Can agree. I once saw a lady cross the road and open the door to her older style white range rover without looking for any cars coming towards her. Not long after she put her foot down in the right lane to get in front of several cars.

Spot on review JM - you nailed it. - I live on the West Coast of South Africa just North of Cape Town where the Range Rovers are also almost a plague (along with Q7s, Q5s a smattering of Cayennes and the odd Macan) Here, in my countryside, the fan base is a tad less "school-run" and a bit more "weekend beach cottage or mountain-wine-farm-run". There's no doubt they are capable, but are probably still underutilised as even my 2017 Audi A4 can do the mountain wine farm run on a weekend. The Range Rover is seen here as the "LR Defender for the missus" which comes complete with its can of "Aerosol Spray on mud" which, if judiciously applied after dark on a Sunday, can have your work colleagues believing that you live a truly outdoors lifestyle. Your review nailed the mentality brilliantly. SS for the SAW? - That was inspired! Thanks again..

I like the Range Rover, primarily because it *really* annoys people who hate on SUVs (normally because they can't afford them) and it's distinctly less "2nd division footballer" than an X7, SQ7 or GLS. Not only less brassy, but more useful in mud, snow and wet grass, all of which cause the Germans to have a fit, or break, or just get stuck (and all of which we have in copious quantities round here)....It's also very practical - after the dogs have manked it up, you can hose it out just like a Defender......just make sure the carpet has time to dry before locking it though :D but.......10/10 to you for at least stepping up and testing your disinclination - nice one.

    • @markwright3161

I'm the same. For me it's the fact that Land Rover ensure all their vehicles are still very capable offroad making them still suitable for the offroader title, unlike so many of their competitors and their softroaders, in other words SUVs. To me the Ranger Rover isn't an SUV, I'd call it a 4X4 or offroader.
An SUV is the often only 2WD tubs that don't offer anything to society, they take the worst of an offroader, big, bulky, rubbish on road performance, and the worst of a car, no 'go anywhere' ability. I hate them too, along with crossovers, which are basically the same rubbish.
If you're transporting a lot on road, use an estate, if you have a bigger family, use an MPV/seven seater/converted van. No need for SUVs or crossovers. 4X4/offroaders should only be chosen if you need to drive out in the country where there's regular flooding, dirt tracks/lanes and the like.
      Apologies for the rant. :)

No problem with this diesel in London as it's Euro 6 compliant. It's diesels that are more than about 6 years old that are a problem. You will have to give it a motorway drive once a month to clean out the DPF though.

That’s highly debatable, Mercedes aren’t exactly the most reliable cars anymore. The Range Rover is pretty much the do everything car. They’re just not built very well.
There’s many reasons people buy Luxury SUVs now rather than luxury cars, the raised driving position is one of the main ones, it makes long distances more relaxing as you can see further down the road, obviously status is another, there’s a perception they are more prestigious. And some people genuinely need 4x4 and ground clearance. The RR used to be a slightly more luxurious workhorse for farmers but it’s now bought by people who used to buy an S class, 7 series etc.

What is the point of this vehicle? Is it a better luxury vehicle than an A8, S Class, etc? Not really. Is there any point in all the fancy off road tech? Not really. Do the off road bits make the luxury bits worse? Yes. Do the luxury bits make the off road bits less good? Massively, yes.
What's the difference between a Range Rover and a Discovery? They've both got silly wheels.

I have been seriously tempted by a full fat Range Rover recently...but I can't get my head around the fact that most seem to be driven by 'trophy women'. Usually blonde with sunglasses on the top of their head, married to a wealthy (ish) guy thirty years their senior. They are easily spotted, just look to see the Rangey parked illegally in the blue badge space, or the Rangey being driven in lane 2 of the motorway at 60mph..never deviating. Add in their famous unreliability and I'm only surprised they sell any. Like most Bentley's, these are what I call 'three year cars'. Any older than that and you're on your own with the never ending repair bills....

Nothing is in this league regarding status! Sorry but the Audi is a Audi not a RR. It’s a nice luxury SUV but its not a RR which is reflected in the price. It’s a more reliable car than the RR but no one cross shops a Audi with the RR.
RR customers are looking to make a statement whereas Audi is as conservative as it gets for a German SUV. The SQ8 is a bit more daring but its too is not a RR.
Lastly a well equipped RR has an interior that is unbelievable. The technology is not top tier but you don’t buy a RR for cutting edge technology. It’s just a statue symbol as this is not something you buy if you have to ask about the price. The people who buy these new don’t keep them. The second owner is the one who pays!

All the spec omissions are because JLR know their demographic. Whilst we all know that you can buy an SUV at half the price that is fully loaded with all the goodies, JLR know that their target customer would never look at those other brands, and therefore they can flog the customer many many expensive options that other manufacturers give as standard. Saying that though, I still regret selling my RR Sport and getting a fully loaded A8

i wonder how many people would notice if the 4wd stuff was removed.....its permanent because of history, usp's and marketing but i bet there are many who see it as unnecessary, would help the consumption/emissions to have a 2wd model or at least an on-demand system.

Greatly enjoy your content but I really wish someone would explain to me the black wheel obsession. Big donut spares? Lost your hubcaps? Bought the cheapest model? Machine finish to give some contrast can be beautiful but solid black ruins a car whatever the color. Anyway keep up the great work, best wishes for future success and thanks for not being obnoxious.

As the son of a DS7🤢 owner. It is nice to see JLR catching up with PSA. Only £40 grand more too!!! All for a badge that says “Range Rover”🤢. SUVs make me sick.

With cars like these taking so much room on our narrow roads, is it time for a size limit on cars? Or should we all just suffer the onslaught of SUVs on our side of the road?

Don’t speak too soon. Good job we are out of the EU I reckon the politburo in Brussels will get around to mandating this after they have finished putting the finishing touches on how bendy bananas should be that are imported from outside the bloc

@@philipbrit13 You realise the bendy bananas story was completely made up?
Odd use of 'politburo' as well, as there is perhaps no organisation that is more capitalist than the EU - it's even in the constitution.

Julian Evans Wether how bendy or not the fact that money is spent of this sort of legislation with so many other pressing matters such as fiscal restraint and budget auditing is a waste of resources. Regulation (EC) No. 2257/94
“””””This regulation requires that bananas as a minimum standard must not have "abnormal curvature",[5] although no definition or guidance was given about the degree of curvature that would be regarded as "abnormal". This led to various stories about an EU ban on curved bananas.[6] This has been frequently repeated by pro-Europeans and Euro-sceptics alike; the former tending to regard it as an apocryphal or misleading Euromyth[6] and the latter regarding it as an example of needless European bureaucracy.[7]
On 29 July 2008, the European Commission held a preliminary vote concerning the repeal of certain regulations related to the quality of specific fruit and vegetables that included provisions related to size and shape. “””””
