One good thing to come of this is that Nintendo will straight up replace joy on with broken buttons or connection issues no questions asked. I’ve bought about a dozen joycon in various states of disrepair from buttons missing to the controller being completely shot, and just said they suffer from drift before they stopped working entirely. About 100 dollars for 6 sets of new joycon 👌

This does occur. However, that is not the cause of stick drift.
The real reason that drift occurs is that metal & or plastic housing actually falls down roughly 1 millimeter, causing a gap between the brushes & the graphite contacts. To permanently correct your drift issue, open the controller & place a 1 to 2 millimeter piece of paper/cardboard/something stiff enough to have the housing of the controller push the metal & or plastic housing back into place when the clamshell is joined pushing that gap back into place and the brushes can now contact the graphite pads.
This will 100% fix/correct the drift problems..

I have a Splatoon 2 edition, Gen one switch controllers, which so far have never developed drift whatsoever. However, I think that’s because I only use the joy cons in portable mode, and ensure my hands are very clean before playing, and I’m generally particular about keeping the the joy cons clean. Also, I use those rubber caps over the tops of the joysticks to prevent wear, but they also seem to hold those rubber skirts more firmly in place reducing crud getting dragged under into it, and prevents the joystick from being depressed at the fullest extent against the limitations of the potentiometers themselves by the additional rubber on the cap, bottoming against the case, and this puts less mechanical stress on the components. Besides, the potentiometers read 100%, a bit before the bare joystick reaches the mechanical barrier of the stick, so the rubber joystick caps only provide improvement, without any discernible caveats.

For very early stages of stick drift or sticky buttons I've always just dabbed a little 90% rubbing alcohol on it with a q-tip and mashed the button for a few seconds. Works every time

WD-40 Specialty Contact Cleaner also works great. Make sure its the contact cleaner though because regular WD-40 will not work and will probably ruin your joycon, but better to not find out. You use the same process and do 1 quick spray into the stick. Then move the stick around a bit so the cleaner can get in there good. This works wonders for me and has worked for about a year now with no problems.

you can also recalibrate them for a temporary fix until you can replace parts or get a duster can.
go to system settings> controllers and sensors> calibrate control sticks and then finish the calibration as best you can then see if it improved the functions until you can fix the bigger issue

I've always recommended a quick spray of silicon lubricant to not only loosely seal the connection between the socket and the flap, but also keep movement nice and smooth. This has also fixed some stick drift in the past with clients controllers. As for the longevity of the fix, I'm unsure, but you have a full can of spray at your disposal which should last a lifetime for a set of switch joycons.

I had a controller that had horrible drift, and a few days ago I tried to blow out gunk that I thought might be stuck. and SOMEHOW that fixed YEARS of extreme drifting! you don't even need a can of air, just blow on it!

the joycon is astonishingly easy to open up and replace parts. I occasionally have stick drift, and usually it goes away after enough stick wiggling. But its not garenteed, so i installed Hall effect sensing sticks from Gui (Gui-something i forget the full name). They use magnets instead of resistance and so shouldnt drift.
I use the ifixit screwdriver set. But I Highly recommend buying a cheap joycon repair kit that comes with the two screwdrivers youll need and plastic tweezers. And just watching a youtube video for the replacement. Also on the right joycon a chip blocks the battery connector and makes it hard to take out. I just did it with it connected (Ive done that in the past too without issue). But if youre worried, try to get a variety of thin plastic wedges and tweezers to test prying it (it comes out upward so has to be pryed up)

  • @WizardClipAudio

Yes, this works if the potentiometers are simply just dirty, which is probably most circumstances. If your joystick components are worn out from brutishly playing too roughly or simply from extensively playing over time, you’re gonna have to replace components.

Besides the problems everyone else is saying, the bottom of the joystick module doesn't have enough support, if opened sometimes the metal casing could be bent because it doesn't have any support, you can use a card and put a square peice of it under the module, but I 3d printed mine so it could be snug and it worked for me.

My Wii U was being awful and the left joystick would be still but the character (mostly link in BoTW) would still move, which caused lots of stress and also stopped me from playing the game for a while. I looked it up and it said to just blast air into the joystick, which worked like a charm, and I can play botw without stress. I told my mother and she laughed and went “yeah, when any issue with Nintendo happens, just blow air where it’s messing up”

"Dust" isn't getting under there in such quantities to actually cause the drift. The debris is coming from erosion on the inside.
But somehow a blast of air temporarily relieves the issue, and over time, the air gets less and less effective.

I opened the actual joystick box to repair my stick drift and found that the conductive material was being deposited on the tracks that tell where the joycon is. This was on a launch day Switch.
