Mick Ronson was someone who never truly got the recognition for the work he did turning Bowie into a megastar. Perhaps now with this upload the world will know. Thanks

Little too late he should have been compensated fairly when he was with Bowie he made his music so much better.

Agreed, same thing as well for Angela- Davey Jones' Footlocker wouldn't have been anywhere & he knew that very well.
Bowie was very contrived - like his Mum took him to pick out the new gear for the next Davey _?_.
Angela & 'Ronno' w/Tony Visconti basically built 'Him'.
Ronson would have been a smokin' replacement for The Pretenders' James Honeyman-Scott for as long as he could (I've said the same to & re GLJ's James Stevenson as well & the difference - James is still alive.

@pleasantvalleypickerca7681, mmmmmmaybe. Bowie was the real deal, but Ronno’s Les Paul and Marshall stack was one hell of a launching pad for Mr. Jones.

You can count on the fingers of one hand a guitarist who sounds like nobody else. Ronno was one of them. A genius and underappreciated at the time. History will prove without him Bowie wouldn't have sounded half as good! God bless you for the memories!

Love Mick Ronson. A legend in music and a legend to the people both knew him and loved him.
Ronson was the foundation that Bowie built on. Just compare the work Bowie did before, during and after his work with Mick ( as good as some of the early and later Bowie albums are).
Ronson’s production on the “Transformer” album is brilliant and timeless. And I love his first 2 solo albums as well. Great to see this.

I loved this, and I love Bowie and Ronson together. I cannot believe Ronsons salary on the road 30 quid a week, what a joke! I loved Bowies whole career pretty much, but his most powerful music was with Ronson. Its a shame Ronson never received the credit he deserved.

      I think it's called usury.
Plus the transient nature, international level, nothing really cost him cash outta pocket because DB wanted 'it' to look like that & so on.
This isn't new: I knew a guy from NYC working where & when I was in high school that played the Ziggy LP from the first song to the last on an Ovation Custom Legend- over & over hanging out with the 'cool' locals when he wasn't working (like a Karen Silkwood, carney-type) at the local Nuclear power plant.
Over & over, track to track. He knew that LP backwards. Apparently a big Ronson fan w/out pointing it out. Transformer also but not the same level.

This film’s fantastic; I never tire of watching it. Mick Ronson should’ve been a global superstar, not only because he’s right up there with the best guitarists EVER, but for his other phenomenal musical talents such as piano, violin and arranging. It breaks my heart that he was so relatively underrated during his too brief lifetime. He’s forever my Guitar God. Ronno forever! ♥️🎸♥️

Unfortunately, the ego that makes a great front man, also makes for a terrible friend, when times get tough. Jagger/Richards did the same to Mick Taylor. Morrissey with Rourke/Joyce. Even Ozzy, and Jake E Lee. There are many others. When you look at the sharks that circle this industry, its not really a great surprise that kill or be killed, was the order of the day. Now theres far less money to be made in the industry, hopefully the philosophy has changed, and the sharks move on.

That was great - provocative, tender, reflective, respectful, etc etc, making clear Mick Ronson's huge gift as a practical genius visionairy of sound, and while it raised many questions, the film clearly places Ronson front and centre in the rise and rise of David Bowie. Interesting that it was the deep metal motor of the north, with just the right amount of disturbo-glam, that gouged a place in the heteronorm American market, giving David the premiership platform from which he was able to conduct the rest of his ministry.

Later I read in creem magazine that mick ronson played and arranged all the music on that album, david just walked in and sang the lyrics ronno told him to. I still stream it once in awhile.

This is a wonderful documentary and I agree w all of the great , deserved praise that has already been said. He was a committed professional dedicated to his work which also kept him from the usual trappings so easy for rock stars. In interviews, though maybe a little subtle and modest , he is very fluent and articulate. A great, generous guy who was happy to let others be the stars while he quietly went about being the 'bricklayer' foundation in the band.

i was 11 when i heard the spiders album, changed me forever, i knew that getting on stage with a guitar in hand was almost everything to me as a kid, unfortunately success never came ,did get a contract offer , but too little too late, life got in the way by then unfortunately.
ronsons guitar work was not too complicated but it carried a ton of expression that to date no other performer comes close, ok maybe jimmi, he had great expression also ,but mick will always be my man.
if he's looking in,thank you for those great times in musical history mick , i had a great time also without the success, just performing was what always mattered to me.

'Wishful thinking' comes to mind based on the way he (DB) treated people who were integral to his climbs. 'Rungs' would be a good name of honesty for a DB band - '__ & The Rungs'. IF, IF DB took care of MR's family I believe it was out of guilt/obligation.
At 1:30/31:_>> Bowie sez Ronson somehow showed up at some point of every tour. What a coincidence‽
There're SO many little ego trips & insecurities mined in a duo, group situation. Many of them are just Ed: Plant-Jones {JPJ was the most talented multi-instrumentalist in Zep; Roger Waters was suspected of slights at Rick Wright, but Gilmour had a more gentle way of managing the same unit (3/4ths) & damned if Wright didn't mention an example of confirmation, ala: 'during an early (3/4ths Floyd) tour's show I got some part mixed up/wrong time & DG just turned & grinned & I knew it was going to be okay & it was fine from then on' type of thing. A LOT of groups need a taskmaster & others resent the same thing as a bad 'tude like- YOU work FOR ME- GOT IT‽
IT'S WHAT CHASED DANNY KIRWAN OUTTA FLEETWOOD MAC THANKS TO THE DRUNKEN FOREIGNER Bob Welch picking at a genuinely nice guy who had 3(±) good solo, post-MAC LPs but was a threat to the insecure drunk in California who was petty & got off being a bully in almost imperceptible ways- unless it's at YOU, YOUR WAY, IDEAS,... That's not constructive criticism, that's being foul & plucking at someone's insecurities mined in time w/ his own problems while the 'other' members are zinging along on self-feeding chemicals & a strong ego because they're all fine & the new one found YOUR weak spot & eventually it's not worth it & nobody else sees &/or cares or thinks it's an illusion or YOU'D speak up to it!
Kirwan was a nice guy from the stuff he says through his Solo LPs/tunes.
Matter of fact- he & Ronson could have had some straight ahead fun as a 2 guitarists band with a lot of good styles expanding on the base of the electric Blues, et al & during the same time. Good souls.
Btw- how'd DB get that mansion for 7£ /month please‽

Shameless treatment of Ronson. I love Bowie's music, always will, but the more I read it seems to me that he was a narcissist who used people all the way along to advance his career. He was extremely talented, nobody can deny that, but it seems that he was always focused on himself and used people to get along and then left them behind.

Bowie may have been Major Tom, but Mick, Woody and Bolder was the three stage rocket that blasted Bowie to stratospheric stardom.

David Bowie would of been a popstar but mick made him a true rockstar icon, at that time being a rockstar was the highest appraisal as a musician and looking back it still is! Mick is my favourite musician not just guitarist because he was the perfect musicians musician no ego and completely invested in what was he was called to do so valuable!

His work on Transformer was immense. Here was a guitarist who not only had a huge influence on one of the best rock artists, in my opinion, Bowie -but also on one of the other greatest rock artists- Lou Reed. Would they have had the careers they had without him? I would say yes, but isn't it hard to know?

And I put him up there with Hendrix and Van Halen as popular rock guitarists that took it to a higher realm.

Bowie had song ideas and lyrics and Mick composed the music.

Totally. Slicky could have been public enemy no. 1 as the first real replacement for Mick, but has never shown anything short of total respect and admiration towards him. Significantly, he was the only one to question the lack of official credit Ronno was accorded.

He never wanted the lead he was happy to be a great sideman and collaborator. He was a great producer also. He was just reaching his peak as a producer when he got sick. He was great with Dylan, Van Morrison and of course his long time partner Ian Hunter.
