Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling Water Dispenser Lights Flashes On and Off
If your refrigerator starts making a clicking noise where it sounds like the compressor is clicking on and off, and / or the lights on the water dispenser is flashing on and off, then you may have a faulty main control board.
This video will show you how to remove and replace the main REFRIGERATOR CONTROL BOARD W10310240.
If you call a repair company, they must be able to get the part, which most do not stock, plus it will cost upwards of $300 for the board brand new. I purchased a repaired board that I found on eBay sold by fixyourboard.com.
The part arrived in about a week and worked as soon as I installed it. The company also backs it up with a 2-year warranty.
Watch the video to find out more.
Once the part is installed, you will need to program the board. Here is a copy of the instructions that came with my board:
Part number W10213583 has been replaced with part number W10310240 now. The programming instructions should be the same for both control boards though.
    Programming Mode:
NOTE: The Program Code is located on the Serial Plate on this unit after the word Code.
    1. Press and hold the Door Alarm Keypad DoorAlarm.
    2. Press and hold Freezer Temperature Down Keypad.
    3. Release the Door Alarm Keypad DoorAlarm and wait 3 seconds.
    4. The control will display PE to indicate the programming mode.
    5. Entry is confirmed by pressing the Freezer Temperature Down Keypad once more.
    6. The control will display the current Program CODE. This value should be validated with the Program CODE printed on the unit serial plate.
NOTE: If the Program CODE is correct, the Programming Mode is exited by pressing Door Alarm Keypad for 3 seconds.
    7. Press the Refrigerator Temperature Up Keypad or Refrigerator Down Keypad to change the digit value with each key press.
    8. The decimal point indicates the selected digit. Press the Freezer Temperature Up Keypad to select the next digit.
    9. Once the desired Program CODE is entered, press and hold the Freezer Temperature Down Keypad until the Program CODE begins flashing indicating it has been saved.
NOTE: If you attempt to enter an invalid Program CODE the control will not save the new code, but will beep. (The unit will NOT run with a Program CODE of 0000). Once the Program CODE has been saved the Programming Mode is exited by pressing any key. If the new code is incorrect this process should be repeated. The Programming mode can be exited at any time by pressing Door Alarm key for 3 seconds or will exit if unattended for four minutes.

Yet another big thank you for this video. My Whirlpool French Door fridge (serial number GI5FSAXVY02) was acting up: pressing any button on the control panel, dispensing water or ice, would cause all the LEDS to blink. Then later started behaving like yours did: it would come on, then stop, then come on, then stop. I was panicked because I live on the top floor of an old building with a very narrow staircase and when I bought the fridge I actually had to hire a crew with a CRANE to get the thing in through a window! Replacing it was going to be a huge, expensive production. This video saved my ass! Ordered the part on Amazon and it was here in 2 days and replacing was a 10 minute job. Fridge is now working like new! PHEWWW! I won 50 “dad points” for fixing my own fridge. :-) Thanks again!

Mr Rose, you just saved me a bunch of money and repairs and loss of frozen food, mostly meats. Saw this vid and tried buying board online but minimum 2 day wait. Called three local, highly rated on HomeAdvisor App appliance repair and got quotes of $550 and up. Found a local appliance parts store (Coast Appliance Parts, in OC, CA) and found a new board for under $250. Installed and my fridge had the same code as yours, 1617, but your sequence didn’t work and my board did not come with instructions; however, played around with using the same procedures but with a different button that the “door alarm” and viola! All zeros and used your instructions to program with great success. Thank you!

Same fridge here but mine is silver /grey, and code is 1617 too. My display had gone off and if I pressed one button all leds would light. I hastily replaced the front panel W101625... pcb and same problem, then I see your video and find out there is a Main pcb, and you mention that some capacitors fail, am into electronics, well I removed that rear Main pcb and visually all capacitors looked fine but then I tested the capacitors with an in-circuit cap tester, and I found that all its four 10uf 35V caps were open; C31, C32, C45, and C?. I replaced the four with 10uf 50V caps, placed the pcb back on the fridge and sure enough!! The fridge turned on fine, Freezer at 6 and Refri at 45, Water led, and I reset the filter. I did not even had to program it! The larger capacitors were fine. Thank you Richard, and may god bless you too.

It's not the techs fault for not being able to fix the main board. Usually, the company they work for will not allow them to take the time to do so. It's not worth the time and money for the company for their tech to spend on fixing the board with even the slightest possibility of something being wrong or it not fixing it. Customers get mad at the techs when majority of the time it's the companies policy they must follow in order to keep their job.

This is definitely my issue, as the control board is going on and off just like you said yours was. Only mine stopped working all together for quite a while today, and then started going on and off again this evening. We've already ordered the new control board, but is it best to just unplug the fridge altogether until it comes? I've got a few days to wait until it arrives. Am I possibly risking damaging my compressor in the meantime having it plugged in? I only ask, because although I removed basically everything I do have a couple things that won't spoil such as ice packs in the freezer which hasn't quite lost all its cold yet.

Another point:Reminder: Don't leave your frig-doors shut - mold will grow - within days - in the frig…..

I hope your fridge is ok now, but for anyone interested the larger three caps are 270uf 35V I remember, but the four 10uf 35V were the bad open ones. I tested all incircuit but only one of the four 10uf35V tested open, the other three 10uf tested like 0.25 ESR Ohms which I know is too good for an old 10uf, so I desoldered each of the 10uf caps and sure enought they tested open, greater than 20 ESR Ohms, these should be around 2 ESR Ohms. An open cap shows no signs of being bad visually, a shorted cap does as it may bulge or burn. I replaced with 10uf 50V caps, 50V caps because the voltage these caps are handling am sure is too close to their 35v rating, hence their life will be shortened, so use 50V.

Irama Vivenes m Either the second control board is defective or possibly a power surge caused it to blow. Call your technicians back out again. Since it's only been 4 days, they should fix it again at no extra charge.

Still helpful in 2020 for sure! Our KitchenAid had some of the common symptoms of a bad HV circuit board. Contacted Megan at www.fixyourboard.com and they overnighted a re-manufactured board. They even were able to configure it for my refrigerator's code. Popped in the new board, re-attached the connectors, plugged it in and VOILA - it runs like new. It looks like new too since we cleaned the entire inside and out. All that's left to do is to return the original board for a $75 rebate. Thanks so much for your video. And I highly recommend FixYourBoard.

Lol “it’s so easy anyone can do it” followed by “I’m not going to replace it cause I don’t want to go through that again”
