Lord Patten - BNO visa scheme amendment - 10 Feb Full Speech in the House of Lords

- During the debate on the BNO visa amendment in the House of Lords last Thursday, Lord Patten of Barnes, a patron of Hong Kong Watch, spoke on the amendment and called on the British Government to accept the amendment to allow young Hongkongers born in 1997 or later with one parent holding BNO status to apply for the visa scheme.
Lord Patten said "Everyone of my successors as Chief Executive of Hong Kong had a British passport ... and the ones who are being locked up don't". He continued: "What we've seen in Xinjiang is wicked, what we've seen in Tibet is wicked, what is happening in Hong Kong - the destruction of a free city, one of the great free cities in the world - I think that's wrong and we should say it's wrong".
The House got a positive response from the UK Government during the debate, where the Government Whip, Lord Andrew Sharpe of Epsom, said the Government was aware of the concerns and was very sympathetic to the situation of young people born in 1997 or later whose parents have BNO status. He said the UK government was seriously looking at whether more could be done to help this group of young people and hoped to update the House of Lords at report stage.

Wake up. Allan Tam is holding a British passport. Many Chinese Politicians are holders of American passports.
UK needs more Chinese which is hard working in nature. Otherwise UK is filled with Indian. UK needs some balance of foreigner
Being British is not as free as he says, says the British people.

Freedom is a relative term, isn't it? However, for those Hong Kongers who are literally locked up, or feel "locked-up" in the City, we should be sympathetic and supportive. People from outside cannot imagine how suffocating and hopeless Hong Kongers feel.
