Setting up the ultimate home makerspace! - Moving house and custom parts

  • Moving house is a pain. It’s particularly a pain when you have a vast collection of 3D printers and other manufacturing equipment, it gets a lot harder. In this video I take you through my move, but focus mainly on setting everything up to be the ultimate home makerspace. This includes custom 3D printed and laser cut parts.
    Please leave feedback on the new studio and camera angle. The microphone is closer so I think the audio is better. However, I think I need a bit more light on my face and maybe less on the back wall to let the RGB lights stand out more.
    Some people wanted links to some of the items shown:

    If you're looking for something to bring the backdrop to life, something like peel-and-stick faux brick tiles will recreate the look of your old space fairly inexpensively. If you're looking to keep the new space distinct, you can also get peel-and-stick wood panels, which will similarly add character to the backdrop while making it clear that you're in a new space.

      Or he could simply use wallpapers. So much cheaper than any other solution, available in tons of patterns and if one gets bored of them, they can be replaced just as easy. Idk how expensive those may be in Australia, but here in Germany you can get awesome looking ones for 7-15€ at Tedox.

    • @marchingknight11
      @marchingknight11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SchwachsinnProduzent wallpaper is an option, but wallpapers lack texture, which is one of the things that made the brick wall so interesting.

      @SchwachsinnProduzent ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@marchingknight11 Wallpapers actually do have textures. You are usually limited to a maximum of one or two millimetres difference between high and low spots. But fake brick wallpaper looks surprisingly convincing from a distance, especially on photos.

      I actually used these “dummy brick” walls on a build. You would just cut the sheet to size and peel in stick. It costed me like $50+ an easy install.

    • @PTEC3D
      @PTEC3D ปีที่แล้ว

      Or get some sound damping tiles and use double sided easy release tape to set them in a pattern at the back of the shot? Can't hurt acoustics, adds some texture, and packs of those ten or a dozen of them can be had for cheap online these days, comes off without damaging paint if it doesn't look right.

    Interesting under house area. Here in Kansas, U.S.A., we need to test for Radon gas seeping into living spaces from basements and crawl spaces (like your under house area). We would use a rubber or
    vinyl membrane to seal against the earth and sides of the structure. Then vent the space under the membrane to the exterior air, high in the air. Radon is heavier than air, odorless, colorless, and carcinogenic. For basement, we vent the underside of the basement slab floor.
    Wishing you well in your endeavors!

    I plan on moving in the next few months and this is a great video for ideas on how to set things up when that finally happens. My 3D printing area started off pretty simple - I found an old microwave stand at a thrift shop and put my Ender 3 on top, the filament storage box in the center open shelf, and other parts and things in the cabinet below - but after getting an Artillery Sidewinder I ended up needing more furniture to hold everything. The record player stand the Sidewinder lives on isn't as handy as the microwave stand, where I now have multiple plastic totes just sitting around holding parts and supplies, and thanks to Prime Day I'll be getting my first resin printer real soon...lots of good ideas here, though, that I fully intend on stealing as necessary.
    Congrats on the move and thanks for the behind-the-scenes peek at the setup process!

    an improvement from my side would be a third spotlight, located behind you/the Prusa. the middle looks bare now so it would fill up the space quite well, plus you could work with some color accents for presentation in the future.
    Also, an idea would be something like a subscriber counter, like many other TH-camrs have already, located between the X3D sign and the Playbutton since that space is also quite empty. this could also be fixed by relocating the teaching tech logo. it would be more prominent than what I support since it's a good and beautiful eyecatcher.

Especially in six months when I am sure AU heats up quite a bit.

Quick tip about the table saw or any saws, have the blade protrude past the thickness of the material that is being cut just a bit. That way more teeth of the blades are removing material than just a few blades.

    Safety warning for your basement dig: Many places use that heavy plastic liner with rocks over it for a big reason. Radon (probably not in Aus) and moisture control. It's called a vapor barrier and you should make sure you replace with a suitable replacement for your needs. If you don't, you'll get mold problems in not too visible areas of your walls and it'll be just an ugly and unhealthy mess after the years pass.

Please go wild. paint the wall green, make the light uniform, and show a green screen effect on the whole background. Could be "augmented-reality" like a virtual poster, or just a plain image for ambiance, maybe even animations...

    Hey Michael! Love the new space - how many hours have gone into moving just the maker space part of your old studio?
    If I had any suggestion for adding character to your new primary studio filming backdrop: add a bunch of small shelves! This would kill 2 or 3 birds with one stone - you can use the shelving as additional storage space while also functioning to display maybe some of the cooler pieces you’ve created, funny failures, rare/specialized/odd tools or machines etc (you could also add LED lighting under the shelf pointing at the wall as well!). There’s a lot of flexibility and variation in shelving, so it could do a lot towards adding character and color to the wall while also providing more storage!

    Are you thinking of concreting the underfloor power tools space? Also - are you going to make sure there's a really strong door to secure the tools? Asking because power tools seem to be crook magnets, they love them some of someone else's hard won equipment. I left a cheap battery drill, just sitting on a drum, and not all that easy to spot from the road, went inside to have a cuppa and bingo - gone in less than 15 minutes. I now put my tools back in the shed and lock the door when I have smoko.

    Could you try to build a printer from all the stuff you have just lying around? I'd love to see that as kind of a challenge - even if you don't succeed it would be interesting to see how you tackle any occuring problems during the build itself!
    Edit: The new space looks awesome btw!

    I suggest you paint the back wall a bright green...something that doesn't match anything else in the room...then you can green screen the back wall to be what ever you want... to start with it could be simple brick but in the future you would use it like a monitor showing off things in the background of your videos.

    Any chance someone knows of a US equivalent of that Bunnings Rack-It system? That looks like a perfect solution for a garage makeover I've been hoping to tackle soon.
