Maybe there are more beautiful castles than Heidelberg. BUT people of culture and history will choose Heidelberg over the others. Its way better with this awesome view and all the other interesting things around. You can spend a couple of days in this beautiful city.
@DWTravel should have mentioned that Schwetzingen castle is just a 15mins drive from Heidelberg. So, tourists can easily combine visiting both. I live just a 3 mins walk from Schwetzingen castle main entrance ...
trust me, HD ruin is not as good as Place 2 and 3. I am from HD, Schwetzingen and Ludwigsburg are way better. The HD castle lifes more from the beauty of the city and the forest around. It is worth to see, but boring whitout the other elements.

Fun fact #1 and #3 are located just a good 15 minutes away from each other...
#3 was built because the guy who reigned over #1 abandoned the city and built a new castle in Schwetzingen.
