    For what they charge for these dot cards, they should put more paint on them! I have bought pretty much every dot card out there and the other companies put a decent amount of paint on their cards.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've only experienced dot cards from Schmincke and Daniel Smith but yes both of them had way more paint on them. I think I could have painted swatches this size 3 or 4 times with either of those dot cards.
      I'm pretty sure a lot of people trying this dot card, especially people unfamiliar with W&N, would be turned off by it.

      @@JayNathanWatercolor I've bought W&N, Schmincke, Holbein, Daniel Smith, Mission Gold, Rosa Gallery, and White Nights. The last two especially had tonnes of paint on them. I had the same thought re W&N. They might sell more paint if they put more paint on their dot cards. I wasn't turned off enough to not buy their paints though. Most of mine are W&N. :) By the way, I have a few of their limited edition paints (mostly earth tones), and would be happy to send you some samples if you like.

    I love the subtlety of W&N earths which seem to dry as complex rather than flat colours, I like the range too… they seem very natural…

    I use the Gold Ochre, Indigo ( lightfast and looks closest to the real deal) and the Payne’s grey again are very great standbys from W&N normally the Perylene Maroon makes great shadows for bright warm reds but one can get by with using a darkened red any but it does make great branches too. I had a hang up with the Raw umber especially when I had tried it first and thought it was the only raw umber color. Well one can’t help it when changing so many diapers at the time. Quite over it now. I do like the darker slightly greenish tinged raw umber from other brands but it’s all subjective. The light red mixes well with yellow ochre and cobalt blue for skies by just letting it mingle on the paper.😊

    WN Caput Mortuum is an all time fave of mine. Try mixing it with phthalo turquoise for an amazing colour separating mixture :)

    Raw sienna is grand in skies. That touch of PR101 keeps it from going green in a graded wash. I just finished up a beach scene with it, and it was perfect. I also like their Raw Umber - I like cooler darker ones too, but this one is really good for sunwashed stone walls. Gold ochre makes good olive greens, and Their yellow ochre is my second fave after Daniels Smith’s. Too bad about the perylene maroon sample, it’s actually very strong and beautiful. I just painted a tiny skyscape yesterday with Davy’s Grey and Cobalt blue. Wow- that grey was developed for Davy for clouds, and it works so well and easy to get shadows. I was surprised, and plan on doing a bigger one.

      Ah yes I remember that the raw sienna is great in skies. It's a shame about the perylene maroon. I'll have to get hold of some and try it properly.

    Indigo, Payne's Gray, and Brown Madder (so sorry to hear that is changing), and Burnt Sienna are some of my very favourites. I use only this brand for those choices. The burnt sienna is a bright orangey colour which makes lovely grays mixed with ultramarine.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the Pr101 burnt sienna a lot. Yes it's a shame about the brown madder. We shall see if the new version is as nice.

    My favorite Potter's Pink is from Maimeri Blu. It's highly pigmented and looks similar to Schmincke's version. I buy it in tube form and it wets fine from a dried pan. I does need to be activated with some water a few minutes before using it. And needing a little bit of scrubbing seems to be common with this pigment.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes all the potter's pinks I've tried have taken a little while to get going. Maimeri isn't a brand I've tried properly. One for the future maybe.

    I do have the Light Red. Interesting that this is so well loved in the UK but not in the Americas. DaVinci is the only American company to make this color -- they call it Terra Cotta (Light Red). I can confirm both are very pigmented, much more than shown here. The W&N one dries nicely in the pan although after a time I wish I'd used glycerine just for rewettability. The one that intrigues me is Brown Ochre, maybe it's a bit like Goethite but it looks to be a nicer color.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor

      I have a pan of the Da Vinci terra cotta and really like it. Good to hear that the W&N light red is more pigmented than shown here. 😊

    Great swatchathon as usual. The trouble with dot-cards is there is insufficient paint and it's not as vibrant as paint straight from the tube. With all the great swatching you do, the manufacturers should be falling over themselves to send you 5ml tube samples at least 😀
    Not sure if all those yellows should be included within an Earth tones category, but who cares, they look fun to play with anyway.
    I recently bought the W&N Potter's Pink, a small 5ml tube. To be honest I am a bit disappointed with it. I'll have to save up and get the Schmincke version.
    Venetian Red is a glorious paint, I use it for brickwork, rooftops and mixing with other colours for warm shadows.
    Perylene Maroon is another beautiful paint, I bought this based on a previous swatchvid that you did when it was categorised under Purples!
    Burnt Umber looks nice, but would much prefer the Daniel Smith version personally.
    Vandyke's Brown is a beauty, great for painting tree bark and shadows in grassy landscapes.
    Ivory Black is one of my favourite Blacks, although now I'm leaning towards the Lunar Black of Daniel Smith (similar to the Mars Black here).
    The Light Red is a classic of the Ron Ronson palette, although he used to prefer the student grade Cotman series. I use both to be honest, they are great in sunset skies for example.
    What is W&N reason for the changes to pigments? Does anyone know?

    Thank you for swatching the whole Winsor & Newton line.You did a wonderful job of it as usual , but it is very hard to get a good sense of their amazing pigments without an adequate amount of paint. The Perylene Maroon is a strong and gorgeous color, but it's barely visible here. :( There are so many of their paints that I prefer over other brands. I'm sad their quality it's not so obvious here. Love your channel. 🤩

    Very nice colors (I love earthy colors), however, their raw umber is essentially a raw sienna (with their raw sienna looking more like an ochre), and not an umber. Raw umber is darker, and leans towards green instead of yellow. I found their burnt umber also lacking (looks like a burnt sienna) because it's possibly based off raw umber instead of a redder color. Their Vandyke is nice though.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes the raw Umber definitely resembles a raw Sienna. I like it a lot more than their actual raw Sienna 🤣

  • @aeli999

    I have a couple of Naples Yellow in different brands, but I don't really use it. I use DS Burgundy Yellow Ochre and DV Raw Sienna. I like DS Quin Gold which is PO48 PY150. I do have the Burnt Sienna which is much stronger from the tube. I'm sure that's a surprise. lol Interestingly, DV's Burnt Sienna is quite red compared to some others, despite being PBr7. I'm still unhappy about the PR206 news. One paint I have in nearly every palette is DS Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet. :( My Potter's Pink of choice is WN. Love it. The Perylene Maroon from the tube is again a lot stronger. I have 3 versions, DV, DS, and WN and they all paint very nicely, but I prefer the color of the DS. I have Schmincke's Burnt Umber which is quite a bit duller than WN's mix. It's comparable to Mission Gold's Van Dyke Brown in my swatch book. It's interesting that WN's Indigo and Payne's Gray are made with the same pigments. DS's Indigo and Payne's Blue Gray are both made from PB60 and PBk6. I like DS Lunar Black PBk11. I can't stand WN Davy's Gray. I don't know what it is, but that color just ugh. lol I'm sure you are relieved to be done fighting with the dot card. I got tickled at the Indigo. It's quite strong, just imagine it from the tube. lol Looking forward to the next!

  • @valasafantastic1055
    @valasafantastic1055 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They need to put more paint in the dot cards cheapskates. I think the raw umber is more raw sienna but nice. Red light is interesting and I think I’d enjoy the Naples yellow. They all seem nice but it’s unacceptable to be so stingy when people 1) pay actual money for the dot cards 2) this is their look to decide to invest lots more money in the paint so being stingy WILL cost them in the long run.
    Heck I’m less inclined after hearing more than once that only their dot cards are so stingy!
    Plus I’m in Canada and their paint is more expensive than Daniel Smith! Why would I bother unless I find them on a special sale!
    Still if they have a special colour I can’t get other wise I might pay extra but I get a bad feeling from them being so stingy on paid for dot cards….

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely doesn't do them any favours. I'm not sure I'd use W&N if this dot card was my only exposure to them.
