Boogie Woogie Piano: 'Left Hand Primer' Tutorial

  • I decided to put together this lesson while working on another up-coming boogie woogie tutorial that I'm working on.
    I firmly believe that a rock-steady left hand is absolutely essential to good boogie woogie. If it's uncoordinated, lacking rhythm or loose in any way, your piece is going to fall apart.
    In this tutorial I teach a specific left hand pattern (which will be used in my next boogie woogie tutorial) and give you a bunch of tips to make it good! Plus, a very simple right hand over the top, just to challenge you to maintain that unwavering left hand while doing something else.
    Good luck... and watch out for the follow-up!

    Showing the desired end before beginning!! So nice to see that on a video for once!!!! A large number of adult learners NEED to know where they're going first. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense to them and they get lost. THANK YOU!!!!!

    Love this tutorial. I really like that you tell us what to do rather than assuming we'll see what/how to play by rewinding the video. And explaining exactly where to play left and right hands together really helps me to make progress and feel confident that i am practising it in the right place.
    Excellent tutorial thanks.

    Amazing! I've been playing the piano on and off for about 6 months and the last few weeks have been particularly 'off'. I've only been playing classical and some beginner jazz improvisation and I was starting to get bored. Then today i found this video and tought I would give it a try really quick. Three hours later and I'm still sitting on my piano bench swinging left to right like a child :D. Boogie Woogie is absolutely awesome and this tutorial is too: no showboating, only speeding up once to show the end goal, clear and concise instructions that are well articulated.

    Wow, great video - I am a very "adult" newbie learner and have been practicing a good part of the day after watching. The mind is an interesting thing. It can go on a run, almost in autopilot, and then when it refocuses, my fingers go haywire. Interesting I could see speeding up through this lazy Saturday. Quite quite quite a bit more practice, though. Not like I could play for money, yet : )
    Update: Getting there with this. Just an issue of repetition and time.

    • @damodaraomalley3974
      @damodaraomalley3974 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree, had my keyboard about one month now, first ever instrument. This will be the second ever proper tune after learning the boogie number one two days ago.
      Can I ask how are you going with this tune now?

    • @boldcautionproductions9203
      @boldcautionproductions9203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@damodaraomalley3974 This is my go-to riff, now. This video served as a core lesson.
      I resumed lessons a month ago (over Zoom) and the things my instructor is teaching me, I use this riff to practice. For instance, simply transposing into different keys gives you practice on something like 5 different levels. Get into keys other than straight-up C, get your fingers on those black keys.
      I picked up some confidence with this, if I keep practicing, things happen.
      If you just keep practicing it, other rhythms start emerging, you develop finger independence and hand independence.
      As a training tool, at all, for piano, it has really worked.
      And, if anyone is around to listen, it is a great sound - less monotonous.
      Hope this helps...

      Thanks for your kind words :) Glad you've found it helpful. It's effectively a simplified version of the left hand part from Boogie Woogie Stomp. I've done a part 1 tutorial of that - th-cam.com/video/Fqj_7VennLM/w-d-xo.html. I'm honestly planning to do tutorials for the rest of the song... just haven't got round to it yet!
