I shopped at her store on Belmont (North side of Chicago) all the time. Love her store. Still own a kimono I bought there. Told my father about shopping there and meeting her. He thought it was the coolest thing. Also bought dishes, a paper lamp (long gone). Told my younger brother who she was when I brought him there but he had no clue as to who I was talking about. Great video!

In the nineties and early 2000 I passed by her business on Belmont near Clark street every day. I wish I had known.
How horrible that she is mistreated by both the Japanese and the Americans and had to wait 30 years for redemption.

New sub here. Came over from Lamont. Growing up I always were interested in the curiosity of those who passed on in the orbituaries and cemeteries and the stories their lives held. I used to think something was wrong with me for being interesting in such as a teen being different from the others. When I found Lamont I felt like I wasn't alone and now I have found your channel. Ahhh! You saw Erica's Angel! I don't recall her last name, but her name was Erica. She died about 10 years of age from cancer and her parents commissioned sculptor Lena Toritch to create a bronze statue of a guardian angel leading Erica on her way to Heaven. I think she died around 2010, but I might have it wrong. Golly, can't think of her last name either. That's annoying.
But it's a beautiful statue that's been said to have aided in her parents grieving. Google search photos show it decorated with bracelets, beads, and flowers at various times throughout the year, so they and friends visit still.

She could have refused to do any of this stuff and served in prison in Japan instead, she took the easy path and worked with Japan. She got a light punishment for that one serious incident. Maybe she is demonized too much but she had a choice and her choice was to work with the enemy in a military capacity (mentioning the destroyed ships).

One day I asked our police chief why he thought there were so many and much more in FL. than in N.Y. state. He told me it is because so many of them are uninsured and if they can't get them on the charge of leaving the scene or injuring someone they can at least get them for no insurance. Most of these people aren't man or woman enough to own up to what they did. Great video again.

    • @FacesoftheForgotten
      @FacesoftheForgotten  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s actually a very good question. And I don’t know. It’s just an American thing maybe, I guess, where people are so afraid they’re going to be forgotten that they do it themselves before hand.
You should look at the tomb of Roland Burris, an Illinois politician at a cemetery I was just at.
      www.findagrave.com/memorial/32723798/roland-wallace-burris
He built a huge monument to himself, and the epitaph was five paragraphs of all his accomplishments. Funny because I was about to include him in my video, he’s right next to Jesse Owens the famous Olympic athlete of 1939, the sprinter, and then I said “I think he’s still alive, that Roland Burris”.
And sure enough, he is--I’ve never seen anything like it.
Narcissism? Maybe, and we don’t want to just say that’s only American’s, but... 🤣😉

@@SquarepegASR - Well as an architect, my guess would be soil conditions. They vary greatly here in Chicago from one area to another.
Some areas are very firm with Compact sand, and other places are more silty. The glaciers moved through here many many years ago and deposited all sorts of stuff, and in the end I’m guessing it’s all soil conditions.
I know there’s been no blasting or anything like that. It’s probably not vandalism, it’s basically most of the cemetery.

I’m sure you’ve seen those conditions in hilly cemeteries.

@@FacesoftheForgotten That makes sense. It’s a shame that the soil condition is unstable. It will only get worse with time. When I am in cemeteries, and I see things like that, I just want to fix them. I found out years ago, I can’t. Lol. And now, at almost 60 years old, with a bad back, I definitely can’t straighten a gravestone. We had a gentleman in our area that used to restore stones. I had helped him a few times. The last time I helped him, I had found a grave with only the base to the stone and it was buried. Most people wouldn’t have noticed it, but I knew it was there. He and I went back and dug it up and replaced and leveled it. We had permission to do so, as well as probe for the grave. Sadly, he passed away from cancer not long after. No one in the community does such a thing anymore. I used to photograph for findagrave several years ago. I am hoping to do that again someday. I appreciate the work you do, and the respect you have while doing it.

Aloha! I was witness to the prejudice that some Americans felt toward the Japanese, especially from my Mom. My Mom was 10 living in a house right on the water, on Pearl Harbor peninsula, the day that the bombings happened. She, her parents, & my uncle, all hid in the sugar cane fields for 3 days. They later stayed at my Great Uncle's home until the Army confiscated it for operations. My Mom's older Brother reported to Pearl Harbor during the bombing, but was not injured. My Mom really disliked mainland Japanese, she refused deal with them during the Real Estate boom in the 80's as she owned her own company. One day, she scattered a group of a dozen or more Japanese visitors, as they were crossing a road! I was screaming, "Mom SLOW DOWN!!! That was when I knew that she truly had a severe dislike for them, even when she was in her 60's, I personally grew up with many friends of all ethnicities here in Hawaii. I believe(besides my dearly departed Mom), Hawaii is the least prejudice state in the union. Fascinating video!!😊🤙

It’s interesting that you mention that, because when I was in my late 20s, I was at the golf course with my Dad- in the pro shop, and there were a lot of Asian men golfers, huddled together staying to themselves, of course not speaking English. Some old white guy blurted out (very loud): “Look at those JAPS”. I was kind of stunned.
The guy behind the counter said: “We don’t call them that anymore”. And that guy just shrugged.
I saw a lot of racism growing up. Even against Jews. Of course blacks. Thank God I went to an integrated high school, and my parents were not racists.

@@FacesoftheForgotten Aloha F.O.T.F.! Here in Hawaii, we're what we call "mixed plate" I went to school with every ethnicity, and (strange but true), in Hawaii in the 60's & 70's, "haoles" pronounced "howl- Lees"(white people) were actually the minority, and were picked on in school,(not so much these days, thank goodness).Other than the Japanese racism, my Mom had friends of all ethnicities, as I do, including the Japanese!😊

Hey I can’t find your other comment here, I could view it but it doesn’t show up, weird technical issue with You Tube, but anyway, on me not getting hurt. Well, all I can say is I’ve made it this far I still have a few of my nine lives left I think, twice I was almost killed by polar bear who was stalking me in the Arctic on my bushplane search for the Franklin expedition for 15 years bushpilotdhc.blogspot.com/
And then a little over three years ago I was almost killed in a plane accident, a vintage torpedo bomber that I had bought flying back with a crew-mate, exploded over the White Mountains of Arizona we had a parachute and survive and get out of the wilderness. www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/ww2-airplane-crash-chicago-man-jumps-out/149721/%3famp
But that would be terrible if I fell through and got killed -after all I’ve been through, to be killed in a mausoleum accident ha ha Ha!

I really don't remember her name . This happened more than 30 yrs ago . Those days there was a way females drivers were getting robbed while waiting for the green light . A guy would brake the passenger side window with a rock or other object and grabbed the woman's purse . There was even a name for this kind of robbery . The young medical student was driving down the street by the University , I think at night . She was found dead the next day near the Univ. in an area known as " the yards" or something like that , close to the Univ. . Days later a teen confessed to the police that he and I think four other teens saw her by herself at her car waiting for the light to change . Not only did they brake her window , but also kidnapned her . Took her to the "Yards" and all of them took turns to rape her . According to the teen that confessed to the police , one of them picked up a big rock and hit her head with it and they left her there . The police said that her skull had been crushed . I think that with this account somebody will be able to give you more info . Thank you for replying .

It's a sad story the way the US authorities treated her. She refused to renounce her American citizenship despite pressure from the Japanese, which made her an enemy alien and would have made things very difficult during wartime. She smuggled food and medical supplies to malnourished Allied prisoners, and would have been in big trouble if she was caught. It's crazy how anyone could have thought she was a traitor, she deserved a medal not jail and losing her US citizenship. I admire her stoicism and that she didn't let it leave her bitter and defeated. RIP Iva.
