First time I played Super Mario Bros I died on that first goomba dozens of times. Mario slips and falls of platforms all the time. If he was a confident, competent hero I would say that is not how I remember the games. Brilliance is not his strength, tenacity is. When we play those games we fail and fail again, but we don't give up. In fact that's a big Ludo Narrative dissonance in may games with "cool" heroes, I love me some God of war 3, Kratos is a fucking monster, and in the cutscenes he can't be stopped. But when I control him I miss every fourth double jump and Kratos seemingly just slipped off a cliff to his death after bludgeoning several gods with his bare hands.

You cannot say Mario dies often because you controlling him died often. Every player plays differently. What, you will say Mario is also immortal God when you play perfectly? You cannot even say he is tenacious based on that, what if you give up and never finish the game? The truth its that in most games Mario does not work alone and that helps im accomplish his goals. Either its a special companion (like in most RPG games or the Hat in Mario Oddysey), his brother or other main member of the cast (Peach, Bowser). Mario almost never works alone. The only games where he truly works alone are Super Mario Bros 1, Lost Levels, 3 and 64 to some extend.

Seriously. The worst part is he said “Mario 64 and galaxy” like…there’s a star in Bob-omb battlefield that heavily implies that you need to use the wing cap power up. That’s not even mentioning through the jet stream and collect the caps from Jolly Roger bay and dire dire docks respectively. And for galaxy, did he just forget about the bee and spring mushrooms? I mean, the bee mushroom appears in the second level and it’s needed to get pretty much all the stars in that galaxy. Did he even think about what he said?
One of the things the developers spend the most thought on in every Mario game is the powerups. There are lengthy design documents for each one, and it’s one of the things players always got excited about. The raccoon tail, the cape, Yoshi, metal Mario. Not to mention the cap abilities in Mario Odyssey.

Tbf during the 80's and 90's, all depictions of Bowser outside of Japan completely ignored him being in love with Peach. I think the Mario RPG games were the first to show it blatantly in a video game. Heck in the main series before Mario Sunshine, out of context it felt like he was kidnapping Peach just because.
@@PipeGuy64Bit Its because Bowser never was in love with Peach, the original SMB game manual for the NES has stated that he kidnapped her because she had the power to undo his dark magic so that's why he kidnapped her so she wouldn't ruin his planed and it was up to Mario to save her so she could free the mushroom people from Bowers spell. Him becoming a simp was in the first Paper Mario game but then again Paper Mario is a separated universe from the mainline Mario, so Paper Bowser is not the same as regular Bowser.

You know what really makes all this kind of hilarious to me? Peach was a playable character in 1988, and her hover jump was extremely overpowered. So yeah, she's helpless in some of the games, but hypercompetent Peach has been an established part of the canon since longer than some of these doofuses have been alive.

The thing that has to hurt them the most, is that even when Bowser was just a ball of pixels, he was already a simp trying to marry the princess and kidnapping her, before even the label simp was born. In a lot of ways he was ahead of the simp era, perhaps a pillar of it, the simp king.
Thing is, Bowser has always had a thing for Peach way before Odyssey. It's the main reason why he always kidnaps her and it's hinted at, if not outright stated in most games and was even the main plot in the anime movie that came out way back in the 80's along with the comic that was featured in Nintendo Power for awhile (which also seems to be what this version of Peach is mostly based off on). Most people don't realize this since the characters are actually allowed to have "personalities" in the movie which mario games generally don't show off much, if at all, so Bowser going as hard as he did for Peach feels new to a lot of people despite the fact that this has always been one of his main goals.

I love that, when these guys want to make an example of strong female characters "done right" in movies, the two examples that are ALWAYS present are Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor from the Alien and Terminator franchises. But if they react this way for how Peach is portrayed, they would absolutely lose their shit over these two characters if the movies were released today. Especially Sarah Connor: she goes from an average girl that manages to defeat the Terminator through the help of Reese and her brains in the first movie, to an extremely badass and muscular warrior in the second one. Honestly I think the difference is that time and nostalgia has deemed those characters as socially acceptable objects of attraction while newer characters are more subject to the idea that anything less than extreme tradfemininity suddenly makes a woman unattractive. Prey, the last movie in the Predator franchise, got a lot of shit form these guys because the protagonist was a woman. Something I realized while watching this is that their entire opinion on media seems to be based on how woke it is. There is no separation from the actual quality. It's just, woke bad, anti-woke good. Tim Poo's friends start talking about what they think about the movie, and he immediately jumps to his opinion on how woke it is. This is interesting because while the left frequently analyzes media and criticizes conservative messages (I mean that's basically the point of this entire channel), it's not uncommon for us to disagree with the message of a movie, even find it problematic, but still enjoy it. Like, The Dark Knight and 24 were super Bush-era conservative. Violating human rights with torture and surveillance? It's fine if it's the good guy doing it to save us from terrorists! Kinda gross. But they're still really good. So you have funny situations like last year when conservatives thought the left was absolutely _seething_ about the success of Top Gun Maverick, but all the leftists were actually like, "Oh yeah it's definitely some blatant military propaganda, but it's still good as hell."

The idea that a female protagonist could achieve anything on her own, even in a made-up setting where any societal or biological disadvantages don't matter, is so unbelievable to them they call bs on it as soon as it's remotely implied, yet as soon as a male protagonist is anything less than a perfect paragon who looks good to the audience 24/7 and is in control of every situation (aka a Mary Sue), they see it as a personal attack on the whole freaking gender.

People that are concerned about this usually belong to the groups that are privileged, they can afford to worry about something that in the grand scheme of things, doesn't negatively affects them or anyone for that's matter. It's just like the old saying that privileged people thinking that equality is an oppression, and "wokeness" in entertainment media isn't even about that, but rather just one of the many ways writers and artists can take the creative direction (because honestly, corporations don't actually care about equality, and leftists aren't going to fall for it). The whole reason why Mulan goes to war is because she doesn't want her father to go off and possibly die, showing how much she loved him. While she did perform cool feets, she did most of them relying less on pure physical strength and more on strategies and physics, showing that women can be strong in different ways. While the male characters were used in comedic moments, they still were competent and came to trust Mulan because they all saw how hard she worked, showing that respect must be earned and not given, and even at the end, Mulan still needs the help of friends to save the day. These are all universal themes that everyone can understand and appreciate, so I highly doubt anyone except the spergiest of them all would have a problem with it even by today's standards.

So admittedly, I'm not an expert in Mario Lore. I watched my play Mario Sunshine, and I owned a Mario Teaches Typing game for the PC when I was a child. Even I know that Peach has had bad ass moments in games. She's been an active character in the games for a while now hasn't she?? Slight spoilers for the movie: Yes Peach is strong, but she also asks for and seeks HELP from others? She's never "I'm strong enough on my own!" Her strategy against Bowser is to ask for help from others. Hell when Toad says that he's going to protect her, she's genuinely grateful and accepts his help, she isn't all "Excuse me! I don't need a man to protect me!" So like... what are these people complaining about? That she... knows how to navigate a world that she's spent her entire life in..? That she.. isn't in a cage only to be seen at the end of the movie?

The whole first half of the movie is her getting the Kong army so she can take on Bowser, then they all get captured on Rainbow Road, so she has to resort to evacuating everyone and standing up to Bowser herself, when he pretty effortlessly forces her hand so she has to marry him. At the wedding, she temporarily incapacitates him before duking it out with some of his minions, but eventually loses her ice powers to King Bob-omb alongside the ice holding the prisoners up breaking. Donkey Kong and Mario then have to take out more of the grunts and save the prisoners. Then in Brooklyn, DK and Peach both get one cheap shot on Bowser before both being defeated by him off-screen.

Peach's stuff in here came from the Super Mario Adventures comics, Mario is literally on a hero's journey to become who we know him as, and Bowser was always based on Bluto and Peg-leg Pete, two ancient, mustache twirling villains whose evil originally came from the love of the girl and the hero getting in the way and giving him what for. The big enjoyment I got out of the movie was seeing it with my kid, who was brought up by me and his mom on Mario games. It was a triple threat of my own nostalgia, his nostalgia and my deep love for my son who's growing up too quickly.

First time I played Super Mario Bros I died on that first goomba dozens of times. Mario slips and falls of platforms all the time. If he was a confident, competent hero I would say that is not how I remember the games. Brilliance is not his strength, tenacity is. When we play those games we fail and fail again, but we don't give up.
In fact that's a big Ludo Narrative dissonance in may games with "cool" heroes, I love me some God of war 3, Kratos is a fucking monster, and in the cutscenes he can't be stopped. But when I control him I miss every fourth double jump and Kratos seemingly just slipped off a cliff to his death after bludgeoning several gods with his bare hands.

Narratively spekaing Mario often has no big problems in platfomers. They are not even concerned about the story. You cannot say Mario dies often because you controlling him died often. Every player plays differently. What, you will say Mario is also immortal God when you play perfectly? You cannot even say he is tenacious based on that, what if you give up and never finish the game?
The truth its that in most games Mario does not work alone and that helps im accomplish his goals. Either its a special companion (like in most RPG games or the Hat in Mario Oddysey), his brother or other main member of the cast (Peach, Bowser). Mario almost never works alone. The only games where he truly works alone are Super Mario Bros 1, Lost Levels, 3 and 64 to some extend.

There are lengthy design documents for each one, and it’s one of the things players always got excited about.
The raccoon tail, the cape, Yoshi, metal Mario.

The thing that has to hurt them the most, is that even when Bowser was just a ball of pixels, he was already a simp trying to marry the princess and kidnapping her, before even the label simp was born. In a lot of ways he was ahead of the simp era, perhaps a pillar of it, the simp king.
Thing is, Bowser has always had a thing for Peach way before Odyssey. It's the main reason why he always kidnaps her and it's hinted at, if not outright stated in most games and was even the main plot in the anime movie that came out way back in the 80's along with the comic that was featured in Nintendo Power for awhile (which also seems to be what this version of Peach is mostly based off on). Most people don't realize this since the characters are actually allowed to have "personalities" in the movie which mario games generally don't show off much, if at all, so Bowser going as hard as he did for Peach feels new to a lot of people despite the fact that this has always been one of his main goals.

I love that, when these guys want to make an example of strong female characters "done right" in movies, the two examples that are ALWAYS present are Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor from the Alien and Terminator franchises. But if they react this way for how Peach is portrayed, they would absolutely lose their shit over these two characters if the movies were released today. Especially Sarah Connor: she goes from an average girl that manages to defeat the Terminator through the help of Reese and her brains in the first movie, to an extremely badass and muscular warrior in the second one. Something I realized while watching this is that their entire opinion on media seems to be based on how woke it is. There is no separation from the actual quality. It's just, woke bad, anti-woke good. Tim Poo's friends start talking about what they think about the movie, and he immediately jumps to his opinion on how woke it is.
This is interesting because while the left frequently analyzes media and criticizes conservative messages (I mean that's basically the point of this entire channel), it's not uncommon for us to disagree with the message of a movie, even find it problematic, but still enjoy it.
Like, The Dark Knight and 24 were super Bush-era conservative. Violating human rights with torture and surveillance? It's fine if it's the good guy doing it to save us from terrorists! Kinda gross. But they're still really good.
So you have funny situations like last year when conservatives thought the left was absolutely _seething_ about the success of Top Gun Maverick, but all the leftists were actually like, "Oh yeah it's definitely some blatant military propaganda, but it's still good as hell."
No matter how I feel about the movie, the discourse around it makes me want to die.

The idea that a female protagonist could achieve anything on her own, even in a made-up setting where any societal or biological disadvantages don't matter, is so unbelievable to them they call bs on it as soon as it's remotely implied, yet as soon as a male protagonist is anything less than a perfect paragon who looks good to the audience 24/7 and is in control of every situation (aka a Mary Sue), they see it as a personal attack on the whole freaking gender.

It's one of 2 problems generally. 1) You are so privileged that wokeness in media is the only thing that affects you. 2) Your life sucks and you have no way of improving it, so you attack inconsequential things to make yourself feel better. It's hard to know who to be mad at when your life sucks. Is it your parents, ex partners, bad luck and circumstance, society, economic systems, etc? But, this Mario movie looks bad and I can get mad and blame people for trying to make me watch a bad movie. Or it's the fact that it's a kid's movie and you're 45 years old. Obviously, it looks like silly.
People that are concerned about this usually belong to the groups that are privileged, they can afford to worry about something that in the grand scheme of things, doesn't negatively affects them or anyone for that's matter. It's just like the old saying that privileged people thinking that equality is an oppression, and "wokeness" in entertainment media isn't even about that, but rather just one of the many ways writers and artists can take the creative direction (because honestly, corporations don't actually care about equality, and leftists aren't going to fall for it). The whole reason why Mulan goes to war is because she doesn't want her father to go off and possibly die, showing how much she loved him. While she did perform cool feets, she did most of them relying less on pure physical strength and more on strategies and physics, showing that women can be strong in different ways. While the male characters were used in comedic moments, they still were competent and came to trust Mulan because they all saw how hard she worked, showing that respect must be earned and not given, and even at the end, Mulan still needs the help of friends to save the day.
These are all universal themes that everyone can understand and appreciate, so I highly doubt anyone except the spergiest of them all would have a problem with it even by today's standards.

Slight spoilers for the movie: Yes Peach is strong, but she also asks for and seeks HELP from others? She's never "I'm strong enough on my own!" Her strategy against Bowser is to ask for help from others. Hell when Toad says that he's going to protect her, she's genuinely grateful and accepts his help, she isn't all "Excuse me! I don't need a man to protect me!" So like... what are these people complaining about? That she... knows how to navigate a world that she's spent her entire life in..? That she.. isn't in a cage only to be seen at the end of the movie?
Peach does seek help but still shes never shown to need any help considering she was perfect the entire film

The whole first half of the movie is her getting the Kong army so she can take on Bowser, then they all get captured on Rainbow Road, so she has to resort to evacuating everyone and standing up to Bowser herself, when he pretty effortlessly forces her hand so she has to marry him. At the wedding, she temporarily incapacitates him before duking it out with some of his minions, but eventually loses her ice powers to King Bob-omb alongside the ice holding the prisoners up breaking. Donkey Kong and Mario then have to take out more of the grunts and save the prisoners. Then in Brooklyn, DK and Peach both get one cheap shot on Bowser before both being defeated by him off-screen.

Peach's stuff in here came from the Super Mario Adventures comics, Mario is literally on a hero's journey to become who we know him as, and Bowser was always based on Bluto and Peg-leg Pete, two ancient, mustache twirling villains whose evil originally came from the love of the girl and the hero getting in the way and giving him what for.

The big enjoyment I got out of the movie was seeing it with my kid, who was brought up by me and his mom on Mario games. It was a triple threat of my own nostalgia, his nostalgia and my deep love for my son who's growing up too quickly.
Not only is Peach's mario kart racing suit established canon, but it's also my favourite peach outfit.

I used to watch shad because I'm history nerd. But I can't say I'm surprised he has these weird things about marioigichoader movie, most history nerds are either "culture is subjective (probably smokes weed)", "omg I love guns so much (specifically german guns)", "I am catholic but I love everyone (doesn't love everyone)" or "I am literally a knight (Lives in California)" And out of these the only reasonable one is the one who propably smokes weed, and there's still a chance he watches joe rogan so yeah, not very surprised.

That's what I got out of it too. I don't really know why they appointed her, but they did. It seems a bit strange to appoint an orphan you found in the wilderness as your ruler, but I guess it does seem kind of mystical now that I say it out loud.
