long, we’ll see! Atb and thanks! Simon

      @@simonablokeinthewoods , i wonder that the pellets are too close together and don't allow enough oxygen to mix in to burn well, your oxygen issues notwithstanding.

      Hi Simon, from Scole Bridge. Managed to squeeze under the fallen willow, and had to get out and push a few times. The reeds are almost blocking the entire width in places. Paddled for about 45 mins and stopped for lunch. Then decided as it was hard going and we would have a strong headwind on the way back, best to call it a day there and head back upstream to the car. It was still a fun way to spend a few hours :-)

      I bet it was good. It's been years since I've had rabbit but we raised them on the farm when I was growing up. I can still remember the first time seeing one at the kitchen table and thinking "hmm, that's odd... that chicken has four legs."

  • @phillee2814
    @phillee2814 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice recipe, although I'd have chosen a non-gaarlic variety of sausage, or maybe a bit of bacon (because garlic makes me ill).
    Rabbits (even wild ones) can be fat, but it's almost all right under the skin, which we almost invariably remove. The only real alternative is to singe the fur off the skin, but the process stinks!
    Oh, and if you aren't sure how to pronounce Knorr, you could look up how messrs Flanders & Swann described the spelling of "gnu" (if you don't already know they consider themselves the knicest work of gnature in the zoo!). It's worth a laugh, at any rate (along with many - or even most - of their other works).

    Great video. When you mentioned rabbit being tough you've had in the past I think it is because the rabbit we get here can be old as usually shot and have no idea of age when I was in Malta rabbits are bred to eat and it was always tender and amazingly tasty. In ww2 there was no meat in Malta and rabbits were dropped of for troops to eat and became a national dish shallow fried in garlic, white wine then chicken stock tastes amazing.

    Another lovely video. I have never successfully cooked rabbit, maybe I will give it another go.
    I am amazed you said the wood cat-litter was ok as cat-litter. About 30 years ago when I had 2 new kittens that were supposed to be house trained and I decided to try the wood litter (maybe a different formula but looks the same) both cats refused to use litter tray and weed next to the litter tray. Eventually I sussed that the reason they did it was when weeing, the urine soaked into litter, expanded and made it very uncomfortable for kittens with little legs. Dumped that stuff in favour of clay type litter and all was well. Looking at your comments at the end of video I can't help thinking that wood pellets are totally useless!

And your pup seems pretty excited to join you for dinner & boating adventures.. my dogs only dream of the day. I could fit us all on a barge maybe ❤️ question: I've seen you making breakfast in the videos, how do you succesfully transport eggs (without breaking) while back packing & boating? The commercial wood gasifier/twig stove we purchased for testing came with several extra pieces. There is a small, round grill with folding handle. It is good for one burger, a small steak, chop etc. Also included is a pan to protect the ground as live coals and ash fall through the burner and a small pan for burning alternate fuels. In addition to wood, we have used liquid alcohol (spirits in many parts of the world), fuel tabs, gelled alcohol and cans of Sterno type gelled alcohol meant for emergency stoves and chaffing dishes. We have even placed our Trangia spirit burner inside this stove in windy conditions and it worked very well. A simple change in how you configure the stove makes the unit very flexible. No need to carry a wind screen as the stove casing acts as your wind screen. Great combination for apartment/condo dwellers for emergency use during a power outage. The sill of an open window (non-flammable masonry) or small space on a veranda and you are good to go. The only thing we would NOT do with this unit is grill food directly over fuel tabs or gelled alcohol as they give off a slight unpleasant odor. A trip to a local pack or wooded area should supply you with all the renewable fuel you could ever need.

      It’s a chopping board/strainer made by Trangia, fits on top of the Trangia 25 and 27. 👍

    Yes, really enjoyed that, great editing again, but I was thinking I should call the RSPCA when you were cutting up that Rabbit as it was pure torture for Maggie (the Show Stealer.). I don't always watch your videos as soon as I receive a notification of an upload because, a) I know they're usually motivating, but b) totally relaxing and so, I save them for like now, when I have a spare hour to sit with a beer and enjoy.
    How much do you pay for the Cat Litter I wonder. I have a wood burning pellet stove in my apartment on the Black Sea and I pay around 4-5 Euro for good quality wood burning pellets that come in 10 or 15 Kg bags - surely, must be better for the task than cat litter, but I wouldn't know for sure. A small set of hand bellows that are lightweight might help you get a better burn as you rightly identified, you're starving your burn of oxygen with the way it is now, but you'll work it out.
    I don't know if it is Simon a Bloke in the Woods or Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall as you both have a relaxed TV voice and an interesting way of delivery. Perhaps you should do, ''Simon - Riverside Island'', I read the book, saw the film and tasted the stew. LOL. .

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha - thank you!! I think the bag of pellets was about £3 for I’m guessing 5kg, so much more expensive and I’m sure the fuel pellets are better quality and probably burn for longer! The bellows are a good idea - I actually had my blow-pipe bellows with me too, just didn’t think to use it!
      Really appreciate your kind words! Atb, Simon

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have Red Kites about, but they are quite rare - more likely to be a buzzard, they’ve made a spectacular come-back in recent years after a very successful breeding program. I love them!

      Could be a red kite, but I don't think I've seen or heard one for the past 15 years or so. Black kites are around here in the season, they sound much like buzzards but with a bit of a tremolo in the cry. We have a little river, the Bourbince, with a gorgeous 12thC romanic bridge over it at some 70 meters from our house and after high water levels black kites often come to scour for carrion.

    We have those Knorr gels in the States too and they are by far and away my favorite. They taste almost homemade. I would suggest a little dredge of flour for the rabbit prior to cooking. It will help get a better browning and flavoring and will also add flour to the stew to help thicken. Just a thought on how to add a touch more flavor and texture to the stew. FYI, onions are very bad for dogs even small amounts.

    • @robertm4050
      @robertm4050 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to say you should age your meat a little. Larger the animal the longer the aging. You can dry age in your fridge or brine it for a couple 1-3 days for something like a rabbit. It helps release water content and make it more tender.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Robert, I meant to take some flour to thicken up the gravy, but in my rush to get out the door, i completely forgot it!!
      I do know that about onions, I was careful to remove as much as I could from Maggies portion, although she has eaten a whole pan of fried onions before with no ill effect!! (She swiped it off the kitchen side!) she must have guts of steel!!
      Good advice about brining the rabbit, although this one was lovely and tender. I’ve had tough ones before that certainly would have benefitted from it!
      Cheers, Simon

      I am sure you get loads of comments from us keyboard warriors telling you how to do things, you are always great about it. The onions hurt the kidneys and stop them from functioning and pretty much anything in the allium family can do it. Maggie is pretty big and healthy so it probably didn't bang her up, thankfully. Those Knorr packs are amazing and the base to many of my dishes too. Hopefully I will make a video up at some point and you can tell me how to do things "better". Lol.

      Robert M - Not at all Robert, it’s always good to receive tips and advise from people! I’m no expert in anything I do, and one of the great things about TH-cam and in particular feedback from viewers is that the huge collective of expert knowledge can be shared - I love it - I’ve learnt loads from comments and feedback! So you certainly don’t need to worry about offering advise or correcting my inaccuracies for that matter (of which there are many I’m sure hahaha!)
      I knew about Onions other Allium family plants being bad for dogs, but didn’t know how or why, so thanks for the insight! I guess she was very lucky with the fried onions that time! Thanks Robert! Atb, Simon
