Mark Knopfler wrote Money for Nothing after overhearing delivery men in a New York department store complain about their jobs while watching MTV, he uses actual quotes.
Mark was an amazing lyricist. And guitarist, as well. He stapled Dire Straits. Not only that, but had Sting on this banger, and just made him sing backups. XD what a guy.
The stank face you made when you first heard the guitar riff kick in....that’s the same face we made when we heard it back in the day. I had this album (on wax).
Nothing unites people like classic rock. I'm so glad we have this platform, so people... young and older people, can discover the miracle of CLASSIC ROCK AND ROLL.
For those not in the know, the background vocals and "I want my MTV" was performed by Sting. They (Knoffler and crew, not sting) came up with the idea for the song while in a department store, watching guys moving a bunch of stuff around and saying they should have been rock stars on MTV instead of busting their humps. 😆 P.S. That guitar on the cover with the metal sound plate is called a "Dobro" and was used by many delta blues guitarists. This album and the guitar work of Mark Knoffler changed the direction of rock in the 80s, permanently.
Sting wasn’t in the department store with Mark. He happened to be around where they were recording so Mark invited him to record the intro. Sting didn’t write any of the song.
@@rob-c. I wasn't clear and if it sounded like I said Sting was in the store, sorry. "They" being the dire straights guys. I never claimed sting was involved with the song, just that he sang the background, "I want my" stuff. And yup, they were in neighboring studios and Mark said "Hey, man... Wanna work on this with us?" 😉
You should look at the origin of this song. It’s funny as hell. Mark Knopfler, the lead singer was at Montgomery Wards department store and overheard 2 workers talking and this was their conversation as they were watching a Boy George music video on the TV’s lol.
I heard it was his boss from when he worked at a pawn shop when he was young. The boss was nuts and so he just wrote down the crazy things he would say.
A better part of the song was what the lead singer over heard in a department store. A couple of employees sitting around talking trash about mtv while watching a wall of TVs. (Back in the day).
@@Dangerous_Brian Fun maybe, but fact? No. Sting is credited on the song writing because “I want my MTV” is sung to the tune of The Police track “Don’t stand so close to me”. Sting didn’t write any of Money for Nothing.

As a kid who grew up with this music in the modern day, I’m always looking for better ways to listen to these songs. What’s a HiFi room like? Or how does it work?
@schawangus1996 Well, it was a room in our house that he dedicated solely to his HiFi equipment and record collection. He collected records and assembled his HiFi from NAIM Audio and Linn Audio. When I was in my teens we built an addition to the house that was purpose-built for the equipment and had a separate electricity supply from the main house and acoustic features. It was a great set up for an enthusiast like him. I miss sitting and listening. The world was lost for a while.
@@schawangus I think the most important thing is that the room is arranged such that you can position a pair of proper stereo speakers against one wall, and a listening position in front of them forming a rough equilateral triangle. It doesn't need to be a dedicated room other than that.
