    I appreciate "excess deaths" part. Many death reports in the US list "covid death" including people on hospice (where you already have less than 6 months to live and are just made comfortable at home) or even at least one case where someone died in a motorcycle accident but had covid and was listed as a "covid death," which is a reason why Americans are particularly confused with our death toll because everything is very politicized and unclear.

    • @paulirving4866
      @paulirving4866 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ivanlagrossemoule Yes. Several months ago (October? November?) a Russian government minister answered a question about excess deaths by saying that they'd estimated that covid-19 contributed to 81% of the excess deaths reported in Russia up to that date. If correct, that meant that over four times as many people had died of covid-19 in Russia than the published number.
      The numbers published by the Russian government have not been adjusted, though. I think that anyone who has another condition, or who dies without being tested, is not counted as dying of Covid-19. So, when last year Daghestan was having six times as many people dying with pneumonia (a symptom of many diseases) than usual, their deaths were recorded as caused by pneumonia, with no underlying cause (e.g. bacterial infection, flu) given.
      One of my great-grandfathers died in November 1918. According to his family, he had flu - estimated to have killed 300,000 people in the UK that year. His death certificate says pneumonia. It was a common effect of the 1918 flu variety..

  • @mikemcardle7466
    @mikemcardle7466 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The numbers are skewed for many reasons. It's just what happens in politically and emotionally hyped-up times. It is a fact that "some" hospitals do not report accurately, instead opting to "not report" even though they're "supposedly" required to. People who have family members die from Coronavirus deliberately deny "why" their family died. It's not difficult to have a say in what gets put down on the "cause of death" portion of a death certificate, especially in these emotionally charged times. Under reporting and inaccurate reporting is common in stressful times as those who have worked in poorer countries can attest to. Many have died alone, in their homes on their living room floors, only to be found much later, unwanted, and without a friend or family member to claim the body.

      Mike - I would be highly surprised that non-professionals get a chance to determine what is on death certificates. This is important information for public health data and all jurisdictions/countries regard it highly. Doctors who in most (all?) jurisdictions DO understand the importance of this. The reporting of hospitals and various local health jurisdictions may have different ideas though. :-)

    In the USA it's probably grossly overstated. We counted everything as a covid related death and I personally know of people that had covid, were perfectly fine, died of their other conditions months later, and were still put down as a covid related death.
    We also know there's likely way more people that had covid that we don't know of, which would lower the proportional death rate. But even after all that, CDC still subtly noted that the majority of listed covid deaths did not have covid-19 as a primary cause of death. Which means a lot considering they slapped it on anyone that tested positive for infection of Sars Cov 2. A few even tested negative and they still counted them. Just another thing to get swept under the rug and be forgotten in history I guess.

  • @CoreyChambersLA

    The Economist is extremely irresponsible to keep peddling panic. Death toll is much less than what is widely reported. The United States has access to vaccines but it population is divided on its use. Misinformation once disseminated becomes entrenched due to confirmation bias. Local news agencies could give updates of local covid hospitalization and deaths divided by vaccination status similar to two sports teams. The two teams scores then are easily compared side by side. Beliefs changed when the information touches their community and the people they know by just presenting their local data in a meaningful and understandable way. If daily reports also include a two week look back trend people will have the data needed to make up their own minds.

    In terms of limiting covid-related deaths and serious hospitalization cases as well as the drain on medical resources that would otherwise available for treating non-covid patients , which policy is more effective ? - China's dynamic zero covid policy or the approach to coexist with the virus as adopted by most western countries
    Finally, Lancet Journal has validated the China’s claim (hereby refuting western propaganda) on its dynamic zero covid policy. Lancet has recently published a report titled “Estimating excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic analysis of COVID-19-related mortality, 2020-21”.
    This Lancet Report gives a scientific and independent assessment of covid-related deaths, country by country. These metrics eliminated all reporting and policy bias issues with a single Excess Mortality Rate and that same basis is applied universally to measure each country’s covid performance (Excess Mortality Rate) as well as their honesty in reporting covid deaths (Difference between the reported figure and estimated excess death).
    For the sake of clarity, let me pull out the covid stats from the Lancet Report for a few representative countries (2 western countries - UK and USA - and 2 Asian populous countries - India, China):
    1. Global stats. Reported covid death: 5.94m. Estimated excess death: 18.2m Reported covid mortality rate per 100k: 39.2. Estimated excess mortality rate per 100k: 120.3
    2. USA stats: Reported covid death: 0.82m. Estimated excess death: 1.13m Reported covid mortality rate per 100k: 130.6. Estimated excess mortality rate per 100k: 179.3
    3. UK stats: Reported covid death: 173k. Estimated excess death: 169k. Reported covid mortality rate per 100k: 130.1. Estimated excess mortality rate per 100k: 126.8
    4. China stats: Reported covid death: 4,820. Estimated excess death: 17,900. Reported covid mortality rate per 100k: 0.2. Estimated excess mortality rate per 100k: 0.6
    5. India stats: Reported covid death: 489k. Estimated excess death: 4.07m. Reported covid mortality rate per 100k: 18.3. Estimated excess mortality rate per 100k: 152.5
    If one subtracts the estimated excess death by the reported covid death, the difference is actually the underreported covid death per country. Doing so, I got 0.31m (USA), 13k (China) and 3.58m (India). These countries widely underreported their covid-related death counts according to the model used by Lancet. The worst is India with a hefty underreported amount of 3.58m, which is 7.3x of the reported amount. Next is the USA, a difference of 0.31m or 0.38x of the reported amount. For China, it is merely 13k underreported. It is correct, only 13k for China, a mere 5-digit number. As per the Lancet Report, China is the most honest country among the 3 countries; with India being the worst, and the USA in the middle of the road.
    If you compare the estimated excess mortality rate of each country against the global rate, you will realise that China immediately stands out as the country with the best pandemic performance in limiting deaths due to covid-19. What is shocking is that the USA, with its world-class medical technology and resources, did poorly versus the global average. India, a country with a similar population as China, also did poorly vs the global average. At the same time, India contributed 4.07m estimated excess death counts to the global total of 18.2m.
    It is worrisome to see the covid death cases rising in a number of Western countries (including the UK) that have lifted most, if not all covid measures.

    To look at excess death can not in its own be explained or connected to the virus itself. Because we know that the developing world have death that to some extent are due to poverty coming out of the lack of income due to lock downs and such which can not explain how deadly the virus is, just how deadly the policies of dealing with the danger of the virus, and the developed world have different results depending on strategy chosen in fighting this danger the pandamic have been classified to be. So this model looks at first glance to simplify the narrative.. the real danger is cancer and that is not a infectious but rather depends on lifestyle, so why do not we do more to fight cancer than any flu virus that will return now and again...

      Yes, every country did fail miserably in containing them, some took very little to no action because of various reasons. That does not mean that china could slip by easily saying hey we tried to keep it a secret and the world found out so its your responsiblity now!

      @@Fomites China is at much higher risk of a starting a pandemic due to high contact with natural reservoirs of pathogens that potentially can cause pandemics. If you hunt and consume wild animals that are high risk factors, or keep farm animals in close contact with them, eventually you risk starting a pandemic.
      Blaming them isn't that outlandish. Now of course there have been certain propaganda campaigns by certain politicians to push the blame to China instead of their own atrocious handling of the situation. China can't be blamed for everything either.

    I doubt very much this is accurate work. If the the death toll was 4 times higher that would be a number that is so large that the mass graves and cremations necessary could not be concealed . I think the death toll is higher than reported but not 4 times as high .
    Just going on the percentages if it was 12 million deaths then the hospital cases that would match to that number would have completely collapsed the hospital systems and that's not the case so far . Some countries are definitely lying about their stats and have worse death tolls than they report but 4 times higher across the whole World is a bit hard to believe .

      🤔🤔🤔pneumonia can be caused by a variety of different infectious agents. Most Covid-19 death would be classified under pneumonia. It’s like saying lung cancer isn’t a problem because cancer in general kills more people. It’s a very dumb comparison to be honest.
