  • Finally after so long, I present to you probably the BEST Windows XP gaming PC build ever! Well probably not ever but I still like calling it the ultimate Windows XP gaming PC build. This AMD Phenom II X4 940 build has been in the works for years now. From graphics cards that caught on fire, to the case being a tad too rusty for most people's liking, this gaming PC restoration wasn't easy. However now it is a great gaming PC for Windows XP games. Join me as I finally finish off this retro gaming PC build and see how well it performs in classic Windows XP games such as Need for Speed Underground 2, Doom 3, Gothic 3, and of course Crysis!

Correction: The hard drive used in this PC is a 80GB, not a 60GB one!

I still use a 980ti with my CRT monitor 👍. At 1280x1024 I've not found any game modern or retro it can't deal with at 85htz or FPS. The picture quality is insane 😀

Guess this pc is done for now or are you planning on upgrading something like the harddrive too a sata ssd maybe ?
Like a used intel 330 has ssd toolbox for windows xp so you got trim support there for example if you pick up a used 60 - 240 gb drive.
Or maybe just a bigger mechanical drive ?
Just 80 gb wouldn't be enough for the stuff I'd install personally heh.
Could technically go as far as socket 1155 or AM3+ on the platform (If thats an am3 phenom II it should swap right in into a am3+ motherboard. though its still not an unlocked chip so any overclocking is still done via fsb.)
& a gtx 970 or even Titan Z black for the graphics card in Windows XP which is basically dual gtx 780's in one card i think it is ?
Though id say a 1 gb 750 ti is more then enough horsepower or even a gtx 650 ti boost.
Though some games might not detect 1 gb vram that well & turn the settings down due to a too fast cpu but eh there's patches & community fixes for plenty of the games out there, including underground 2 for 1080p or up too 4k if you'd want that, & same with some other games via pcgamingwiki about that specific game. Worth a look if you got nothing better too do atm.

@@Mini-z1994 Will probably keep it as is as I want it to feel like it came from 2008-2009 for the most part. Though I was thinking of maybe upgrading the 800MHz memory to something a bit faster, but will have to do some research into if it will actually impact performance in any way. Though don't worry, there will be an AM3+, fx-9590 build with SLI coming to the channel in the near future, which should be right up your alley!

Nice dude! I did something similar with parts that were sitting around. Those caps will probably need to be replaced though.

Nice retro build. Make sure to check those caps! Also, most monitors have an option to preserve aspect ratio - look into that so you don't have to run old school resolutions like 1280x1024 stretched 😀

Man you need to recap that board 4 of the 5 caps in the voltage reg. area are bulging. I can see that all the way here in the states. Otherwise nice build. Lawrence

If you still got that motherboard, it has a load of bad caps on it around the vrm that need replacing.

I have a phenom 2 555 and a GTX 960 (max gpu supported by XP) and it eats Crysis alive.

Actually surprised Gothic 3 struggled. Was it an unpatched version?
