Here in u.k to clean up fuel oil contamination in the ground after a major spill will set you back about £50,000 and I'm not joking. Bunded tanks are a requirement for domestic use. Just having mine replaced which sits on a raised concrete base. Total cost is £2500.

Thanks for showing the whole remediation. Very delicate bucket-and-claw work here.

The interior of that tank looked like a starry sky. That's impressive and discouraging.

    Love the content as always!
Two questions arise after watching all your videos:
    1) How exactly is an NFA letter secured from the DEP? After remediation is there some type of report that you guys generate and send over to them? What exactly does that process look like?
    2) What is the minimum amount of contamination that can be left in the ground to complete remediation? I believe you mentioned in a prior video that there is a minimum level of contamination that can be left in the ground (i.e. the PID reading doesn't have to be exactly zero). Let's say the results show 500mg/kg (I think that's the unit that is used when testing soil), what happens in that case?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking to get into real estate investing and properties with oil tanks worry me and I'm trying to understand the entire process. Thankfully, your videos are proving to be very informative about the topic. If I were ever in an oil tank situation, rest assured Tank Masters is the company that will get my business with no hesitation.

      1. Yes, we need to complete the physical contaminated soil removal. Then post excavation soil samples. All this is put into a closure report with other documents and manifests.
      2. For example. 36 on my PID meter is what I look for to close a spill and thats around 750ppms of TPHC. Anything under 999ppms is acceptable to leave in the ground according to NYSDEC.

A full closure report need to be submitted with all passing sample results and manifests. You then pay $400 as a MOA agreement and the state will issue a NFA, no further action letter.
Anything under 1000 parts per million of TPHC can be left in the ground

Will oil travel horizontally? You can’t possibly be responsible for oil found in an future excavation near the site you remediated?

wow that is a heck of a surprise to find somebody just left a tank with oil still in it and nobody noticed any oil lines into house?

They knew..it is discolosed in the sale contract…they ignored it probably for 20 years expecting that they could just leave it be…if it wasnt disclosed, even 20 years later you have a claim

How quickly does this need to be cleaned up? We had 200 gallons spill in our community right above 1 of the well houses. We are without water & they have barely done anything to start clean up. We are on a steep incline & there is a ditch from the top of the community to the bottom that it has pour its way to. DEP & Management isn't answering questions. I'm going off of others who had heating oil spills & they had to rush to clean it up

It needs to be cleaned up IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!! The spillers are also responsible to take a potable water analysis of your drinking water well, if you are down stream.

@Tank Masters Environmental I figured as much. They have only dug a 8ft by 2ft area by the well house. It's been pouring g rain & the dirt is on plastic on a hill sode

Home inspectors are mostly useless. I've never had them find anything that I didn't notice already myself. Also I hope you charged that customer for kicking you off site. Some people have such nerve.
