I don't get how it's okay for art teachers to say your art is bad. There are hundreds of different styles and niches to it and no one person knows how to best improve upon _all_ of them. Art is very subjective and what one person calls a masterpiece could look like the ugliest thing in the world to someone else. Not to mention, as an artist myself, I get very attached to and proud of my work. So I can understand how much of a kick in the gut it is when someone says 'it needs some work' or 'it's bad'. But no artist should really have to deal with that unless they ask for it. There are all kinds of levels of art. Beginners, pros, hobbyists and more. We're all working to improve ourselves and one wrongfully given piece of criticism or a insult could hinder our progress and possibly even cause some to give up completely. So please. Keep that in mind before you go telling some young artist 'ewwww, this is such a cringy piece. The anatomy's all wrong and the colors are ugly!!'
Because there are certain base rules in art thst you need to learn first before you break them with your creativity. Personally, I have trouble when I'm not assigned something specific because I lack the creativity and/or ingenuity to think of something. But I get what you're saying.
For the greater majority of my life, I was sure that I would never be an artist. I thought there were all of these concepts that were foreign and weird and I'd never go anywhere with art. Good to hear someone else say it who went through an art program. And yeah, I would doodle anyway, but never thought it was anything worthwhile. Now I know that it was all in my head about not being an artist. I can, and that's a great feeling.
In my art school, we literally just copy art... *We don’t even learn art tricks or how to use paint, WE. JUST. COPY.* The teacher doesn’t even help us! She just tells us: *Copy this, doesn’t matter if it looks good or has any story behind it, remember! No creativity.* That’s not what she said, but that’s what it felt like.
I really enjoyed Chip's balanced view in this video. It's excellent retrospect and advice for young artists, which I can hope they take to heart. I majored in English and theatre and had a similar experience in many ways, so I think it's something that Arts (as in all of em) can relate with, especially in the creative field. The Arts are very much about creativity, but it's monetized creativity! It's what the employer (or patron in ye olden times) wants. There will USUALLY be restrictions, whether it's materials or subjects. It's about learning to be creative on demand and within given values. Learn how to aim the canon. Modern museum works are the outlier, really.
Im in highschool rn and i was forced into photography (I moved to another school) and i absolutely hate it i always try my best and put in LOTS AND LOTS of effort into my projects to try and make them stand out but still i get low grades. Thanks for tellin me your story, Photography course is almost the same as art course: Basic idea, Artist research, Design idea, Final designs
This is one of the reasons I’m doing art as a hobby. As much as I’d love to take an art class in school, it would ruin the fun of doing it for myself and creating my own perspective on what I think art is for me. Also, the pressure having to do it to fit another standard kind of sucks.
i always thought that art was like a hidden talent type of thing. like you couldn't do it if you weren't good, people wouldn't like it if it wasn't realistic, stuff like that. I always said my art wasn't good or like "i can't draw don't ask me" but then i was like hey i should *try* and now that i actually give it some thought and time, i can create good art. and yeah it might not be 100/100 pieces, but they make me feel happy.
You know what? I'm going through the Art Program in my university right now and....this makes so much sense. A lot of the mindset you were describing sounds very similar to the way I've viewed my art projects in the past. And am currently viewing my art history class.
You still can teach art, even though anyone can be an artist. It's about personal development, self-reflection and using your own experiences to tell something. It's about finding your own voice by experimenting and carefully thinking about your work and what you want to convey.
Just gotta say. Out of all the people I watch on here. You are still my number one content creator. Right above clips of Gordon Ramsay yelling at people. Keep up the great work!
TIMESTAMPS 10:16-10:29 & 11:45-11:55 ) You actually give me excellent advice I could remember for years or decades. You also make yourself seem friendly with your character's expressions. +5.1
Oof, I felt my salt levels rising when you were talking about abstract art haha xP I personally like abstract art quite alot and it is an art form I wish I could make, because believe it or not, abstract art actually needs alot of thought put into it. You need to have a pretty good idea on what and why you're making it, you need to think about techniques, colors, shapes and composition because that's what makes a good abstract piece of art. Anyway, sorry for my rant! ^^" I do understand abstract art isn't for everyone. Just let me like it and I'll let you dislike it ^^
In my school's art class we barely did any painting. It was mostly like history class, except we only learned about art history and read textbooks about various art styles. It was one of the most boring classes I had on my schedule.
I like the point you made of how you and fellow students felt simplistic art at museums as frustrating. Especially after being taught that pretty or accurate art is better in class. Plus how jarring it is to suddenly go from realistic to being told just be expressive in our art can be very confusing. There were a few videos I watched addressing the issue of this and how many students complain about it. I found they had great points so wanted to share what I could remember from them. Basically, they brought up that art classes teach the fundamentals first. Which is drawing from life or shapes. This teaches and shows how things in life are proportioned and work. It's important to start with that realistic knowledge and understanding before distorting it or making art expressive. When you have a good grasp on the proportion or how subjects work in reality, it makes choosing what features to exaggerate or simplify in more stylistic pieces. You can easily tell if someone doesn't know how to draw realistically if their stylistic art seems awkward. One can improve on stylistic art more efficiently by practicing realistic art. It's frustrating going from being told to draw accurately to being told to be stylistic or expressive. However, it is a necessary order of steps to learn. A lot of art teacher do tend to not word it well or rush it. Making it very confusing when they say "stop drawing cartoons" then also saying simplistic art in museums are great. It is strange how one can tell if a simplistic or stylistic piece has an understanding of realism and art or not. I like to use the black painting as an example. In photos it is pitch flat black on canvas, but in person it is made up of patches of dark pigments. The painting shows that color, or blacks for this matter, are subjective in a way and appear differently when compared to another adjacent pigment. He did not just slap on black or a bunch of dark colors, he had a purpose to his piece. Im not sure what the pieces of paper piece you referred to is, but I'm sure it has some sort of artistic purpose that the artist had intended. I have yet to see or hear about a piece that was made 'just cause' or for 'no reason' put into a museum. They all seem to have had some sort of intent behind them from the artist. Realistically made or not. I could be wrong or missed some points. I am only human after all. I can always try to be more concise if needed, just wanted to give my two cents and possibly open discussion by bringing up some points I have learned and recall.
Teacher 1: art is about making something that looks good. Chip: ok Teacher 2: art isn't about making something that looks good. Chip: wait what? In all seriousness that sounds terrible to have to just click into a new mindset.
i went to a concert tonight and the band sounded like U2, but I remembered you said not to tell artists that they are like another, more popular artist, so I just told them they rocked and I had a great time. So, thank you for helping me give the band a nice compliment.
You had art class in high school?? I'm jealous. When I was in high school art class, music and home economics all got cut out to make more room for gym class and math courses.
I took a art class and all she did was give us a drawing and say “draw this” and that’s what I did for most of it, the rest of the time we needed to paint a different type of color wheel three times and rarely read a article on a famous painter and take a test on it. I think we played a game once and it was a memorization gave and a spelling game
Teacher: *Look its an empty canvas soooo beautiful!* Me: In my mind: *What the friggity frig does this guy mean ;-;* When i speak : *Yeah its so...beautif....* Vomits
Modroc? Funny my art teacher called it plaster of paris(i think thats how it was spelt please correct me if im wrong) So when you said "modroc" for a second i was like: what- no thats wrong what-
My high school art teachers were fun artists that got you to experiment with different mediums and even paint on the walls. On art class grade would do something and not all of it was even painting. They even found a way to do one during the pandemic.

I break down all art into three categories visual (paintings), auditory (music) and perceptual (literature) they can all be mixed together like in a movie which contains all three or kept separate but one part is always the main focus in any single piece but in today's art world it seems a certain community of pretentious individuals want to make perception the main focus of what is supposed to be VISUAL art, call me a traditionalist but I don't give a damn about what the artist is trying to communicate or how anyone perceives it if their VISUAL piece is severely lacking general aesthetics, seriously your art teacher has to be a real pretentious twat to not hold zero-effort museum pieces to the same standards as his own students' work which are by far better VISUAL pieces than anything in MOMA.
The same problem. I always try to draw something original and I never ask my teacher to help me because she will ruin my whole idea and make it as she likes

Don't forget crash team racing nitro fueled and avengers endgame
In my art school, we literally just copy art...
*We don’t even learn art tricks or how to use paint, WE. JUST. COPY.*
The teacher doesn’t even help us! She just tells us: *Copy this, doesn’t matter if it looks good or has any story behind it, remember! No creativity.*
That’s not what she said, but that’s what it felt like.
As an artist I can safely say that ART in itself is so complex and multi-defined, that literally anyone or anything can be one, it’s insane!
2:42 can we take a second to appreciate how smooth that looks
Art isn't just a bunch of pretty pictures

Your animation is so smooth!!!! Nice work chip!!!
You know what? I'm going through the Art Program in my university right now and....this makes so much sense.
A lot of the mindset you were describing sounds very similar to the way I've viewed my art projects in the past. And am currently viewing my art history class.
*You mention the old video*
*Oh yeah sorry I've already watched every video on your channel because I love you?*
i'm glad i'm not the only one

"I don't suck at all the things, just some of them"
My new life motto
You still can teach art, even though anyone can be an artist. It's about personal development, self-reflection and using your own experiences to tell something. It's about finding your own voice by experimenting and carefully thinking about your work and what you want to convey.
That circular shading is actually good advice. Thanks!
Just gotta say.
Out of all the people I watch on here. You are still my number one content creator. Right above clips of Gordon Ramsay yelling at people.
Keep up the great work!
This is Actually a useful video! so when I go to college I will have an open mind! Thank you Chipflake ☺️ 👏 🐈

It takes me REALLY long time to learn how to draw a LEG and yet PIECES OF PAPER get to be in a museum
The introspection in your narratives is amazing.
I love the way this was drawn

Oof, I felt my salt levels rising when you were talking about abstract art haha xP
I personally like abstract art quite alot and it is an art form I wish I could make, because believe it or not, abstract art actually needs alot of thought put into it. You need to have a pretty good idea on what and why you're making it, you need to think about techniques, colors, shapes and composition because that's what makes a good abstract piece of art.
Anyway, sorry for my rant! ^^"
I do understand abstract art isn't for everyone.
Just let me like it and I'll let you dislike it ^^
Abstract art can be really pretty!!
You are amazing at art also your soooo close to one million subscribers! Keep up the good work ,I really love your videos

In art class I was literally bad at everything, portrat, painting, nothing

I looked back at your original video, and DAMN, you really improved on your animation skills !
Now THIS is animation.
Teacher 1: art is about making something that looks good.
Chip: ok
Teacher 2: art isn't about making something that looks good.
Chip: wait what?
In all seriousness that sounds terrible to have to just click into a new mindset.
My art class in elementary:
Teacher; Do art thing and I give you sweets, we have art contest, draw dumbest thing, u win
I just want to say that you're a great TH-camr and I love your art style

I hate abstract art, I also have an open mind to quite a bit of art. I just think it looked boring and was boring to make

Me, an introvert: What's asking?
i went to a concert tonight and the band sounded like U2, but I remembered you said not to tell artists that they are like another, more popular artist, so I just told them they rocked and I had a great time. So, thank you for helping me give the band a nice compliment.
You had art class in high school?? I'm jealous. When I was in high school art class, music and home economics all got cut out to make more room for gym class and math courses.
Yeah I'm not the best either so.........ur not the only one, Chip
You sometimes need your life to master your hobbies
I took a art class and all she did was give us a drawing and say “draw this” and that’s what I did for most of it, the rest of the time we needed to paint a different type of color wheel three times and rarely read a article on a famous painter and take a test on it. I think we played a game once and it was a memorization gave and a spelling game
My teacher "make an animal!"
Me **makes a wolf with wings laying down next to a cat**
“Art” is the broadest of terms. Literally, anything can be art.
Don't think I didn't see that Bojack reference. I saw it and I applaud you.
Teacher: *Look its an empty canvas soooo beautiful!*
Me: In my mind: *What the friggity frig does this guy mean ;-;* When i speak : *Yeah its so...beautif....* Vomits

My high school art teachers were fun artists that got you to experiment with different mediums and even paint on the walls. On art class grade would do something and not all of it was even painting. They even found a way to do one during the pandemic.
I watched all of you're videos Chip. It's pretty good

In the Uk College is basically High School, unless you are in the UK then I'm an idgit lol
