House of the Rising Sun was a brothel ("it's been the ruin of many a poor boy and God I know I'm one") and that's the story for mums to tell their children "not to do what I have done"

From what ive been able to tell, its a song about vice. Whatever vice it is that holds you. Drugs, gambling, sex, liquor. The house of the rising sun is the place that has whatever your poison is when youre at your weakest. The house of the rising sun is your dealers house after 6 months clean. Its your old ex who you swore youd never call again. Its that last hand of poker when rent is all you got in your pocket, and its that bottle you forgot to take out of your cabinet.
Fun fact. The oldest vetsion we know of this song dates back to 1703. We have been singing versions of "house of the rising sun" for at least 320 years. And thats just the oldest version we have a written record of.
The Animals were a British band from the 1960's. Eric Burton was the lead vocalist. A lot of the early British bands were into and Inspired by American Blues music. Suggestions:

Yeah, this is a ballad. Many "cowboy" songs are ballads. This song, however, fits better in the category of early rock and roll ballads, especially the arrangement here. The Animals had a lot of hit songs in their era (early to mid-1960s). Hope you continue exploring their material. Peace.

Nobody knows who sang it "originally". It is a traditional folk song of unknown origin.

This was the first single record I bought with my own money way back in 1965, I think. It was a massive hit back then and their albums were full of jazz and blues, great band.
