I guess that most casual youtubers don't even know a thing about this, whereas the the more Theory Crafting centered channels already covered this mechanic long ago and their viewers knows so there's no need to talk about it, you gotta search specifically for how icd works to get videos talking in depth about it
I liked that for examples such as Xiangling’s burst you even thought about making sure she had 0/100 percent crit rate so damage was consistent for teaching purposes. Put a lot of thought into things, great video!
I already knew all of this, but this is a great video I'd only add that ICD is tracked per skill per target, so exploding dendro cores isn't bound to ICD, since any pyro/electro elemental damage it takes will definitely trigger it Also, some gauges in the game don't have an ICD either, the wolf lord shield heads for example, they take damage from all ticks of Nilou's elemental skill "serenity aura or something" which has normal ICD
Character like Yoimiya is based around the 3-hit rule, if you pay attention to her normal attack string. This allows her to hit Vaporize on her 3rd and 5th attack string, which has the highest multiplier on her normal attack. But this is TOO RIGID, that if you missed a single shot, you’ll miss your big vaporize shot.
yoimiya's atk pattern is like 1st x 2, 2nd x 1, 3rd x1, 4th x2, 5th x 1, the first hit is divded into 2 part so the first part of the first hit will react as well, but of course the big hits are 3rd and 5th, that's why you don't want to dodge or get interupted mid atk string because you'll loose the big vape hits. Also if she gets too much atk speed to a certain point the vape order will change, this is apparent when she gets to c6.
@@Eclin also from ym experience yoimiya's targeting works fine when enemies is moving towards or away from you, it only gets bad when enemies moves side to side.
Played the game from the first month it launched…I have heard terms like ICD multiple times but no one has explained it with more clarity than you. Great vid bro!
This is by far the best ICD explanation video on TH-cam. You gave constant examples and slowed it down for us to see properly what was going on. I finally understand ICD properly. Thank you so much!
Wow! Although I knew about this mechanic already, this was the best and the most understandable guide I've seen so far. All these examples were just great and list of characters with shorter or no ICD was really helpful. I've been wondering why Diluc works better with Xingqiu than Chonguun, for some reason I didn't realise it's because of ICD, thank you for pointing at that! Special thanks for clear pronunciation and subtitles, English is not my native language and autosubs don't work well with game slang and names, so really appreciate it! I've been watching your guides for quite a long time and the quality only gets better. Showing builds in the end of the video is also an amazing update. Happy to see you're getting more and more attention, you deserve it!
man, i think this is one of few video that i actually listen from the beginning to the end without skipping a single things, bless the easy and on point explanation, pure gold
Would love to see more guide videos about obscure mechanics, such as elemental gauge and snapshotting. You explained this in such a thorough yet efficient manner.
Wow this is a very complicated and well thought system. I'm amazed by Hoyo because they came up with these out of nowhere and managed to get all characters to be in a balance somehow while still making them unique. But this video deserves compliments no less than that because this video is a goddam masterpiece. You explained all the cooldown durations and icd conditions so well even I understood the whole thing.
@@aldyzero6676 Well while I agree that it isn't a completely new idea, I don't think they took it from the avatar series. There weren't many reactions between elements in avatar, only earth+water =mud or earth+fire=lava kind of stuff. I think vaporize melt and overload kind of reactions in genshin are easy to come up with just by imagination but implementing these reactions in a game and setting the amplifying rates are very cleverly done. Also I don't think the ICD idea was taken from anywhere, I mean different kinds of videogames might have had it but Genshin didn't come this far by just taking inspiration from things that already exist.
@@aldyzero6676 I can see Avatar being a main inspiration about elemental combat, but I don't see how Genshin's elemental reaction came from Avatar, or any other media in fact. Though, I would like to know if there was a game before Genshin where their elemental combat interacts with each other like reactions.
those who played since the begginning knows the game back then is nowhere near balance lol, but yeah it took them 2 years and lots of update to balance things out.
This is genuinely one of the (if not THE) most educational Genshin videos. Most only scratch the surface and teach the basics, which is fine for the most part, but well explained and detailed videos like this are SO MUCH BETTER. 10 minutes that went by real quick and i wished there was more lol
So much quality goes into this. I thought i already knew pretty much about everything regarding ICD, but turns out i still miss something important. Cant wait for your guide on elemental gauge!

One of the best Genshin Impact videos I've ever seen. I already knew the mechanic, but the way you edited, scripted and explained in the video made me understand even more clearly about the mechanic. I am going to share this video with my friends!
Excellent video! You made this complicated mechanic pretty easy to understand and went so in depth that, even though I knew most of the ICD mechanics, still taught me something new (I didn't know about the 3 hit rule). Keep up the good work!
That's a really good ICD overview! It's also worth mentioning that ICD timers are not shared not just by different *types* of attacks, but also by *different enemies and characters.* That's why Xiangling can apply Pyro to all enemies around with her Burst and Swirls triggered by different characters will still deal damage even though it's limited just by 2 instances per 0.5 sec. Plunging attacks also deserve an honorable mention as no-ICD attack imo (Hello, Xiao mains) Other than that, this video covers pretty much everything to understand the general idea of ICD mechanic. Well done! The logical way to continue this series would be to cover Gauge Unit Theory due to how tightly it's intertwined with ICD to form the whole elemental interactions picture (you mentioned the entire list of topics for the series at 8:32 :D). This should help players get much better understanding of team building basics. Keep up the good work ^^
Your video is very well informed. Although I was aware that the ICD was a thing, I wasn't all that knowledgeable about how it worked. Now I know why some of the "inconsistencies" of the game actually works (such as Xiangling's no ICD, or Hu Tao's charged attack). You got a subscriber :)
ICD is also entity dependent. Different entities will have different ICDs. For Yae's E, the turrets hit the enemies randomly, and each enemies has a separate ICD of when the element is applied. In groups of enemiers, Yae can technically apply electro a lot more than expected. The same is true for the burgeon and hyperbloom reactions on bloom seeds. The faster your trigger hits regardless if those hits don't actually apply the element, they can trigger more burgeon and hyperbloom reactions.
I already figured it out myself but it's good to FINALLY hear someone confirm that different attack types all have their own ICD. I'm pretty sure I trying to watch similar videos in the past but they really suck at explaining anything, you did a great job
I've had a hundred people or so explain ICD to me including my whale brother, and as much as I understood its presence and who was strong around it, I never understood why. This video easily paints the clearest picture I've seen. Well put together thank you.
Good video. When I started, I had the same "wrong" understanding, since mihoyo/game never explained anything about ICD and was constantly showing off reactions.
Thanks for the vid! I've been playing since year one, and never knew about ICD. I love that you explain this in detail while showing on screen what is happening.
Finally, someone who can explain clearly and has a calm voice, tired of these obnoxious voices damn. Thank you for this video, I am certainly subscribing, hoping to get more videos like these, keep up the awesome work. 👏
This is probably the most informative video of Genshin I've seen which was also very easy to understand even as an AR 58 player. Usually easy to understand vids aren't very informative or informative videos are presented in a way only the creator understands. Kudos to you!
this explination of ICD really tought me a lot about the mechanics in genshin and gave me a lot of new idea's for party's to run for both solo and coop play. Thanks for making this guide it really is amazing. cant wait to check out some of your other guides to learn more about the game.
As a Yanfei main, it got me really happy that you used her to make clear and give examples of each points. Now I understand what ICD is AND know how to work around it with my main! Thank you!
This is good quality content. Pretty basic stuff for advanced/veteran players like me, but is an amazignly well made guide for new players or players that know nothing about TC. Great explanation 👍
Man, I'm already at AR59 but I didn't know much about ICD, until i stumbled on your video. Thanks for the video dude. The information is absolutely clear and well detailed.
bro nailed it. have been playing more than two years now. have 36 stars all the abyss patches but this is the 1st time I've seen the best explanation to this mechanic.
Because of my RNG luck early on I got C2 Mona, this makes her normal attacks have a chance to trigger charged attack with no stamina cost. With her fast normals + charge + taunt pulses I find she's able to layer hydro really fast. After watching this I'll want to look into who can team up with her for rapid reactions. C6 Fischl is usually with her, might need to build some Dendro.
Never seen this channel before, but very well-made guide. Nothing I haven't heard before, but I appreciate the formatting and presentation, and imagine it will be quite helpful to those unfamiliar with the mechanics of ICD.
Thank you, i have been playing since launch and am face rolling the abyss, but when i learned this mechanic it became a lot more easier, and surprisingly even non meta characters gets the job done.
Appreciate the video! The demonstrations and editing to emphasize certain concepts were great, and the pacing felt just right. It also didn't feel like 10 minutes had just passed. While I did know that an ICD exists, I never truly understood what that meant (that being said, I haven't researched it before, but seeing formulas or walls of text are kinda intimidating in a sense). Now I know that there's more to it than just "you wait before an element is applied again" and why certain characters are "broken" :^p
Wow, I'm glad I gave this video a shot. I knew about ICD beforehand but clearly never REALLY understood it. Thanks for finally bringing some easily understood clarity to a topic that even we non-TC OG players only somewhat understand and appreciate.
The sequence of workable teams you put in the end is quite helpful. I tried the melt with Rosaria, Bennet, Xiangling but replaced sucrose for Kazuha. Amazing team for crowd control in the Abyss. Thanks!
Sorry for a long-ish comment, but.... I started playing Genshin Day 1. I knew right away, I was going to save my primos. Once I got Diona, when she first came out... I played with the same team for the next 10 months, until I got Yoimiya. For those 10 months... I hardly paid attention to elemental reactions... I knew of them, but I pretty much just used Superconduct for my main source of damage (with Fischl as my main DPS). Once I started expanding my teams a little more... I felt I kind of had to learn more about elemental reactions. That's when I hit up youtube to watch videos. With a much more broad understanding of elemental reactions... I felt I was good to go. Then I started running into this thing called ICD. I googled and watch so many videos, that would try and explain about it is. But all those videos did a terrible job explaining it. The only knowledge I came away with (from watching those videos, and reading comments) is that ICD just means you're restricted on how often you can trigger elemental reactions. I don't care much for Meta. I'm like 1% Meta, and 99% just play with whoever I want to play with. So I didn't bother learning EVERYTHING about ICD...since I was having trouble finding people who could do a good job explaining it. Then, I just happen to stumble upon this video tonight...... and wow! I can't believe, in a 10 minutes video, you were able to explain so much, in so much detail. Putting on-screen graphics of what you're talking about, helps A LOT!! Also, explaining how specific characters are when it comes to ICD is amazing. I learned so much from this video, that no other video did a good job at teaching.
6:18 not really sure about Venti here, having 1s icd rule doesn't really change amount of swirls he can get out of his 20 tics. In aoe, case of bigger amount of swirls might be because some enemies got into the burst later so Venti swirls them on different timers from each other(and even then we may fall into 0.5 icd reaction limit). And getting more reactions might be the case of anemo part and infusion part of the burst having separate ICDs. So even if it feels that non-standard ICD should be "gamebreaking" - sometimes it's just not. Sorry for "nitpicking"
I'm glad that I found your channel. Even as a veteran genshin player, it feels good to watch something like this. Super well done, definitely waiting for that bell to pop again. :)
Well explained, i always play 5 star characters. The only 4 star i play is Benneth. But now i understand it a little more. Thank you. I know now i will have more fun playing and testing with different characters. Thank you.
thank you for this video! you're right that the game didn't tell us about this important mechanic. it did make my genshin learning curve to be pretty steep. I thought now I've learned about ICD, but still there's new things I learned from your video. I like your explanation style, it's really easy to follow. Looking forward to seeing more of your vids!
Very good explanation on the mechanic, and good video in general. We need more of these for the genshin TH-cam. By the way did anyone notice at 7:04 after Raiden's burst it reversed and started going counterclockwise? Correct me if Im wrong but I've never seen that before
I've known about icd for a long time, but i didn't know the 3-hit rule doesn't reset the 2.5-second rule! That makes attack speed so much more valuable than i thought it was!
i've always understanded that ICD was something that limits the amount of times you can trigger a reaction but this video helped me fully understand it. very simple to understand and detailed video!
brother in all my time playing the game since beginning. your video is the only thing that made me understand ICD fully. other yt are a bit confusing since most of us arent native english speakers. a very well put educational video to understand. if only math teachers are like this.
The ICD system is something that I've noticed while playing throughout the game, but never paid any additional attention to. It's very interesting to see someone do an analysis on it, great video!
Wooow I love this video, it's super well-explained and beyond insightful. I had my fair share of knowledge about ICD but after watching this video I feel like I now know everything there is to know about ICD, especially how to bypass it! My biggest takeaway was 4:28 I was looking wondering if I could make Melt Arlecchino work and I guess if I attack fast enough I will be able to, will test now... Thanks a lot for your video! And just wondering... Do you think you could make a tier list of characters based on how fast they can apply their element? Both on-field and off-field. I guess it is too much to ask but it would be a super useful tier list that could help people choose their team members.
I'm at ar 59 and been playing for almost two years, and this is the first explanation of icd I've seen that's actually understandable, makes sense and tells me everything I need to know. Thanks a lot!

One thing in really like about the video is the voice.
It's isn't somewhat loud or irritated to heard like most other TH-camr.
That's why i always play her attacks on point blank
@@aldyzero6676 contrary to people believes, Yoimiya being a range character is just an illusion lol.
yoimiya's atk pattern is like 1st x 2, 2nd x 1, 3rd x1, 4th x2, 5th x 1, the first hit is divded into 2 part so the first part of the first hit will react as well, but of course the big hits are 3rd and 5th, that's why you don't want to dodge or get interupted mid atk string because you'll loose the big vape hits.
Also if she gets too much atk speed to a certain point the vape order will change, this is apparent when she gets to c6.
@@Eclin also from ym experience yoimiya's targeting works fine when enemies is moving towards or away from you, it only gets bad when enemies moves side to side.
@@hagianghoang4026 yeah, thats why ICD as mechanic is flaw
Played the game from the first month it launched…I have heard terms like ICD multiple times but no one has explained it with more clarity than you. Great vid bro!
The only ICD video I've seen that explains thoroughly without bloating the video. New sub here.
This is by far the best ICD explanation video on TH-cam. You gave constant examples and slowed it down for us to see properly what was going on. I finally understand ICD properly. Thank you so much!
this man really has a harvard phd in genshin mechanics and presentation skills
Me who spams all skills and Ult as much as possible: 👁️👄👁️
Wow this is a very complicated and well thought system. I'm amazed by Hoyo because they came up with these out of nowhere and managed to get all characters to be in a balance somehow while still making them unique. But this video deserves compliments no less than that because this video is a goddam masterpiece. You explained all the cooldown durations and icd conditions so well even I understood the whole thing.
The elemental reactions system isn't really came out of nowhere, HoYo learned and took the reference from the Avatar animated series.
Deep understanding of the game’s mechanics and clean editing. What an underrated channel! Subbed.
This is genuinely one of the (if not THE) most educational Genshin videos. Most only scratch the surface and teach the basics, which is fine for the most part, but well explained and detailed videos like this are SO MUCH BETTER. 10 minutes that went by real quick and i wished there was more lol
Great guide for new Genshin players!
Keep it up, buddy!
So much quality goes into this. I thought i already knew pretty much about everything regarding ICD, but turns out i still miss something important.
Cant wait for your guide on elemental gauge!
You,deserved more likes and attention. Well edited, great and clear explanation, straight to the point no bullshit.
I hope this channel became big and we're hoping you keep doing this type of content, cause you are that guy who can make it big.
I already knew everything about this, but your video is so well made that I still watched the entirety of it. Take my like and subscribtion sir
You explained this very well imma share this to my frend he doesn't know this
dude, that's lifechanging. Thank you sm for sharing this!
(also my jaw dropped after i saw your dps Barbra doing like 20k dmg wow)
That's a really good ICD overview! It's also worth mentioning that ICD timers are not shared not just by different *types* of attacks, but also by *different enemies and characters.* That's why Xiangling can apply Pyro to all enemies around with her Burst and Swirls triggered by different characters will still deal damage even though it's limited just by 2 instances per 0.5 sec.
Plunging attacks also deserve an honorable mention as no-ICD attack imo (Hello, Xiao mains)
Other than that, this video covers pretty much everything to understand the general idea of ICD mechanic. Well done!
The logical way to continue this series would be to cover Gauge Unit Theory due to how tightly it's intertwined with ICD to form the whole elemental interactions picture (you mentioned the entire list of topics for the series at 8:32 :D). This should help players get much better understanding of team building basics. Keep up the good work ^^
Can make multiple plunge attacks with Keqing or Alhaitham using a sac sword to see this too. Albedo elevator or Venti skill can do this too.
Please keep making more videos like this. Helps those who don't understand this mechanics very well.
Wow that's by far the best explanation about icd i saw on yt to this day
This video is really interesting to watch even as someone who already knows and understands ICD...
I knew everything except for the kokomi skill bit, that was new and worthwhile info, which makes the whole vid worth watching. Thanks :)
Probably the best video explaining how ICD works. Thank you so much for making this!
childe : what's icd ?
None I think
xiangling:
Thank you for explaining this so well!!! I’d picked up the vague idea that attacks could have ICDs but not really thought beyond that
As a Yanfei main, it got me really happy that you used her to make clear and give examples of each points.
IM IN LOVE WITH YOUR CHANNEL!!!! LITERALLY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THESE TERMS LMAOAOOO AND NOW I CAN SAY I KNOW THEM SO THANK YOU!!!
bro nailed it. have been playing more than two years now. have 36 stars all the abyss patches but this is the 1st time I've seen the best explanation to this mechanic.
This is the clearest illustration of how ICD works that I've encountered.
Been playing since 1.0 but you're the first person to explain ICD that I could understand
thank you! some of the more intricate mechanics in this game are so hard to find good explanations and examples of but you demonstrated this so well
I've always seen people talk about ICD but i never understood what it meant ,this video thought me a lot, thanks!
Finally an ICD video I can link everyone knowing it will make sense!
Gauge theory next?
Although it had nothing new information to me, it's an excelent guide with well considered build-up explanations and visuals. Have my sub!
I have seen lots of videos talking about idc, this is the first one explaining it so good
Because of my RNG luck early on I got C2 Mona, this makes her normal attacks have a chance to trigger charged attack with no stamina cost. With her fast normals + charge + taunt pulses I find she's able to layer hydro really fast. After watching this I'll want to look into who can team up with her for rapid reactions. C6 Fischl is usually with her, might need to build some Dendro.
God even the outro is very informative! Good work!
Never seen this channel before, but very well-made guide. Nothing I haven't heard before, but I appreciate the formatting and presentation, and imagine it will be quite helpful to those unfamiliar with the mechanics of ICD.
I've watched TCs talk about it but none have really demystified it like you have in such a clear and succinct way. Thanks!
Brother this is the best Explanation about something complicated, I've ever heard in my life....And the neat thing is I understood it.
Thanks!
Great explanation! I had heard about ICD before and vaguely understood the concept, but you put it in much more concrete terms. Thanks!
Jesus, you explained this to God level tier. Bravo. Also had no idea it existed in the first place. Thank you.
There are so many contents in TH-cam, but by far your explanation is always the best. I really hope your channel gets more attention than it deserves.
Best ICD video I have seen by far. This video should be included in the game somewhere.
Correct me if Im wrong but I've never seen that before
Yess i am also surprised
Whoa wtf I completely missed that! I wonder if that always happens or if that rotation was bugged
I actually have seen it happened numerous times before, but I don't know what causes it
I've known about icd for a long time, but i didn't know the 3-hit rule doesn't reset the 2.5-second rule! That makes attack speed so much more valuable than i thought it was!
i've always understanded that ICD was something that limits the amount of times you can trigger a reaction but this video helped me fully understand it. very simple to understand and detailed video!
This video is very simple to understand and jumps straight to what you need to know in the best order
brother in all my time playing the game since beginning. your video is the only thing that made me understand ICD fully. other yt are a bit confusing since most of us arent native english speakers. a very well put educational video to understand. if only math teachers are like this.
Honestly, the best icd video on youtube, just by how easy it is to understand really complex mechanics
Very interesting, altho I don't play Genshin right now, I thought I was just seeing things and my elemental attacks missed or something like that, but this makes way more sense! Great video and great detail, I love to see well tested videos!
Thank you for making this!!
Well explained, I kinda new what ICD was, but never to this lengths you demonstrated and explained.
I forgot this kind of videos existed. Really helpful bro
this is SO educational SO easy to follow AND informativ. insane. props to u!
maybe update ur microphone so listening to u by headphones is more pleasant. u got a voice one likes to listen to, only the static noice is a bit of a bummer =)
Thanks, i am new playing genshin, glad to know about icd system work, very well explanation and easlily understand for a newbie, great guide
just found about your channel, dont really binge watch genshin creators since they are all over the top and boring for my taste. your video had a a story, a point to make and an awesome conclusion. really got me hooked on a video about something i know for while in the game. like and new sub
