THIS STORY:
In September of 1958, government employees with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation willfully dug up, desecrated and stole human remains and sacred artifacts from the Bad River Ojibwa people of the Lake Superior Chippewa Tribe.
I visit the northern Wisconsin bridge location over the Bad River where this all happened. Then we all head off to the Odanah Cemetery to pay our respects to those good people there.

I am also now, for the first time, bringing subscribers up-to-date on more of my personal background. I have been a historian, arctic explorer and seaplane pilot for 20 years, spending 15 of those years solo. searching for the 2 famous 3 masted ships, the ships' crews' remains - and the tomb of Sir John Franklin. 129 men were doomed to starve for over 3 years on the pack ice and on King William Island, Nunavut CA. For this upcoming episode, I am going to bring in some video clips and images from over 10 years ago when I discovered 2 separate tombs while alone on western King William Island. One body was that of and Inuk, or possibly a fur trader. The other tomb that I had found has been informally identified as one of the Franklin sailors who froze and perished.

Unfortunately, there is no news or information out there on this terrible event - except reference to the truck collision accident, and the apology from the State of Wisconsin D.O.T. back in 2010. I wish I could have told more of this important story. Maybe through distribution of this episode, people who were there, or in the know, will come forward.

I fear the truth of what they did.they have no shame.what they did was wrong. People loved ones whose graves they robbed for artifacts.didnt have a heart they probably was sold either privately, on the black market. Or maybe they kept some.its just sad and heartbreaking. The bones and relics should be given back to the native people,so that they can be laid to rest!
Absolutely. But who knows what the Wisconsin DOT did with it? For all we know, they may have been sent to a dump, there was no respect for Native American lives or history. They were on about the same level in society as Black people. If, by some miracle the remains & artifacts are available, they need to be returned immediately. The relics may have been sold off to collectors.

Problem comes into play when museums define such "objects as part of the collection", further backed by their "mission statements", and regulations stipulated by the American Alliance of Museums with deaccessing "their" collections. This mess is a travesty all around further backed by influential benefactors yearning to place their names on an object or location.

i CAN SEE why most indians dispise the white men and it makes me so mad how the government has treated the native people very sad.

Houses are spirit houses built over with a hole so spirit can come and go. When house fully disintergrates then the spirit moves on

I'm 40 , and I remember in the early to mid 80s how people took bones and other buried items from a place in the Daniel boone national forest ,which if your not familiar is covered in burial grounds most unmarked , it was so covered if you kicked your foot on the ground you likely found an arrowhead , it wasn't made a federal crime until I think in 1988 sometime , its a strange area in these mountains you almost feel their spirits watching sometimes , I hope they found peace despite all the people who took their bones as curiosities , it makes my stomach to turn to remember as a child teens and grownups had jawbones and various things ,it was sad to think about now that I'm older and to even learn my own lineages ,powhatan\cherokee , I do hope they rest regardless . I also like to say I appreciate your appreciation for human life , and you got to live a life I wanted for myself is even more awesome I wanted to be a bush pilot things just didn't work that way for me but its awesome to know that about you , I've enjoyed every video tonight your for sure subscribed to by me.

I hope the spirits of the ancestors come back to haunt those who stole them. This just isn't right, give them back. What good is an apology when you don't do the right thing? Charges should have been brought against these grave robbers, they are thieves, and I bet they were not fired from their jobs for this either. What an adventurous life you have led, good that you could experience something you enjoyed. Along the way you met with people who seem to be forgotten by their country, and governments, sounds familiar. Thank you, great as always.

I also have native blood in me. Both my mothers mother side as well her father parents. Every christmas I try to help the lakota Indian childrens that attend st Joseph Indian school in south Dakota. They do need things a lot take for granted. I feel especially at christmas time every child deserve at least one or two gifts. I know how cold it get. I do the best I can.because no matter the tribe, they are all my sisters and brothers . You my friend is a good kind human being. May God bless you for caring about others. Lot my family served in different parts of the military my grandfather was a world war 2 vet. Even one of my aunts was first female to serve she became a nurse.she buried in Ohio full military honors.we learned you have to plan those can take up to 2 weeks. But her only granddaughter felt she deserved it. She also met her husband in the army too. Once they both served their military duties they settled in dayton Ohio sadly he became a alcoholic but through grace of God he lived to be in his 80s.he died. My aunt didn't live to much longer. But her joining the army made away for her to go to nursing school and became a registered nurse. Im.proud my family heritage. My grandfather got sick on his 70s the va drs tried hard to find out why he was I'll. The drs did all they could.but I think serving in the army the chemicals a lot them breathed in

They should be thanked.because of them we are free. While the government said PTSD was not real.so many veterans homes was closed. Lot people were not and still not treated fair.i enjoy you taking time to tell stories of all victims. No they not pretty stories but true. It never ceases to amaze me how some people (governments) think they have the right to take (steal) whatever they wish, give an insincere apology, and keep artifacts and relics they should return, and in this case, actual family and loved ones, but are too selfish or disrespectful to do so. I have had an interest in Native American culture for many years. I've learned a lot over the years but you've taught me something new today. Thx for your programs.

Atrocious! Native Americans are still treated as "less than". It breaks my heart.
I met an archeologist for the state of Iowa. She said part of her job was to preserve Indian burial sites even along roads. She said when they are excavating, the moment they uncover anything that indicates a burial, all digging stops and she is called in. She said if it is a burial site, the route changes, if only by a little bit. She also said they know a lot of what to look for ahead of time, so they try to investigate the area in question before digging begins. I thought that was very respectful and interesting.
It is very respectful an they. Are held accountable if they are caught not seeing or noticing bones even tools,..however I know for a fact here in Ohio some contractors in a hurry. Cuz time his money have a blind eye an even told employees. Not to dare. Stop the job by seeing. Anything.. Sad but true...connie

Unbelievable what happened to all those bodies and artifacts hopefully some day they'll make it right, love these stories about our Indian ancestors my wife was a Sioux Indian she died in 07 very young, it's a testament to your flying skills that you made it back that must be an amazing story these videos getting better and better would like to check out your other channel,be safe my friend.
They should give it all back. They are grave robbers that is very upsetting that they took personal and private property and who ever was on that bridge working should be in prison for the stolen property. I wonder if there is a way of finding that information. And would wisconsin be able to do anything about it or would they turn a blind eye on that as well.

You really do seem to have had a interesting and exciting life and I very much enjoy listening to the snippets you share with us. As I tell people, I'm not much of a people person, but you seem like a kind and thoughtful person which gives me back a little faith in some humanity.
I'm not really religious but I try to live by Buddhist precepts as I think they're kind. I'd prefer a sky burial if I could but it's not possible here in the UK.
This is a beautiful place. One can tell they had loving, caring families.
There is a cemetery just like this one at Chicagaun lake just west of Alpha on the U.P. Of Michigan but it's very old and most of the structures are gone.

@faces of the forgotten- the same thing happened in Warren, RI when the railroad went through the Wampanoag Burial ground (aka Burr's Hill Park) directly across from the Warren Beach.
Falmouth ma on cape cod built the library in north Falmouth on a wampanoag burial site and threw the stone markers in the pond because they interfered with the lawn mowing. Interest in expanding the library meant moving it somewhere else. Now a tennis court and ball park is next to library the native American burial ground what is left of it is well marked lawn area. They just didn't care back then.

I was fighting against Native American grave desecration in the 80's and 90's in KY and TN primarily. Most likely the ancestors you are looking for ended up in the Smithsonian. They have thousands of individuals.

Since I started watching this channel, I've learned alot of information. I also admire how you always show such respect for those who have served our country.
I always hesitate to watch videos about stolen ancestors and their relics, but will watch your videos as you show respect and challenge the powers that be to make things right. My maternal lineage is Chiricahua and my great grandmother and grandmother were born as POWs of the US Government at Ft. Meyers (my great great grandmother was captured by the Mexican Army and sold in to slavery). Thank you for speaking so plainly about the plight of Indigenous people and for your work on our behalf.

I remember reading about the Franklin expedition. Wasn’t there an issue where some died with lead poisoning due to the canned produce they had. Canning in an industrial scale was just beginning and I believe lead solder was used to seal the tins. I may be completely off track here.

I subscribe to Rhetty’s channel. He calls the buildings above the graves as Spirit houses”. He has gone to numerous Native American cemeteries in Oklahoma. Love the history and information you both share. Another good channel is Side step adventures.
Yes these sort of have different meanings among the different families and nations. But for the most part they are referred to as spirit houses. Here in Oklahoma they will have at least one hole in theme so the spirit can come and go. Food and drink can be commonly seen placed there as well as other tokens of remembrance. I never touch them out of respect because I know that it is not wanted. I also always try to tell people to never repair these structures. The belief is that when the structure disappeared the spirit has found it's way an moved on. They are meant to do this in the cultures here. Many of the older graves will not have one but most like had one. I know you know this because you have seen the videos but just in case someone else sees this. Thanks for subscribing and watching.

This was an excellent 28 min & 35 seconds I just spent with you Sir . 1st Nation peoples and their struggles here in Oregon have always run deep in my heart { troubles mostly instigated by the US Govt } .. I served in the Military over 45 yrs ago ,, I won't say which branch , but suffice it to say that there is corruption so deep in Military Intelligence { in dealing w/ Native American society & lands } , that it's enough to absolutely shock those who haven't been exposed to it .. Back then major Ops ran out of HQs in Arizona & New Mexico .. I am leaving certain things for my twin sons { 37 yrs old } to view & look at after my death .. I can hear and feel the passion you have for the most forgotten , abused , and neglected people in our USA .. Same thing happened at Standing Rock in 2016. DAPL bulldozed through a cemetery. Dozens of coffins destroyed and dumped. Three or four body dumps and DAPL wasn't required to tell the Standing Rock people where those remains are.
Unreal! What right do they have to keep the deceased and the relics??? You would think they'd have a conscious and return them.

I have nothing but respect for the Native American Nations all over the world. They are all our ancestors and we have treated them so poorly. The men who have exploited these people will have a lot to answer to when they meet their maker. Anything that can be done to help should be done. We are all people of one blood, all men are created equal. It is evil and greed that break us apart, only love can bring us together again.

TH-cam recommended you to me and I've only watched two videos so far, but I'm enjoying them. I like videos like these. It's really sad what happened to the native people. I agree that the best apology would be to return everything that was taken, but thinking how disgraceful these people were who took the stuff and bodies they were probably dumped somewhere.
On a side note you also have to be careful about what you leave by graves of loved ones nowadays. My Dad had placed some items by his Dad's grave and both items were stolen. Although my Dad thinks his sister did it. 😣

I started going to Wisconsin whenI was 5, my parents, dad was a huge fisherman. where did we go? Cable, lake Owen...gin clear waters! I flew my DeHavilland in there on the water about 10 years ago, for memories. Airport (Mt. telemark) had a famous old flyer lady I met...her name was Libby I think. She is dead now. I have to do her grave for an episode.
anyway, I landed on the Chip Flowage 2 years ago dropping my 12 year old off to another lakehome there. gorgeous. the whole Hayward area.
@@FacesoftheForgotten Yes indeed it is Beautiful here. My Dad ( also a huge fisherman ) had a plane and used to fly into Telemark before it had a runway ! Cables, Greenwood cemetery has my Great Uncle who has a Photo trimmed in gold, maybe the only one with a picture on it . Greenwood has a W.O.W. with a sad story of a young man who tried to save his friends from drowning. I do remember the old lady who ran the airport ! I still fish Cable Lake occasionally. My dad was born in Namekagon. Funny, I am from the Chicago area originally so I love the cemeteries you visit there as well ! Your Videos are respectful and Awesome !
Those houses remind me of the “spirit houses” built on Native graves in Eklutna and other cemeteries in Alaska. Spirit houses, an Athabascan tradition, provide a place for the deceased soul to dwell during the 40 days it is believed to linger in this world. When a body is buried, stones are piled on the grave and covered in a blanket to provide symbolic warmth and comfort to the person. Then the spirit house is placed over the blanket and relatives paint it in colors that represent the family

I have not been watching your videos for long but when I found them I must say they are all so very interesting and sad. You are so intelligent about the histories of these people you visit while they rest. You must do very deep research on these subjects. For some reason I recognize you from somewhere and I have racked my brain to figure out where I either know you from or have seen you before. Keep on your mission, you make people think about things and people we seem to have forgotten and you tell us about people and their lives we never knew and will now never forget.

What a fascinating life you’ve lived. I believe world travel tends to make people more empathetic of their fellow humans. It teaches us to appreciate other cultures and not think only in terms of what is good for us.
I love seeing different cemeteries so seeing the ones you have up there as well as the artic are fascinating. I think one of the things that is fascinating to me is the pride that native people have. Not only in themselves and their tribe or nation but also the country. They have stepped up every time for a government that hasn't always stepped up for them. Very interesting to hear of your expeditions in the artic area as well as the adventures. Sounds fun! Thanks for the mention of the channel too by the way.
Ron thank you for giving the American Indian people the respect they deserve. America belongs to the Indians they were here first. Wisconsin has a fine example to follow like our government who stole land from the Indians as well ad Buffalo and other artifacts. These people and our government make me sick when I hear these stories and even after all the persecution and stuff stolen they still fought in all our "modern" wars WWI and on and were discriminated against terribly. If it wasn't for the Code Talkers our lives would be very different but they don't even teach about them in most schools. Thank you Ron for the history you teach and tell. God bless you.
When my husband a Cree man was buried on his reserve traditionally under the burial mound the put 5 big logs above the casket and said it was his log house for the other side. We all put dirt in and then they hand buried him. April 28 2021 Enoch Alberta Canada. He was only 35 yr old I wish I could afford a grave stone tomorrow would be his birthday Feb 11th 1986 he would be 36, died of an accidental overdose and left to die

Many vets purchased land up north during their visits home or once their service was done. My grandfather did that when he was home from the Korean War. He owned over 20 acres in Lincoln County and use to bring me up there when I was a baby through early adulthood.
Robin here, Blackfoot tribe. Many of our brothers and sisters served in wars. For Government, that would rather forget and ignore us. The great spirit will watch over us. And one day, we will return to our land.
