Nice! Good ole Gold Dot. Actually I was worried they weren’t gonna open up from the short barrel. Glad I was wrong too. That was fantastic performance all the way around. I definitely would carry these if I’m in a 45 frame of mind. Awesome stuff as always 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
The rule of thumb made up by people a lot smarter and more experienced than I am, is to use lighter bullets in short barrels, and heavier bullets in long barrels. I am not a gunsmith or even a reloader but from what I and others have seen, this rule of thumb works. Thanks for another informative video. I have not idea why you don't have over 100k subscribers yet but you certainly deserve them and a lot more.

Well thank you for that test, my wifey and I both have the G-30, and we use the Gold Dot...regular ones, and never thought that it possibly "wouldn't work", but now I see that they will!
Good test, Brian! I got some of the short barrel Gold Dots and found that the SB bullets would at least partially expand down to 750 fps! Penetration was in the 14" range. By the time I got up to 850, the bullets were expanding fully while retaining the penetration depth. By the time I reached a max velocity of 950 (per the Speer reloading manual) the bullets were fully expanded with the petal folded back along the shank of the bullet and penetration had improved to about 18". Ok, to be fair I have never tested the 230 gr Gold Dot because I personally use the 185 gr Gold Dot, which has very similar results to the 230 SB bullet, including penetration. Truth is, I've never even bought any of the 230 GD's because I simply don't trust them to open, especially if the range is extended very much! I have tested 230 gr Hydrashoks and had several failures with a Colt Comnander and the Glock 21. So I've shied away from the heavy 230's and relied on the 185's for self defense purposes. Gold Dots have a reputation of opening well at most 'normal' velocities but I sure have a lot more confidence that the SB version will definitely work with the 230 gr bullets! So while most of my back up ammo is the 185, I do have a couple hundred of the 230 gr SB rounds loaded up. First pick is still the Lehigh Xtreme Defender but my back up stuff is pretty good, too! Cheers, jc
Ah so by making the walls of the crater in the short barrel projectiles thinner it is able to expand with less energy. Even though the standard gold dot expanded too i think they intended the short barrel stuff to be used in an even shorter barrel than that glock.
I'm honestly not surprised that it performed. I seen someone testing both regular Federal HST and the plus P version of the HST through a Smith & Wesson Shield 45 which has a 3.3 inch barrel, and those were averaging between 780 - 820 FPS and they performed well. I have however seen Federal punch being tested through The Shield 45 and only getting 750 FPS and it would not open up and perform at all in synthetic gel.
Great video Tools. Been working my ass off this summer so i need to do some catching up on your videos. Hopefully you've done some 44 mag stuff. Thanks Tools!

The 45 ACP doesn't really need high velocities as long as the projectile is engineered for standard velocities. Gold Dots are generally money in terms of matching performance to designed velocities in their products. The biggest flaw in this loading is that it is absolutely a standard pressure load and the energy is notably lower than more fiesty +P offerings.
I'm with you I wasn't expecting good performance. Especially anything that's not pushing close to a 1000 fps. Good job Speer! Great test!! Appreciate you!!
It seems like if the mfg bothers to tailor the bullet to the speed it can be great if they don't say bullets designed for 9mm in 380 loads it can seriously underperform.
I got some of both of these. If you really want to see interesting expansion shoot the short barrel version through a full size gun with a long barrel. Boy, do they open wide. The 357 magnum short barrel version is great too. The 230 grain 45 acp regular loads do qell, but they really excel out of a carbine rifle though. Get that heavy bullet moving faster.

By the way I did mount a Olight Baldr Pro R 1350 lumens with green laser sight in the unit on my Smith and wesson m&p 2.0 10mm and it's been holding zero just fine after 50 + rds of practice ammo, I was afraid it might not hold zero under the full power load ammo but I have used the quick release to remove it and reinstall it and so far no shift in zero. Excellent results! The short barrel GD round is what my friend carries in his Rock Island 3.50 1911 he says he put 5K rounds through it & no problems except a bit of rust but easily remedied. It's one of those all metal guns that like to run wet with lot's of gun oil like the Beretta92FS.
I bought some 45/230 Gold Dot bullets to handload for my Commander-length 1911. Speer had the option of standard or short barrel projectiles. I always suspected that was the singular difference between the loads, and this test confirms it. (Despite what some folks want to believe, there is no magical fairy dust wunderpowder that makes bullets go faster from short barrels.)
Lucky Gunner tested both of these cartridges with a 3.3" barrel. All 10 shots expanded well. The difference was the short barrel bullet over expanded a tad. It was 0.1" narrower in OD. It penetrated one inch deeper than the standard round.

Good video thanks Tools!
Thank you sir.😎👊
Wouldn't mind seeing the difference between the two from the 1.9" Derringer size bbl.
Does anyone even make one that small?🤷♂️
Love the Glock 30!
😎👊
One thing Paul Harrell did/does was test against bone, it would be nice to see some testing against bone, would like to see how a 45acp FMJ and HP fair against some serious bone, go all the way, skull bone maybe ?
Great ammo test. Thank you.
Thank you sir.😎👊
Good text as always. Gold dots are just time tested and proven. Would love to see some of that freedom munitions X-Def stuff for us poor folks lol.
They did pretty good in the Ammo Inc loading if I remember correct.
@@ToolsandTargets I did see that one. They did do well.
I’d like to see the xdef from freedom munitions as well! Their 9 and 40 are very well priced but I’m very skeptical
@@Gator69420 mrgunsngear did a text of the 9mm 124 grn. years ago and they did well. But I would like to see more tests, Especially like the 357 mag stuff like that
@@corybrown8422 for sure man! It’s priced pretty well but I know how a lot of that cheap stuff is. I try and stick with HST, Gold dots and underwood 🤷🏼♂️
Spear Gold Dot 👍
I remember when Gold Dot came out, was pretty much the first bonded that made it bigtime. I was hoping it would do well. When it came out the only other real 'premium' stuff I remember was Hydrashock and these were vasty better in all the tests I saw. I had to look it up, it's even older than I thought. Debuted in 1991, so was out for a long time when I got into all this.
Golden Oldie!😎👊
