How to Remove Spare Tire on a Chevy Silverado

  • As you can see here, Chevy decided they had to turn something so easy and basic into a nightmare for someone on the side of the road! I was lucky and got to work on the garage floor. I can't imagine trying to use that jack on the dirt.
This was such a fiasco, that I ran out of time and never made it out to cut firewood in my stylin' green chainsaw pants.

It took me 15 minutes to remove the whole mechanism from the frame. I spent almost 2 hours trying to do it the right way and trying to squeeze the secondary latch with a set of pliers buy removing the license plate and going in from the back.
If you choose to take a second and get under your truck, it only takes a few minutes to romve the whole assembly. (you only have to take out one bolt and then slide it off the frame)
Please thumbs up this so others will know because it will be a big time saver to skip all the screwing around I did.

Terrible system. We just tried to change one for a friend. Three of us with limited tools. He's still sitting on the roadside... still waiting for assistance. Figured he should never reinstall it, or buy a new spare tire/rim and abandon the stock one under the truck.

After struggling for too long with my 2012 Silverado I discovered that the guiding tube was off alignment with the lowering nut. I had to push it back on through the spare underneath. After lowering it down, I noticed the collar to hold the tube on the nut had come loose. I had to snap that back on too. If everything is aligned correctly, it should be as easy as pushing the socket end of the rod on the nut and cranking it down and up. Hope this helps.
P.S. forget the jack part of taking the tire off. Just lower it to the ground, lift an end of the tire and pull the plate through vertically by one side.

I believe those two metal sections with the jack are supposed to be wheel chocks. Everything I have see has indicated as much. The jack on my truck (2008 Silverado) also extends enough (if you keep on cranking it) to raise the truck high enough to remove a tire. Of course, that might not be the case if you have changed anything on your truck (lift kit, larger tires, etc.). I have never met anyone that had a Silverado that would have tried to place the jack on those two pieces to gain height. That would be crazy and dangerous.

I can fully understand how the secondary latch could get hung up. And I agree, engineering has come up with a ridiculous solution. My question is, when it IS working properly, or when it isn't stuck, what makes it release to begin with? i.e. under normal circumstances, what function of lowering the spare is supposed to cause that latch to release?

WOW! Thanks so much!! I have been under my brothers truck for hours trying to figure out how to get this thing down to put the spare back up there. I guess they did this so people like me that don't read the manual will take it in and they can make a quick buck off of you. I took mine in and they told me the wire was twisted inside the case thing and they would have to take it off and order a new one...SOB's.

The latch will turn sideways and come through. I took a zip cut on the grinder and cut the hook off. I spent 1.5 hours in the rain on the side of I95 trying to get the spare down b4 I suceded.
I especially like the step in the manual @ #5 where they tell you to crank it up until it clicks twice. This has nothing to do with removing the tire, but does ruin the lifting winch. Then at the end in step 15 they say go buy a new winch. I have a ratchet strap holding mine up now.

For those of you who would rather read how to do it:
Step 1: Get your spare kit out
Step 2: get your truck key
Step 3: wait for the wind to blow 3.78 MPH south
step 4: find a tree with a rock under it
step 5: pick up the rock and hope it has a note under it
step 6: do as the not says and wait in the terminal
Step 7: now that you just flew to china, look for a chang lee
    Step 8: learn mandarin
Step 9: once you find Chang lee, tell him in mandarin (and this only) “The bird has a broken wing”
Step 10: once Dr. Lee gives you the coordinates, go to them (they are different for everyone)
Step 11: once you arrive at the coordinates, there should be a spare tire waiting for you there ( if there is no tire, you found the wrong Chang lee and will need to repeat step 7)
Step 12: return to your truck (if it is still there) and replace your flat with the spare.

Mine got rear ended, the Secondary was damaged (the body shop never caught it) and the entire tire lowering assembly had to be replaced (of course, this was waaay after I got the truck fixed)

Before watching this video I took my 2007 Silverado to my mechanic and had them torch the cable holding the spare upI then fabricated a holder for the spare tire to put back where it came from using the existing cable set-up.What a terrible design this is. 11-18-15 Scott

Did they do this so it can't be stolen? I had a F150 to where the spare tire was stolen, so I just put a chain and lock on it. None of this crazy stuff was required to get it down. They meant well, but damn if they couldn't of come up with something else.

John I had a early 90,s F150 that was easy to remove. After watching this I’m wondering about buying one to mount to my Chevy and lock it like you did

Bought my 98 Silverado used. Did not come with the part that goes down the tube to lower tire. All that I have tried are too wide to fit in the tube! ugh

Thank you. Ask me how I know. What a great video, I appreciate it since this is what I'm doing today. From now on the spare is going to be riding in the bed. Safety overkill.

Holy crap! I was trying to help a guy with one these. He didn't have manual or even know where the jack and tools were. (It used to people that owned trucks knew how to use tools.) I had baby bottle jack, but I didn't how it would have helped. This seriously makes dropping the spare on my Dodge mini-van look simple. Any idea if there is a way disable the secondary and still have it hold together in storage?

Not sure. If the spare seems like its hung up, then it probably does.
