No video of Whitewater wipeout? I was there, and remember it like it was yesterday. It was (I think) the 3rd of 4th time we had seen the Garfield show that year. It was groundbreaking and astonishing. So, when the marching dominos started to fall at the end of the show, we were in disbelief. We thought for sure that there would be injuries (beyond bloody lips and teeth). When we saw them again again at Finals, we held our breath during that move. And that time, many people cheered just because nobody fell.
Vid of the Wipeout likely does not exist. 1) Filming regionals was not a thing in 1984. 2) Camera were huge. 3) Cell phones did not exist. There ARE the pics of the Wipeout, shown in this vid, but in 4 decades, that's all I've ever seen. The only physical injury to a member (there were some horns that took damage) was a sprained/strained ankle for the soprano who tripped and started it all. He missed a couple of practices and maybe one show, but was back in the lie after that. They got a perfect subcap score -- ensemble visual, IIRC -- and the fall did NOT cost them the win over SCV and us (BD)....SCV earned the win legit that night. The Wipeout was missed by the upstairs visual judge because 1) it was way out at the end of the line on side 2 (audience right), 2) the judge was looking at the center of the form, and 3) they recovered VERY fast and were back in the line before the judge looked at them....not in the right spots, but in the form. And as it was the final move it in the show, placement in the line didn't mean anything. The audio is from a brass judge, who could not score a visual caption. Now...someone DID catch his heels on the move at finals -- it was in the center and on camera. Had HE fallen, I'd have my ring....but I'd hate to be him after that...he'd've been blaming himself for the loss for 4 decades....no bueno.
I marched the season after in 2021 (and I was even contracted as far back as 2020 when dci died, and I never really heard about it.) I did discover it on my own a bit before my season tho, but never asked.
Something I want to add to 24:04: There's still some system blue products like the Evans SB heads, and Drillmasters shoes with the SB brand still on them. Also, I heard that Conn & Selmer got the patents from the Blue Devils to make the System Blue instruments as the King and Ludwig performance series.
I’ve enjoyed your videos so much! This one was interesting and fun as well! Some things I know , and some things were new to me. I have been around Drum Corps since the late 60s. I only had a chance to march in Senior Corps in ‘77 (?) with the Chicago Connection. Marched one season, then moved on to other things; but that time was unforgettable, and I feel privileged to have had that time. My love for Drum Corps will never die, and I’m so glad you are making these videos. Thank you!
The Whitewater Wipeout happened - I saw it live. It was all we talked about for days - like how every Cadet on or off their feet did their best to power through the spill. Since Suncoast Sound loaned Garfield at least two contrabass instruments for every regional and world finals, we talked a lot and they mentioned that Z-Pull crashes happened in practice a few times. Marc Sylvester also mentioned it when he taught us at our UF Gainesville camp in 1986.
The Jean Elizabeth Joseph story is so sweet and really embodies the best of human nature! Great video, super interesting as a drum corps fan who never marched corps.
36:00, Six Flags ride operator here: we also use Squincher during the hot summer days, at least at my park. Not sure about the other theme parks. I had no idea Squincher was also popular amongst DCI kids haha
You certainly gave me a lot of flashbacks! Most notably what we called "fratsnapping" or what you called African snapping. I forgot where I had learned it until you reminded me it was a dci thing, and I remembered the year I marched I put a lot of effort into learning how to do it.
(This was told to me from someone who was with the corps since 82) The 89 fracking incident was impart to stress over a home/family issues that was happening at that time
Gosh, I feel old. I've been out of the activity as a corps member since 2007. That summer, our busses had this brand new technology called wi-fi. It didn't really matter because nobody had ability to use it. The snap has been around much longer than most people realize. A lot of corps (mine included) only got off-time when it was laundry day. My last year, I think we had 2 full off days the entire summer. The day after off-days were usually the worst from a rehearsal stand point. For some other oddities and terms in DCI (at least from my time): 2006 Capital Regiment Box 5 vs box 1 housing The RCA Dome The mass brass debacle was common for several years (not just 2008 or by BK) Bob Barker 2000 BD bass drummer The Vanguard yell, particularly '02-'07 Similar to the Iowa town, rehearsing in Utah was always an interesting experience given the Mormon lifestyle. Most corps until very recently never had medical staffs (We had Bandaids and Advil), strength coaches, and chefs, much less meteorologists Buy-stops were a rare occurrence, and this was well before Bucees became what it is today.
@@CJsMusicTrumpet I don't remember specifically, but I know one of our props at bluecoats got hashed in the start of the show. I think there might've been misinformation somewhere about it being set as a college hash?
G Bugles were how I learned what drum and bugle corps was. Back in middle school I was buying a step-up trumpet and I asked the guy why one of them had 2 valves. He let me play it too, they hardly sound like a trumpet at low volumes. But he told me what drum and bugle corps is, though he didn’t know what corps that soprano belonged to as it didn’t come with the original paperwork.
Fun corps wake up story: In 2011 at 7th Regiment, the front ensemble woke the corps up for open class finals with our lot tune (Africa by Toto). Later during finals week in Indianapolis the drumline played the cadence to wake the corps up.
Man this was great. Ive been getting into DCI a lot more lately and I wanted to learn more about the culture and what goes on on the inside. Wonderful👍
Fact: My brother performed for Pioneers in... I believe 2017-2018? In a parade in the upper-midwest (forgot if it was Chicago or Miluakee) He was still in the Pioneers group chat after his short stint with the group and picked up on the horrors going on in that group chat. My brother was also one of the whistleblowers for the Pioneers (he also told me a middle-school band could perform better than that group).
Went to high school with a guy who did front ensemble for Pioneer Indoor in 2015 and 2016. Luckily they were spared from the mess at Pio and split cleanly. His experience was really good there, I’m glad your brother got out before shit REALLY hit the fan.
Hi. '94 Glassmen contra bass member here and also former Morehead State Univ. band member. I had no idea that happened to Tim Snyder. I used to play Tuba with him back in 94-96 at Morehead State. Back in the summer of 1995 he, Brian Ellis, and I were working on making Winter Marching Brass Ensemble a thing and he developed a music set and theme for the first show, Brian worked on drill and music, and I worked on some ideas and rules for the activity. I got out of music education about a year after that and always wondered what happened with that idea. Not sure if it was the genesis of the current activity I'm seeing now through WGI, but it was an attempt to start it.
Yeah you don't mess with a guy from the mean streets of Crestwood, KY (but now that I think about it Tim might be from Goshen) Anyway those South Oldham boys know how to rumble.
My brother and I played with the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen for many years The GREAT 60's Era ! Maybe ? one of the first All Age Corps. A bunch of us use to get together for corps shows, but stopped going to this DCI thing many years ago !!!!!!!
Back in the day, I knew Jeremy Seneca as a brass tech for my high school marching band and his wife (the Cadets member in the infamous photo with him at finals retreat) is an alumnus of my high school. So, I guess I must be pretty deep beneath the water?
The national anthem thing was started by 7th Regiment around 2017 TBH, it was basically a fun thing to do while showering. The acoustics in locker rooms are especially great for harmony. I'm pretty sure we started the trend because those seasons, we would sing it in the showers before shows, and get really odd looks from other corps. So, I think we were the first. Back then, Open Class championships were held in Michigan City, IN, and most of the housing sites did not have locker rooms that were large enough for an entire corps to shower. So a lot of OC corps were all doing pre-show showers at the show site. I think that is where the meme spread. 7R would enter the room, look at each other wordlessly, and start. Before OC finals, that meant that between 5 and 7 corps were showing in the same locker room at the same time, figuring out what the hell to do when the 7R folks were belting out the anthem as loud as they (we) could. We were on strict orders to NOT do this before OC prelims (we followed them), since our shower time overlapped with other corps performance times, and the showers looked right onto the field. We tried to also do it with the Soviet anthem, but it was hard to teach the lyrics. The international members of our corps were often very excited to sing our anthem with us.
You are a little off on the Blast! history. The 1994 and 1995 seasons, Star of Indiana was still operating as Star of Indiana, they were doing a brass theatre summer program with the Canadian Brass (I know it was the Canadian Brass in 94, not sure about 95) A couple of the designers then workshopped the brass theatre concept to a Broadway show. The show Blast!, was not part of the Star of Indiana organization and did not premiere until late 1999 or 2000. (As there are 3 members of the 1999 Crossmen, who I marched with, that are in the original cast) The PBS broadcast was the show seen in both New York and in London's West End. In 2002, they were workshopping a new version of the Show with Wayne Downey writing the brass book. The did a preview show series in Walt Disney World.
31:21 you fail to mention the aspect of color guard (which i dont blame u for). Color guard terminology and technique very from east coast to west coast. For example, the angle of a shoulder hip is steeper on the east coast, proper techinque for catching a sabre is different: one catches a standard sabre toss with the right hand much closer to the hilt on the west coast compared to the east coast, along with much more
Oh man this brings me back. Did Gold/PC/Blue Stars between '12 and '16. Thanks for the laughs, and i'm also glad to hear that the culture is improving with some of the more... questionable traditions phasing out.
Disaster after 88 Madison win - After their win on their 50th Anniversary, Corps members were traveling to a Corps function and had a car crash. All of the members died except one, who was paralyzed from the chest down. The next year, Madison bought him a car pacifically made for a paralyzed person to drive. He became an equipment judge for Winter Guard… he is extremely loved.
2008: The hardest thing in 2008 was having John have us all together(horns) and tell us in the morning before leaving for finals that Phantom bought 45 to the 45 seats. Went on to tell us the fact they all had been instructed when in the show to stand and cheer and was warned we were most likely going to need to step it up. I can tell you I did play something I fully regret at the end of the all corps and John ran up asking, " is that how you're going to end your season". I don't want to bring up what happened next but was not good. There isn't a single recording of what I played to this day as the videos all cut right before I play the line. Drama you might want to find is 2008 regional of I think it was Alamo.....only half the corps started. 2007: The field was fine and honestly hearing George ask for the field painting based on what he saw with the weather app.
32:34 ‘42 Buckaroos reminds me largely of Goncharov… a fictional creation that’s idolized by a niche group of people (dci alumni and tumblr users, respectively)
Me during this video: "I know, I know, I know..." Also, ngl, that 2023 Crown Baritone 3DS cam pissed me off. I was really wanting a horn cam to learn the music and he put that out. Normally, it would be funny to me, but I was not amused because there were no other baritone cams posted at the time and it took a long time before another baritone finally posted a decent cam. In the end though, I am grateful that they post these things at all because I know they don't have to. Also also, why skip For Holy Name Shall Always Be?
If you make another iceberg video, you should look into "You guys, Bob Barker died!" This was a joke in the early-mid 2000's -- each year Bob Barker "died" during DCI tour. It was basically a joke about people being disconnected from the "outside" world during tour in those days since it was pre-smartphones.
Has someone who marched in 2007 finals, I can definitely tell you that the field really does suck. It felt like you're marching on concrete and the yard lines and hash were really hard to see so if you had intervals that were two steps apart and you're making sharp turns and you so happen to be holding a contra, good luck
I have one with a vertical valve. Although I’ll admit I have a strong suspicion that it’s a prototype because all of the other models of that horn have a horizontal.
The absolute shock and AWE on my face when i'm watching this video and the screen scrolls down to about halfway down the iceberg and i simply see "SHAWN NAGPAL" I busted out laughing! I think i vaguely know why he's on here, but I never actually got to know the full story. I was just super surprised to see his name here because he was one of my baritone techs when i marched for crossmen in 2022! I do know he's somewhat of a cryptid in the drum corps community somehow? something like that. When i auditioned for Bloo the following season (and didnt make it lol) i remember we were doing casual icebreakers during some down time at that camp and when i said i marched with Crossmen last year", 2 kids immediately were like "OMG SO YOU KNOW SHAWN NAGPAL?!?"
Also side note, and semi-unrelated, the dude is a living meme anyway. Among the collective members/former members of Crossmen from the '21 - '23 seasons, there are a good few dozen or so meme worthy pics of that man, my favorite of which, a screenshot of the baritone group chat where he "threatened" us with a knife (he was helping in the cook truck that night) if we didn't finish our dotbooks that night lmao
I wish I could find out where and why the rumor spread because it's definitely one of the weirder ones. Weirder than bob barker dying in my eyes for sure.
Supposedly, he marched second mello in either ‘91 or ‘92. The rumor goes that his PR team didn’t like the fact that he marched DCI (thought it was bad for his image) and paid to have any evidence of him marching destroyed. However, there is still one group photo that exists showing Snoop in uniform. I swear I’ve seen it at some point, but it also could very well be a fever dream at this point. We’re talking 7-8 years ago during peak >implying days (iykyk). I choose to believe it’s cannon lol
I would like to see a Canadian Drum Corps iceberg. Some topics to include could be: Drum Corps National/"What about us?" Toronto being the only city to ever have two corps in DCI Finals DCI Finals in Montreal ^ Highest ever attendance for DCI Finals ^SCV tear due to the audience being so loud ^ Moving the field back 15 yards due to the sound issues 55 yard line (unsure if there are any actual stories about this, but Canadian football fields are larger than American fields) 9/11 killing off Canadian corps Les Stentors The Calgary Stampede Showband
24:20 say what you want but the first batch of SB horns played SO WELL... shame they completely botched them in every subsequent batch. I still wish i bought my old KingSB when my corps sold em

Heard about it in real time from nearby. It was big news that day. It happened.
It's so funny to me to learn that Shawn Nagpal was some sort of big drum corps meme two seasons after he was my bari tech, what an amazing guy haha
swear ik this guy
huh that's funny Shawn Nagpal was my baritone tech too :)
Bro I marched Spirit of Atlanta in 2023 and I wasn't even aware of the Arby's-Spirit of Atlanta 2019 alliance. That's actually insane 😅
What’s up AJ
I marched the season after in 2021 (and I was even contracted as far back as 2020 when dci died, and I never really heard about it.) I did discover it on my own a bit before my season tho, but never asked.
Yeah, we all got to keep the Arby’s hats we wore for the commercial shoot. Fun stuff
Something I want to add to 24:04: There's still some system blue products like the Evans SB heads, and Drillmasters shoes with the SB brand still on them. Also, I heard that Conn & Selmer got the patents from the Blue Devils to make the System Blue instruments as the King and Ludwig performance series.
yep! system blue drumsticks are very very nice
13:46 it's so surreal seeing this corps mentioned on here. My dad had a ton of friends who marched with them and frequently brings it up
I’ve enjoyed your videos so much!
I learned more about drum corps in 49 minutes than I did in 30 years...nice research!! Keep this up!!!
For some other oddities and terms in DCI (at least from my time):
2006 Capital Regiment
Box 5 vs box 1 housing
The RCA Dome
The mass brass debacle was common for several years (not just 2008 or by BK)
Bob Barker
2000 BD bass drummer
The Vanguard yell, particularly '02-'07
Similar to the Iowa town, rehearsing in Utah was always an interesting experience given the Mormon lifestyle.
Most corps until very recently never had medical staffs (We had Bandaids and Advil), strength coaches, and chefs, much less meteorologists
Buy-stops were a rare occurrence, and this was well before Bucees became what it is today.
I got caught in the background of the recreation Cavs/Cadets photos from last season lmao
On the getting hashed note: As someone who marched in 2022, the allentown field was set really poorly, and multiple corps had issues with it
in what way? I just remember it being the same as any other high school field.
@@CJsMusicTrumpet I don't remember specifically, but I know one of our props at bluecoats got hashed in the start of the show. I think there might've been misinformation somewhere about it being set as a college hash?
I suppose if you are told something incorrect it can be confusing. But I remember that J birney drum has ALWAYS been HS hash
Babe wake up new VisTech video just dropped 🔥🔥
G Bugles were how I learned what drum and bugle corps was. Back in middle school I was buying a step-up trumpet and I asked the guy why one of them had 2 valves. He let me play it too, they hardly sound like a trumpet at low volumes. But he told me what drum and bugle corps is, though he didn’t know what corps that soprano belonged to as it didn’t come with the original paperwork.
The tick system was not used by DCI for the "first few years" but from 1972 through 1983 - eleven years.
Fun corps wake up story: In 2011 at 7th Regiment, the front ensemble woke the corps up for open class finals with our lot tune (Africa by Toto). Later during finals week in Indianapolis the drumline played the cadence to wake the corps up.
Remember how I said reading the iceberg confused and interested me? Yeah it lived up to it. Holy crap lmao. Thank you for putting this together!
I actually was lucky enough to meet someone who helped stage manage BLAST! At temple
Me when the academy tuba line ate crayons
When do they not?
very in character
Know a guy who marched a year of academy as a tuba and ngl i can totally see this happening
I literally marched with Shawn for 2 years at his start. He was iconic.
Shawn Nagpal
Man this was great. Ive been getting into DCI a lot more lately and I wanted to learn more about the culture and what goes on on the inside. Wonderful👍
It's a world of its own with more lore than any one Corps can tell. Have fun learnin.

Blast is actually back some of my friends have gotten spots for this upcoming year
My brother and I played with the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen for many years The GREAT 60's Era ! Maybe ? one of the first All Age Corps.
A bunch of us use to get together for corps shows, but stopped going to this DCI thing many years ago !!!!!!!
Yooooo it’s me! 47:43

If a drum corps had to warm up in my front yard, i wouldn't mind, that would be awesome
Back in the day, I knew Jeremy Seneca as a brass tech for my high school marching band and his wife (the Cadets member in the infamous photo with him at finals retreat) is an alumnus of my high school. So, I guess I must be pretty deep beneath the water?
Lets just say, a certain Tuba player had "Spike". A missle like object that made its way onto the finals field in 2023.
They've been making that announcement at stadiums for year before that. I remember hearing it in '19
@MonoKyrios oh absolutely, I heard it all years I marched but we did in fact bring in a middle like object despite the announcement lol
Been awaiting this video !! Thank you
The Foreskin Fusiliers are right up there with the ‘42 Buckaroos. I didn’t know Sqwincher existed anywhere else outside of my current job.
I want to say it’s been a thing even before that. But yes it has very much been popularized in recent years.
YOOOO SHAWN NAGPAL IS MY BAND DIRECTOR
the cabbies murder case one is wild. going on my 4th season marching there and never knew. great vid man!
I was looking to see if anyone brought this up and would have if you hadn't... 👍Thanx muchly...😎

5:18 whooooo I have no idea what a dot is other that a place you’re supposed to be on the field FRONT ENSEMBLE EVERY DAY BABY!!!!!!
You had me at buc-ees
31:21 you fail to mention the aspect of color guard (which i dont blame u for). Color guard terminology and technique very from east coast to west coast. For example, the angle of a shoulder hip is steeper on the east coast, proper techinque for catching a sabre is different: one catches a standard sabre toss with the right hand much closer to the hilt on the west coast compared to the east coast, along with much more
Loved this fun and obscure facts video. Thank you. Please do more. 😊
This is so badass. Its bringing me so many great memories to my drum corps years
Those who were in RAMD pronounced it Ram-D. I was there. It was WILD!!
Oh man this brings me back. Did Gold/PC/Blue Stars between '12 and '16. Thanks for the laughs, and i'm also glad to hear that the culture is improving with some of the more... questionable traditions phasing out.
watching post-2024 season and can now disprove the Blue Devils stairs and ladders theory
2024: has stairs- 3rd place
Re: Sqwincher. It was during the 2019 season. I was a camera operator for that livestream while interning with DCI and it was indeed quite funny
that Jersey Surf wake-up call gave me chills
i officially love you cjs music thank you for this post 💕
Damn didn’t cover the light up uniforms with SCV surprised
Disaster after 88 Madison win - After their win on their 50th Anniversary, Corps members were traveling to a Corps function and had a car crash. All of the members died except one, who was paralyzed from the chest down. The next year, Madison bought him a car pacifically made for a paralyzed person to drive. He became an equipment judge for Winter Guard… he is extremely loved.
13:13 wait, thats my horn!
32:34 ‘42 Buckaroos reminds me largely of Goncharov… a fictional creation that’s idolized by a niche group of people (dci alumni and tumblr users, respectively)
bro imagine u chilling in ur house and then your come outside and the bluecoats battery is there
Me during this video: "I know, I know, I know..." Also, ngl, that 2023 Crown Baritone 3DS cam pissed me off.
If you make another iceberg video, you should look into "You guys, Bob Barker died!"
This was a joke in the early-mid 2000's -- each year Bob Barker "died" during DCI tour. It was basically a joke about people being disconnected from the "outside" world during tour in those days since it was pre-smartphones.
I marched '16-18. You completely reawoke the memory of Implying for me
That’s crazy bc at mandarins we definetly say “danger bays” (at least on the guard bus)
Thank you for making this!
good video keep posting, i love to watch them -Jackson english
?!
Has someone who marched in 2007 finals, I can definitely tell you that the field really does suck. It felt like you're marching on concrete and the yard lines and hash were really hard to see so if you had intervals that were two steps apart and you're making sharp turns and you so happen to be holding a contra, good luck
I’ve never seen a bugle with a single vertical valve, only horizontal
I have one with a vertical valve. Although I’ll admit I have a strong suspicion that it’s a prototype because all of the other models of that horn have a horizontal.
Is that Shawn Nagpal????
The absolute shock and AWE on my face when i'm watching this video and the screen scrolls down to about halfway down the iceberg and i simply see "SHAWN NAGPAL"
I busted out laughing!
Among the collective members/former members of Crossmen from the '21 - '23 seasons, there are a good few dozen or so meme worthy pics of that man, my favorite of which, a screenshot of the baritone group chat where he "threatened" us with a knife (he was helping in the cook truck that night) if we didn't finish our dotbooks that night lmao
thank you, love the drum corp content!
Snoop Dogg 100% marched Mandarins
I wish I could find out where and why the rumor spread because it's definitely one of the weirder ones. Weirder than bob barker dying in my eyes for sure.
I thought it was 91, in which he wouldve been 19 and before his appearance in dre's album in 92
Supposedly, he marched second mello in either ‘91 or ‘92.
@CJsMusicTrumpet has clearly been paid off by Snoop’s publicists to cover up this fact
Dawg how jfk saved Boston Crusaders(idk if it’s in your Boston video or not)

DCI Finals in Montreal
^ Highest ever attendance for DCI Finals
^SCV tear due to the audience being so loud
^ Moving the field back 15 yards due to the sound issues
