i dont get how anyone could have done that in a honda fit...unless the back seats removed and its flat.
i have a matrix hb and ive camped in it with the seats folded flat but im sure you cant put a wooden bed in it.

One tip: I am new to the road and discovered this. DO NOT use plastic totes as suggested. Always use canvas type bags. You can find them cheap at the dollar store. Plastic totes take up way too much space, whereas, you can push a loaded soft canvass bag into the nooks and crannies of your vehicle. Also, buy different colored bags. Then, list, in your phone, exactly what your inventory is per bag color. That way, you won't be physically rummaging. You want your flashlight? Simply check your phone to find out which color tote it's in. It's that simple.

You smart. I like that. The only thing I’d keep a plastic bin for is food. But you’re right about anything else.

Hi I'm 52 and dreamt of travelling... 'Van life'... So to speak. So sadly my partner/husband died enexpectedly leaving me and our 3 children here together. It seemed ten million miles out of reach then. The lack of enthusiasm to build a whole van set up on my own and monetary hurdle just got made into a massive barrier in my mind. Then came 'Ralph'. My beautiful 🖤 black Ford Mondeo Estate Car. I've made the best rig I can inside him now. Not even 1 bit of carpentry needed. I'm so happy with it. Now the adventure can finally begin. Although I will be without my husband this adventure has breathed fresh spirit into me. I loved your vid. Admire your conviction and agree with the ideal it's about the getting out there not the label of 'worlds best camper van'. It's all about the experiences. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I'm a subscriber now and hope to collect more valuable wisdom from you. :-)
    Happy experiences

In the trunk area I'm building a box so that I can have my cooler and a camp kitchen roll out on a drawer then I'm probably going to do the same setup as you guys with your bed

i like the RAV4, i almost bought one and would have done the same thing. Instead i did it with a chevy cruze. I have one video of it on my channel if you care. Things that i think helped out my trip: 1. A compact Hammock. Having a clean, relaxing space that i could control and be out of my car was very useful. 2. having a longboard. I would see some towns and cities too, being able to put my car in a safe spot and explore without worrying about moving it or finding parking was nice. 3. having a bed set up that required almost no set up was nice.

    • @johanssonfilms
      @johanssonfilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Ryan I could not agree more with all of your points. The two things I found I missed during the trip was having a hammock for the chill days and a longboard for when we found cool roads! Also having a setup that doesn't require too much work is awesome as well, it's just a matter of whether it's feasible depending on the car. Thanks for the comment!

Totes are OK but I would use LARGE clear plastic bags that have zippered top. Each plastic bag contains one category of items. They conform to the space they are sitting, and allow you to see what is inside without opening it up & digging through it. I organized a cluttered closet with this idea using LARGE ziplock bags. It really works better than totes. New bed comforters are packaged in large clear bags that are nice also.

I like the shower curtain and the Velcro ideas. Can you tell the inside dimensions of your vehicle? Rather than the large bins, going to use some plastic 3 compartment drawers I already have (24" tall, 12"wide12" deep) for some of the hard items like tools and plates, little stove, etc. Don't know the year or size of your rav 4 but my SUV is 70":wide on the outside but at least a foot longer than some of the rav 4s I've seen. I believe I can use black foam board from the Dollar Tree and glue Reflectix on the other side. Looking forward to a super ch3eap build, want to save my money for a little heater to install (diesel probably) and to get my AC fixed. Really like your presentation, happy travels!

You are such a sweet and funny kid with lots of good ideas told in a wonderful way. I've liked and subscribed. Best of luck to you both. Do tell us good spots to boondock. Were you only in Ontario or did you come West at all?
Yes, if Americans are watching this, be forewarned. Our mosquito and fly situation is awful. All through Canada.
Even on the ski slopes in July and August.

I think my vw beetle is the exception to the "this can be done in any car" statement, but I'm looking forward to doing this when I eventually get a bigger car!

@@CaseyReads Aww. But I've just been watching youtubes of mororcycles pulling these very cute and sometimes roomy little tent trailers. Smart cars can pull them, so you could too.

Thanks for the kind words Hank! And welcome to the channel! The RAV4 is a 2011 with AWD. Our next trip is the beginning of 2019. It's going to be quite the adventure too!

I'm very intrigued by the sleeping platform, especially that you said you saw a FIT with a similar set up. I'm driving across Canada over the course of 6 months in a hyundai accent!!!! And I'm very concerned about sleeping, especially that I'm traveling alone. Do you have any suggestions???

Ha ha. 😁 Yes a cold kitchen is so far from the great outdoors and adventure time. But it is a perfect contrast. This is real life 9-5 everyone's obligation state. Vs. Freedom. I like it for that reason. This guy is great. I've subscribed. He is a wonderful story teller.

Hey I noticed in this video at 1:37 that you no longer have that 6" wood support piece for the fold out part of the bed which you showed in your "How to build a bed in your car" video. Any reason for removing this? Did it not work as you thought and just became superfluous?
Thanks! Great video by the way.

Dang that's some good observation skills! It actually fell off at one point in the trip and we realized that we didn't really need it as the hinges could take the weight, so we just tossed it in a dumpster somewhere along the way 😂
