I broke my ankle 2 years ago. Got a plate with 8 screws. A few months later with PT, I could walk, run, jump. But my ankle kept swelling badly after a long day of walking or work. After a year the pain got so bad. We got the hardware removed. Again going into PT, After three months the ankle got way better than it did before. No more swelling, more range of motion, no pain. the skin looked calm. Hardware removed was the best thing for me.
I’m going through this right now for the second time. I broke my ankle (spiral fracture) about 5 years ago and had a plate and 7 screws placed. I ended up having to get one screw out about a year or so later and now I just went in and got everything else out because I could feel another screw poking out. What was only supposed to be a 2 week recovery has turned into about 8 as they found arthritis and needed to fix torn tendons. I’m glad I did it because I wouldn’t have known about the arthritis and tendons but you are totally right with the emotional side. I was out of work for 4 weeks and I feel like a HUGE burden to my partner. I know it will get better but in the moment, it sucks!! Thanks for this video and highlighting what it’s like.
@@technominds4615it w somewhere between 4-6 weeks. My last surgery was supposed to be a 2 week recovery but once they opened me up they found a lot more issues. It was a year of recovery all together between physical therapy and having to get different methods of braces in stages.
I rather take the emotional toll than to be in pain physically and psychologically over long run anytime. That's how determined I was to get the hardware out. And yes...I feel great afterward and motion is alot better most importantly no pain when it's cold out!
Thank you, just knowing what to expect helps a lot. I’m having the hardware removed in a couple days (after 11 months) because of lack of improvement in my range of motion. Hope to get my RoM back soon.

Hey from aus! I just broke my tib and fib last Thursday and I’m just looking through your videos and it’s amazing how long it takes for all this to heal even after 8 years! Guess it’s a long road ahead was planning to get married in nov soo hopefully I have no complication!

Second comment 😂 So I just had my surgery yesterday afternoon and now the anesthesia has def washed a away so I’m in a lot of pain rn. Found out yesterday that I was wrong I wasn’t having ORIF on my ankle but my Fibula. But I do have 1 really Important question, Would removing hardware cause Arthritis in later years? Pls answer
I have three plates and 13 screws in my ankle, I also needed a bone graft, it’s been 3 yrs since I got this hardware, I’m going to look into getting this out this year, it really messed up a lot of my activities I used to do, I basically am in pain with every step I take, but just grin and bear it. My range of motion stinks, and I have neuropathy on top of all that, completely sucks. Hopefully I’ll find a doctor that can help me.
I am 17 and im having my ankle plate insetred tomorrow and I'm a bit overwhelmed. i also have some questions like 1. is it ok to take the plate out 1 or 2 years after getting it done? 2. how much did removal cost for you? 3. would removing the plate cause arthritis in the later future? 4. how was the pain on a level of 1-10 after getting it removed? 5. I heard that the hole from the removal would make the bones much more weak and fragile id it true? and if not would the holes be filled back up fast? Sorry for asking so much questions.
Hi im a 16 yo male and had my ankle surgery 5 months ago today (you can see how it looked right after the accident, ive posted a video). i dont know the name of my fracture but all the doctors that looked at the xray told me i messed it up pretty bad. but i actually feel relatively good about it and one thing i noticed is that when im in shoes it feels almost normal (i think because its warm inside the shoe..?). i have like a cold feeling mostly in my big toe and also stiffnes in my big toe mostly when its cold and sometimes burning. i will get the (3) screws out in 7 months and im kind of scared of nerve damage or smth during the second OP.. your videos really make me think more positive though because i value that i can run after 5 months more :) thanks!! sry for the a bit weird english im from germany edit: also i forgot that i sometimes have the feeling (i know it sounds weird) that someone just punshed hard at my inner ankle (broke my right ankle) when ive used it more than usual. and i still have bruising under my inner ankle and above it where it actually broke. it was very hard especially because i missed the whole summer :,) again, your video really help being positive about the situation
Hello )) Thanks for sharing. Just want to ask you if the surgeon removed some nodules on the damaged tissue and whether osteophytes were removed aswell ? Or they simply removed hardware and that's it ? Will appreciate your answer.
Had my metalwork out yesterday. Already pain free from waking up from surgery and no nerve block given, l checked 😂🤣 Today l am walking about a little stiff but no pain, no crutches and very little bruising or swelling. Gone is the constant ache and burning l had from the screws n metal plate. Wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Although l hope l never have too. No brainer for me. Not taken a single painkiller either
If more of us (those with hardware removal) come out to talk like this we can definitely shut the doctors up. Those guys don't want us to take it out period. Question we need to ask is between the doctors and patients who is the one in pain and need to feel good again?
I'm 8mo out from pilon fracture surgery, surgeon just released me because the bones are finally healed. I have a nerve that gets very angry in certain positions. So he left me the option to have the hardware removed to see if that would help. I'm considering it but will need my tibial plateau fracture on the opposite leg to be healed enough to tolerate my ankle hardware removal recovery. I'm glad he left it open ended.
What was the pain like in PT. I broke my ankle over 2 months ago and my second post op is on Monday, so I’ll hopefully be starting PT soon. What should I expect? And what did you do to help with that?
There were different aches and pains in different parts of my foot/ankle/leg. But honestly, it was nothing compared to those first few days post-op, and it really just felt good to be making progress!!
